Holds Meeting
The freshman Y. M. C. A. club
held Its weekly meeting Tuesday
night, the attendance being small on
account of other activities.
The main feature of the program
was an address by Hugh Gordon,
vice-president of the Citizens and
Southern National Bank, Athens, and
prominent alumnus of the Univer
sity. His message was warmly re
ceived.
The following officers have been
elected: President, S. J. Morcock,
Savannah; vice-president, ('. C.
Smith. Thomson; secretary, .1. I*.
Strange. Eat out on; treasurer, R.
A. Hlers, Pavo. Felton Drew Mat
thews, Athens, .lohn Anderson, Rock-
mart, Grady Turner, Tate, and Joe
Ray, Athens, have been chosen as
members of the cabinet.
Misses Julia Conk and Kulalie
Vaughn rendered speclui music. The
freshman "Y" will meet again Tues
day night

M. Coulter's office, Thursday, Novem
ber 1, at 7:30 p. m., according to
Joseph M. Oliver, Savannah, presi
dent.
Officers for the first term will be
elected.
Y M C. A CONDUCTS
REGULAR VESPER SERVICE
The regular vesper service, con
ducted every Thursday night by the
Y. M. C. A., was held in the Uni
versity Y. M. C. A. rooms at 7:15
o’clock. Morton Hodgson, Geor
gia's first four-letter man, spoke at
the vespers.

increased the number to three. The
faculty members were placed in the
procession according to dignity and
authority. The professor of natural
philosophy und chemistry led, fol
lowed by the professor of mathemat
ics. The professor of languages
came third. By 1830 and 1840,
the number of the faculty had In
creased to eight or ten.
In the early days, the head of
tlic University, which was then only
Franklin college alone, was called
tlic president, and all of the early
presidents were Presbyterians. Since
then, the denominational Influence
which pervaded has been removed.
No Circus Attendance
'(belts was frequently visited by
viir'ons entertaining companies, and
U'e circuses were not the least of
these. The students however, were
forbidden to attend the circuses.
Tit's faculty rule called forth in
genuity. for the students blacked
their faces and went into the part
designated for slaves at the circus.
Another University activity was
the school periodical. It was culled
the Georgia University Magazine,
and the students shortened the name
to the "Gum." It corresponded to
what now is culled the "Georgia
Cracker," except that It was a se
rious magazine.
Centralization of the United
States government is not detrimental
according to the decision rendered
on tlic debate held by the Demos-
thenlan Literary society Wednesday
night. P. S. Oliver. Gainesville, and
Lunsford, Fricks, represented the
affirmative side of the question:
"Resolved. That further centraliza
tion of the government would be
detrimental to tlic United States."
Pryor Fitts, Atlanta, and Hugh Ad-
erhold, Atlanta, were the winning
negative speakers.
An open house discussion followed
tile regular debate. Seven new mem
bers were added to the Demostbenian
roll.
