Fifth-graders participate
in annual scavenger hunt
Putnam County fifth-
grade students recently par
ticipated in the Fifth Grade
History Scavenger Hunt,
an annual event at the Old
School History Museum.
Armed with clipboards
and 22 questions, these
young sleuths circled the
history gallery, searching for
information about their city
and county. Museum docents
stood by, ready to guide
them to the appropriate wall
panel, but not to provide the
answers. Students worked in
pairs and earned a grade for
their one-hour hunt.
Students could be heard
excitedly whispering
to their partners, “Look,
here’s Georgia’s Civil War
Governor” and “I found
Eatonton’s first known cit
izen!” Too soon, each hour
ended and another class
arrived to begin their hunt.
The scavenger hunt is always
scheduled over two school
days, until all fifth-graders
have had their chance to
“hunt history.”
This popular event began
four years ago when Cammie
Branan, PCES fifth-grade
history teacher, and Sandra
Rosseter, museum direc
tor, partnered to bring the
fifth-graders to the museum
for a Civil War in Georgia
tour. Because the tour was a
huge success, Branan created
the scavenger hunt as a fifth-
grade history lesson.
This year, the Old School
History Museum team was
pleased to welcome the
classes of three PCES teach
ers, Branan, Mike Johnston
and Jessica Castillo.
“I absolutely love this
event,” Branan said. “We
are community and schools
working together. We are
the village that is helping to
shape the lives ofthe students
in our community.”
