Buying, maintaining marine batteries during winter
The initial Berry’s
Tournament Trail tourna
ment for the 2018 season
visited Lake Oconee and
Sugar Creek Marina on Dec.
9, and the weather was any-
thingbut nice. The day began
with cold rain and some sleet
makingfor miserable fishing
conditions. However, thebad
weather did not impact fish
ing results as it took over 19
pounds of largemouth bass
to win first place.
Even with the bad weather
just prior to and during the
early hours of the tourna
ment, 70 two-man teams
launched their boats with the
intent of finding five large-
mouth bass they could bring
back to the weigh scales.
When the tournament
ended several hours later,
30 teams were able to bring
a five-fish limit to the weigh
scales. Overall, the 140
anglers caught 234 large-
mouth weighing just over
Bobby
Peoples
Outdoor Columnist
550 pounds. That represents
an average weight of 2.3
pounds per fish, which is an
excellent average weight.
The cold front with snow,
sleet, rain and cold tempera
tures that invaded the area
could have had a drastic
impact on the tournament
results, but it turned out to
be an excellent tournament.
Fishing had already been
tough for most anglers prior
to the tournament; but, as
always, anglers will figure
out the right lure and right
location and catch fish.
The Berry’s Tournament
Trail is a team competi
tion for the team catching
largest bag, or five-fish
limit, of largemouth bass
during the one-day tourna
ment. A monetary prize is
also awarded to the angler
catching the biggest large
mouth bass on the day of
competition.
The final results included
an unbelievable tie for first
place. The fact that two
teams would catch the exact
weight on a bad weather day
like the anglers encountered
was astounding. The two
teams finishing with the
exact weight ofl9.25 pounds
were the team of Sean Dunn
from Hampton and Jeremy
Beatenbaugh from Forest
Park, and the team of Stacy
Adams from Hazelhurst
and Josh Wimberly from
Hinesville.
Dunn and Beatenbaugh
caught their fish on spin-
nerbaits and jerk baits
while Adams and Wimberly
caught their fish on crank-
baits. Those two teams
split the combined first and
second place prize money
with each team receiving
$1,890.
Finishing in third place
was the team of Clabion
Johns from Covington and
David Ruarkfrom Jefferson.
They caught 15.78 pounds
and took home $780. The
big bass of the day, weighing
6.87, was caught by Jeremy
Beatenbaugh. That big bass
was caughton ajerkbaitand
paid $700.
The Berry’s Tournament
Trail continues to be one
of the best, if not the best,
tournament trail in Georgia
year after year. The Berry
family has done an excellent
job over the last few years
in presenting a very profes
sional fishing tournament
that anglers eagerly look
forward to competing in
each year.
The tournament trail is
comprised of eight one-day
tournaments divided equally
between Lake Sinclair and
Lake Oconee, and those
eight tournaments are then
followedbyatwo-day classic
with one day of competition
on each lake.
The remaining schedule
will see tournaments occur
ring at Lake Sinclair on Jan.
6, Feb. 3, Mar. 17andApr. 21.
The tournaments remaining
for Lake Oconee are on Mar.
3, Apr. 7 and May 5. A two-
day classic will be held on
May 19-20. All Lake Sinclair
tournaments are held at the
Dennis Station DNR access
and the Lake Oconee tour
naments are held at Sugar
Creek Marina.
The cost per tournament
is $160 per boat, and each
two-man team must com
pete in at least five of the
eight regular tournaments
to fish the two-day classic,
which has a potential payout
of $10,000. In addition, an
Angler of the Year award is
given to the two-man team
that has the highest total
cumulative weight during
the entire season. Thatteam
must be composed of the
same two anglers and they
must compete in at least five
of the eight tournaments to
qualify.
If you enjoy tournament
competition, this is the
tournament trail you need
to consider fishing. To enter,
visit www.berrysbass.com
or call Bobby Berry at
770-787-6179.
Good fishing and see you
next week.
