THE COMMUNITY ENTERPRISE 5? L VOLUME 13, NO. 32 COLUMBUS, CAIRO, THOMASTON, GRIFFIN, VALDOSTA, VIDALIA, ALBANY, AUGUSTA AND MACON, GA. FEBRUARY, 1965 Sermon Dr. William P. Carter No Night There And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light. Rev. 22:5. It is impossible for us to con ceive an exact idea of what hea ven will be like. It is of God’s de signs, that we shall not know on earth what he has “prepared for them that love himi” I Cor. 2.-9.) In this respect God acts as a father to us as a parent will not i allow a child to see a birthday or a Christmas nresent until the day j for its presentation arrives, so God, who “has prepared for them that love him such good things as pass man’s understanding,” will not let them see those things until -the day of Resurrection. Yet he tells us' something about Heaven. He tells us of many things which will not be there. There will be no more sea, more course, no more night. We will ex amine the significance on the fact that “there shall be no night there”. It implies: I. No more sleep. Some object, and say there is no cause for sat isfaction in this. The busy man he would say enjoy sleep. It is re freshment after the labor of the day. Heaven would be none the better for having no time of rest. We answer in heaven there will be nothing to make sleep either enjoyable of necessary. There will be no more fatigue. Yet, without sleep, in heaven “the weary is at rest. II. No more sleeplessness. Few things in life are so unpleasant as lying awake at night. It is one of the things that make night hid eous. In heaven there will be no more sleeplessness because there will be none of the ills which it, e. g. I. No sickness or sorrow. 2. No anxiety. 3. No anticipation of evil. TTT No more fear. Timid peo ple are frightened most easily at night. Men and women have been found dead after a night confine ment in a dark and lonely place. The darkness of night has this ef fect in varying degree according to the nervous temperament on al most all people. Even good people are notably so. The conscience is an unpleasant companion in the dark. The poet Young says, in “Night Thoughts” - By night an atheist believes a God”. In heaven there will be no fear. IV. No more Sins. There is more sin of every kind committed at night than at any other time. Men love darkness rather than lights, because their deeds are evil. (St. John 3:19). St. Paul says “They that be drunken are drunken in the night.” (IT). Into the land of eternal day Continued on Page 2 Rev. E. F. Ridley Emancipation Day Speaker By Rev. E. F. Ridley Tlie Emancipation Day Speaker Jan. 1st, 2 p.m. in St. Paul Pres byterian Church, at Cordele, Ga. was Rev. E. F. Ridley, Pastor of Allen Temple A. M. E. Church, Cordele. Mr. Tutt, Principal of C. A. Clark High School of the city was the refined and high class Master of Ceremonies. The school chorus furnished most of the music. Among other things, Rev. Rid ley said we came came here to celebrate the 102nd Anniversary of our Emancipation, to look back, to take stock and to look forward. Slavery, in our dark past, stait- ed in 1619 in Virginia as a result of the African tribes in the “Gold Coast” known now as Ghana, on Africa’s west coast, sold the ene my prisoners they captured in tri bal wars to seamen in ships at anchor on their shores. Arabs cap tured any and all Africans they could, and sold them, to the extent that the African even today hates the Arabs. Abolishionist said slavery was wrong. Pres. Lincoln freed the Negro as a war measure. We were turned free poor, emp ty, ignorant, illiterate, no homes, no churches, nothing ! We had many handicaps, slave personalities. Segregated, second i class citizens. We have come a long way, by God’s help. He alone was our ref uge. We should never forget it. Let us take stock. What is the score? People from every conti nent, many countries and cultural backgrounds came to the U.S.A. Each had his problems and diffi culties being dissiminated in the American way. We had ours. Con flicts and problems inescapable. Continued on Page 4 Steward Chapel A. M. E,. Church Rev. D. C.
