Page Two THE RED AND BLACK Hickman Proved Guilty at Trial Of Demosthenian Edward Hickman, the California child kldnapper-Hlayer, furnished Demosthenian Literary society with material for a trial at the meeting of the society Wednesday night. The supplied defendant was found guilty and given the death sentence hy a Jury of twelve men. The defendant, parents of the slain child, prosecution and defense councils, Judge and Jury were re cruited from among members of the society for the trial. The out come of the case hinged upon the question of the sanity of the de fendant. The defense, It. B. Jen nings. It. W. Smith, and Louis Alliums, sought to prove him insane; the prosecution, J. I). Aderhold, L II. Block, and I. Market, succeeded in showiing that he was normal, to the satisfaction of the Jury. The uctlons of the defendant un doubtedly proved that he was crazy, In the opinion of several witnesses of the trial. But the Jury brought in a verdict of guilty. Ike Hay served as Judge, and Hoke Wofford (Hied the role of the grlef- strlcken father of the girl. The prosecution called the attention of the Jury to the tears that flowed from the eyes of the sorrowful father, although at the time Mr. Wofford’s habitual sunny features were devoid of -tears or expression of grief. At the next meeting l’ryor Fitts Is scheduled to give an oration and Charles Hope a declamation. Georgia Runners Intend to Enter Tech Steeplechase Robt. Young, Macon, and Sum Tal- madge, Athens, have signified their Intention of entering the Georgia Tech Steeplechase, to be held Feb ruary 11. Young has won several first places In Intercollegiate cross country runs, and both men huve Two University of Georgia runners, won the Intramural race at the Uni versity. The steeplechase race consists of a run of approximately three miles, including hurdles, banks, and water hazards. Frosh to Hold Boxing Tourney A boxing tournament among mem bers of the freshman class will oc cur some time in February, accord ing to Lieutenant Smith, Winners in each division will be given numerals. They will compose the freshman boxing team which meets Fort Henning. Law Fraternity Initiates Soon XI chapter of Sigma Delta Kappa law fraternity held their formal pledging ceremony at the Holman hotel this morning for the follow ing law students: G. W. Fetzer, .1. K. Hughes. W S. Stuckey, Paul Pas- chal, A. J. McDonald, and Hall. Due to the large number of public Initiations being held this week-end, | it has been decided to defer the pub lic Initiation of the fraternity until next week-end. The present members of the local chapter are: I. K. Hay, Bob Falli- gant, Jimmie Burns, Gavin McKay. I Maurice Thomas, Coy Johnstone, Joe Webb, Lamar Smith, Johnnie Broad nax, It. B. Jennings, Hartrldge Shearouse. R. B. Smith, and J. R. Roberts. Judge Blanton Fortson and Judge Wheeler are honorary members. "Marry him? No college man can marry me!"
