THE RED AND BLACK Page Five Fair Festivities Attract Crowds Of Merrymakers to Sawdust Trial With glare of lights and blare of brass, a colorful panorama with all the din of the circus, the Gladway of the Clarke County Fair in Ath ens, presenting the Greater Shees- ley Shows all this tveek v/as thrown open Monday. Merrymakers by the hundred have followed the sawdust trail, munched popcorn and ice cream cones, quaffed huge quanti ties of pink lemonade and filled the big pleasure plaza with gaiety. With new wagon showfronts, with nearly all canvas fresh from the tentmakers, with gold leaf lavishly applied, with artistic and execution of all attractions, with colorful em bellishments in the gaily decorated and illuminated rides, with hundreds of brightly hued electric bulbs, with continual “ball-hoes,” revealing handsomely gowned women and clever men, with all wardrobes spic and span and an entire absence of that arch-enemy of outdoor amuse ments dirt, the Greater Sheesley Shows’ midway is a riot of color, life, pep and enthusiasm, a monster entertainment which whirls and throbs for the delight of thrill seek ers. Gorilla is Feature Big Jim, the giant gorilla, the only one in captivity, was the synos- ure of all eyes, he being presented in a specially built cage on the mid way. Big Jim is attended by a ret inue of attendants and his life has been insured by his owner, Capt. John M. Sheesley, by the famous firm of Lloyds in the sum of $30,000. Big Jim was a feature at the Cana dian National Exhibition in Toronto, and was viewed by thousands there. Famous curators of zoological gar dens and scientists have pronounced Big Jim the finest specimen of his type that is now known in the world. He weighs nearly 300 pounds and has an arm reach of ten feet. He is presented with an interesting lecture by his trainer, George Gor don Johnson. A big drawing card is the thrilling autodrome, where spectators gasp and wonder at the whizzing auto and motorcycles as they speed about on a perpendicular “wall of death,” racing wild lions and with a riding bear. Several audiences saw the Broadway Revue, miniature musical comedy, and scores went to see the Land of Wonders, with its fifty va rieties of freak animals. The famous Georgia Minstrels and their jazzy band and orchestra and company of talented colored artists played to ca pacity houses. Rides Are Thrillers The monkey speedway, with tiny Simian race drivers on a big track, was a mecca for young and old. The big circus sideshows were favorites with those who like strange curiosi ties. The World War museum seems complete in every detail and Funland, the crystal maze, the Vampire and other fun show’s kept many in a merry mood. The riding devices, an exposition in themselves, with the Heyday, an English ride from the famous Wem bley Fair, are well kept up and the caterpillar, giant carousal, carriage type Ferris wheel, whirling whip and others vied for popularity with Fun- on-the-Farm, and Thru-the-Rapids, the great laugh-maker of all time. Members of the fair board staff and Boy Scouts are stationed on the grounds to aid in handling the crowds and to maintain the custom ary Sheesley standard of order and decorum. The general verdict last night was that the Sheesley Shows are by far the largest, most modern and cleanly outdoor amusement organization of the collective type ever to visit this vicinity. The big Gladway has been made hard and dry, with the circus aspect of plenty of sawdust. There will be special programs and con certs daily, and the midway will be kept intact, with all attractions op erating until the close of the fair. r. The Bell System is growing faster than ever before in its history and this growth, like the steel growth, is based on the development of men. Today, in the telephone industry, men in supervisory positions must co ordinate many and varied factors. For example, before locating a new central office, population trends are studied. While it is being built, telephone appa ratus is planned, made, delivered and installed on orderly schedule. But more basic than all this, the executive shows leadership by his in sight into the human equation and by the sympathy and understanding with which he adapts individual to job, moulding his men first.
