THE RED AND BLACK.

Work is the Thing.
(Lionel Hoi) Ingcrsoll Mid to a
young man the other day: “Any
man can be a fair lawyer, if lie has
an ordinary amount of brains, and is
willing to work.”
Thin remark applies to almoxt,
every profession and induxtry. Ap
plication - -contracted energy per
aixtent work will make a ru.-iti suc
cessful ami cause him to be regarded
ax a genius.
Dickens summed up the whole
business in one word, “attention.” J
Me used to tell young men that tin-
secret of good writing was atten
tion. “fiive the matter your alteu
lion,” he said, “and you will suc
ceed."
This is what Ingcrsoll means j
when lie speaks of tile results of
work. There is no very great dif
ference in the natural m> utal ca
pacity ofthemaxKof mankind. The
average man who has success al
ways in view, and works untiringly
for it, will get there, unless extraor
dinary obstacles or misfortunes
stand in his way.
The most successful financiers,
merchants, artisans, farmers and
professional men started at the bot
tom of the ladder and worked their
way up.
It is true in the highest sense that
worth makes the man, but it is equal
ly true, in a strictly business sense,
that work makes the man.
Work is the thing, ami, when you

THE LADIES WILL GO-
Tn*y Always Uo to Sss Clara Morris
Everywhere.
The audiences that generally greet
Clara Morris throughout the country j
are very largely composed of women. I
She of all the actresses seems the only
one who oan touoh every oherd of feel
ing known to her sex. Certain it is
that her greatest ad mi ers are women
and she is more than grateful that it is
so. This being the osae, Miss Morris
has recently translated and adapted s
play from the Carman, entitled Claire,
and upon its ttrst production and al
most constantly thereafter, the critic*
chose to term it a woman's play. It i*
a strong, forcible and powerful argu
ment agstnst the abuse ef the already
too narrow ei oial laws that condemn in
women what is condoned in men. It
affords Miss Morris end her superb
company many opportunities for good
acting and they never fail to embrace
them. On Wrdneeday nlgl t for the
first time here MUe Morris will appear
at the opera houte in Claire, end should
be the occasion of an overflowing house
>• it doubtless will be.

On a Cash Account.
My cash is all gone and iny pocket is
empty.
My next month's allowance is not yet at
hand;
What excuse can I give when I state my
requirements,
Wliat excuse for my extra demand?
Shall I state it is caused by a foot-ball
assessment,
Or exceedingly large fraternity dues?
I’m sure I don't know where my money
lias gone to,
I tried to keep track but my book got
confused.
I might say I went to a theatre party,
(The truth by the way I freely confess)
| But I think that the safest reason ex
tant is,
“The Y. M. C. A. dues have reached an
excess.”
A GREAT EVENT-
Clt rn Morris at Opera House on Jan
uary 24th.
In all the plays that Clara Morris
presents there are strong dramatic
scenes, scenes of conscience and great
mental suffering and m all these Clara
Morris ban to rival on the stage. Her
sciing is still far beyond that of any
other woman attempting them.
On Wednesday evening next Miss
Morris will appear at the opera house
in the lutes 1 ; addition to her repertoire,
Claire, being an original adaptation
from the German This play, on ac
count of its dire, t appeal to members of
her own sex has been termed a “wom
an’s play,” and it is fitting that it
should be presented by a woman who
has no < qual in the portrayal of their
wrongs. Claire is a powerful play, well
suited to Miss Morris’ pronounced abil
ity. The company eupporting her is a
particular strong one including only
well known members of the theatrical
profession. Her appearance in our city
