At the beginning of a
new year many enlightened
people take the opportunity
to assess their lives and
determine if some changes
need to be made for a more
productive year. New Year’s
resolutions flow from this
evaluative process. Oneofthe
key elements of eachperson’s
life is one’s “significant other”
relationship.
Recently I came across an
interesting book on romantic
relationships entitled: “If
Love is a Game, These are
the Rules” by Cherie Carter-
Scott. In addition to the
“rules,” there is a relationship
“check-up” section in the book
which follows. I encourage
you and your partner to
participate. (You may want
to give a grade from 0-100
to each one)
l.Overallfeelings aboutthe
relationship:
Are you getting your needs
met? Are you speaking up
and asking for what you
want?
Are you feeling heard? Are
you feeling encouraged and
supported to grow?
2. The decision-making

process:
Are decisions made to your
satisfaction? Is there suffi
cient time to discuss, assess
and process? Doyou feel your
thoughts and feelings are
taken seriously?
3. Communication:
Do you feel safe to say
whateveryoufeel? Doyoufeel
listened to when you commu
nicate? Do you feel listened
to when you communicate?
Do you feel encouraged to
tell your truth? Do you feel
supported in all your dreams
and goals?
4. Roles and
responsibilities:
Do you feel the division of
tasks is working? Doyoufeel
both ofus are doing our parts?
Do you feel the task allocation
is fair? Is there anything you
want to change?
5. Activities:
Do you feel we spend
enough time together? Do
you need more alone time?
Doyou wantto try something
new?
6. Planning, schedules and
logistics:
Are you experiencing any
schedule conflicts? Are our
financial agreements fair?
Do you have enough time to
accomplish everything you
want?
Well, how does your rela
tionship look as viewed
through your eyes? Your
partner’s? Is there much
difference of opinion? Next
week I will share with you
the “rules” so that you may
know the ultimate secrets to
a wonderful, enduring and
loving relationship!
