Continued from Cl
more success for Rafe, this time in
the Pro division.
- Morgan basketball plays in
state
OK, I know the Bulldogs lost this
game. Regardless, it’s quite a feat to
make it to four-straight state cham
pionship games.
That’s exactly what Morgan’s boys
basketball team did. The Bulldogs
had a shot to win their second
consecutive state championship.
Although they came up short, losing
to Pace, 54-46, their run in the post
season was still something to behold.
Morgan’s girls were tough as
nails last year, too, advancing into
the Final Four round of the state
tournament.
Both teams were a lot of fun to
cover. So far this year, the boys
look even stronger than they did
last season. Good luck, Class AAA.
You’re gonna need it with this team
in the mix.
- LOA honors first senior
athletes
The Lake Oconee Academy
softball team did not have a pretty
season. Any Lady Titan and their
head coach, Julie Brooker, would
tell you that themselves.
However, it’s clear the LadyTitans
are laying the foundation for the
future. That was apparent when I
spoke to the team’s seniors following
their final softball game.
LOA’s senior softball players were
the first-ever senior athletes to be
honored at LOA, as this is the school’s
first year with a senior class. It was
cool being there in person to watch
another “first” get checked off the
list for LOA.
That school’s athletic programs
will one day be among the elite in
our area. I’m privileged to be here
covering them now in their infancy.
- Kelley returns from injury
C’Darius Kelley, quarterback of
the Greene County football team,
suffered a devastating knee injury
during the 2016 season opener at
Morgan County. It cost him his
sophomore season.
This past season, Kelley played
every game and earned all-region
honors for his efforts. Greene’s
season left a lot to be desired
and ended with its coach getting
removed, but there was no shortage
of inspiration to draw from regard
ing Kelley’s story.
By all accounts, Kelley is a bright
student at GCHS who is destined for
a big future. This year, he showed
that his future could involve the
game of football.
In a year full of disappointing
results throughout Lake Country
- and even on Kelley’s own team - his
hard-fought return to football was a
special moment.
- Lake Country athletes go to
college
I won’t list them all because I’m
bound to forget someone, but Lake
Country sent a lot ofstudent-athletes
to collegiate programs this year.
Last year’s senior class, including
Morgan’s Ansley Dean, Sarah Couch
and Tatyana Davis and Greene’s
Devin Wynn, Anthony Grimes
and Essence Randolph, churned
out some great talent and various
colleges took notice.
So far this school year, Morgan
softball player Sadie Worth has
signed on to play at Emmanuel
College. She will most certainly be
joined by many others as the school
year progresses.
It’s always nice seeing local kids
understand the value of a good edu
cation, andit’s extra special watching
them reap the benefit of dedicating
their lives to their respective sports.
May 2018 bring us more great
moments throughout Lake
Country!
