Postseason Racing News, Stats & Trivia
This Week’s Racing News
NASCAR is still waiting on Monster’s sponsorship decision.
Six months ago executives from NASCAR and Monster spoke
positively about their new and developing relationship that
saw the energy drink maker take over entitlement sponsorship
duties from Sprint. Both sides were optimistic Monster would
exercise a two-year option and remain in the role through 2020, with a decision
needed by December. In the months since, Monster has not only asked for
an extension of the December deadline, until just after the first of the year,
but also asked for a second extension until the spring. NASCAR granted both
requests, though has quietly begun identifying new and potential replacements
in case Monster doesn’t renew. If Monster were to opt out, it places NASCAR
in a precarious position for the second time in three years where the search for
an entitlement sponsor becomes a pervasive cloud hanging over the season.
Racing History
Dec. 21.1971 - Clyde Minter, who finished in the
top five in each of his first four Cup starts, died on
this day at age 50. Minter was 27 in 1949 when he
started the sixth and eighth races in NASCAR’s
first Strictly Stock season and finished fourth at
both Martinsville and North Wilkesboro. He made
eight starts in 1950, finishing third at Charlotte and
fifth at Martinsville. Minter started his 42nd and
final Cup race in 1955.

Morgan County sophomore guard Arkesia Williams
moves around a Buford defender and attempts a
3-pointer during last Tuesday's contest.
Dogs play without veterans
Aris Hubbard and Santaji
“Lou” Reid (more on them
in a moment).
Because of the fact Buford
was so heavily favored, the
Lady Dogs tinkered with
some new ideas, including
the use of a 1-3-1 defense.
“We threw a new defense
in [Tuesday], just to see how
it looked,” Reeves said. “We
saw some of the problems we
had running it, and so we can
comebackin practice andget
those better. There are bene
fits to coming over here and
getting beat up sometimes.
You can’t address flaws ifyou
can’t find them, and we saw
them [Tuesday].”
Hubbard injured her
ankle during practice Nov.
30, just one day before
Morgan’s showdown with
Cedar Shoals. The senior
forwardhas notplayed since.
Hubbard sported a walking
boot earlier this month but,
last Tuesday, she attended
the Buford game and walked
without any brace.
Reid injured her shoulder
during one of the Lady Dogs’
games in late November. She
powered through the injury
during the Lady Dogs’ over
time loss to Cedar Shoals.
Reid crashed onto her shoul
der at one point during the
game and was visibly in pain.
Since that matchup with
Cedar Shoals, Reid has been
ontheMorganbench. Reeves
said Reid has not played
mostly because she needed
to rest and not risk re-ag-
gravating the shoulder issue.
Both Hubbard and Reid
are expected back soon.
Reeves said he was hoping
for“aChristmasmiracle”that
would allowthe two to return
this week during the Sweet
South Classic tournament.
“We’re looking to get
healthy,’”he said. “The beauty
about that is, in the absence
of ball handlers like Lou and
rebounders like Aris, we have
girls that are getting experi
ence and getting better, and
that’ll help us goingforward.”
Despite the team’s tough
stretch of losses, the players’
upbeat attitudes have not
wavered.
During the second half of
last week’s game in Buford,
senior forward Jamie Puckett
attempted a 3-pointer. It
clanked off the rim and,
almost immediately, she, her
teammates and her coaches
alllaughedtogetheraboutthe
missed shot.
Reeves said Puckett often
knocks down jump shots
during practice, so, after it
was clear Buford would win
by a large margin, he told her
to give it a try in-game.
The light-hearted moment
showed Reeves his players
are not defeated. He said he
thinks that is a good thing
considering how challenging
the last month has been for
the team.
“That loose attitude is good
to an extent,” Reeves said.
“Once we need to tighten up,
we’ve got to know it’s time to
tighten up. As long as we don’t
lookloose in the close games,
I guess we’ll be all right.”
Fortunately for the Lady
Dogs, the most import
ant part of their schedule
remains: region play.
They have not yet played
a Region 8-AAA game and
won’t until Jan. 2 when they
host Franklin County. Reeves
said he is not too worried
about his team’s performance
thus far because the players
still have a chance to put
together a strong finish in
the region.
“As much as you want to
say this part of the season
matters, it’s all about getting
better for the stretch run,”
Reeves said. ‘We haven’t seen
aregiongameyetandoncewe
start seeing regions games is
when it really starts kicking
into high gear.”
But before the Lady Dogs
open region play, they will
compete in the Sweet South
Classic, the annual Christmas
tournament held at Morgan,
beginningthis Thursday. The
Lady Dogs - and Morgan’s
boys team - always compete
in the tournament.
First up for the Morgan
girls is Butler. Reeves said
he hopes his players can snap
their losingstreakandmakea
good run in the tournament.
“Ideally, you want to be in
the championship game of
any tournament you play in,”
he said. ‘We’ve got to come out
and play a solid first day - we
can’tlet that game escapeus -
and then go from there. Butler
of Augusta is our next target
so we can’t look forward to
those other games. We’ve got
to make sure and get a win
there first.”

last week. The Tigers
dropped game one of the

to Winder-Barrow, 62-54.
They beat Prince Avenue

Unfortunately for the
Tigers, their winning streak
ended at one Saturday. They
lost at Aquinas, 60-29, in
one of their worst offensive
performances in recent
memory.
