Integration (Crisis Heads News Eor Quarter

Many interesting news events have
been covered by The Red ami Black
during winter quarter.
The news story of greatest import
this quarter was the integration of
the University and its effects on the
student body. On Jan. 6, Federal
Judge William A. Bootle ordered im
mediate admission of two Negro stu
dents. Hamilton Holmes and Char-
layne A. Hunter.
Later Judge Bootle stayed his
order, only to have Judge Blbert
P. Tuttle reverse the decision. The
Negro students enrolled in classes,
but were suspended for their own
protection as a result of mob actions
on campus. Reinstatement was order
ed. again with Judge Bootle deciding,
and the Negro students returned to
class to stay.
That same week, plans for the
new University coliseum, costing
*3,000,000, were released. Completion
date is set for Jan. 1, 1003. Complete
blueprints will he ready hy June,
11X11.

Wally Butts, Georgia head coach
for 22 years, resigned before the be
ginning of the quarter. Johnny L.
Griffith, formpr freshman coach, wns
selected to replace him. Butts was
dean of the Southeastern Conference
coaches, and is recognized as one of
the nation's greatest mentors.
On Jan. 18, Emily Hope, Univer
sity freshman, was selected “Miss
Georgi i Peach.” She was crowned
In Griffin at the Georgia Peach Grow
ers' Convention.
New football captains for 1961,
announced Jan. 26, are Pete Case,
tackle, and Bill McKenny, halfback.
In the midst of the news events
the University became 176 years old
on Jan. 28.
Leon Galls, Darrell Bigner, Gus
Turnbull, and Joseph Harris repre
sented the University of Georgia on
CBS-TV Feb. 5. The program was
"College Bowl” quiz.
Another television program, “Meet
the Professor” had art department
head Iaunar Dodd and bIx art stu
dents as guests.
The Military Ball was held Feb.
II, and freshman Nancy Cotton was
crowned queen. She wns chosen by
(lie military students in conjunction
with the annual affair. The “Lime-
lighters" furnished music for the
event.
“John Brown,” a play presented
by the University Theatre, had Jack
LaZehnik, playwright, at the open
ing performance. John Davis played
the title role.

A new Innovation was announced
near the last of the quarter. Begin
ning witli spring quarter registra
tion, students in all schools and col
leges will pre-register, eliminating
mass eonfusion on registration day.
Another change was announced. In
volving campus elections. This spring,
University representatives appear on ABC’s ‘‘Meet the Professor”

elections will be held the same week.

speed up the election procedure.
The annual Georgia Press Insti
tute hosted such famous persons as
Milton L. Carr of UPI; Turner Cat-
ledge. The New York Times; and Ed
Dodd, cartoonist-creator of "Mark
Trail.” Lt. Governor Garland Byrd
spoke on closing day of the confer
ence.
Glamour magazine has a Uni
versity entrant for the first time
in its "Ten Best Dressed College
Women” contest. Gay Landrum was
chosen on Feb. 23 as the “Best
Dressed Girl” at Georgia at a Fashion
Show sponsored by The Red and
Black.
The building trend continues at the
University. On March 1, the Board
of Regents approved plans for a nine-
story women's dormitory and dining
hall. The dormitory will house 1,000
I students, and the cafeteria will have
facilities for 2,000 persons. Comple
tion is scheduled for January, 1963.
One big social event of the quarter
was the IFC winter concert held In
Fine Arts. The guest for the evening
was entertainer Dave Gardner. The
comic entertainer performed to a
packed auditorium March 3.
Basketball began the season on a
high note, and finished with a loss
to Florida on March 4. At this game,
Phillip Simpson, Georgia's represen
tative to the all-SEC team, was pre
sented the Joe Jordan trophy. This
was the second year the Dixie (Ga.)
senior had received the trophy as
' outstanding player.
