Elvis lives
By WILLIAM IIAINES
Fntertainment editor
Monday night, CBS aired excerpts form Elvis Presley’s last
concert series, shot in Omaha, Neb., Rapid City, S.D., and a half
dozen other locales. The show was neatly edited to de-emphasize
Presley’s paunch and shortened vocal range, the main thrust of
the program being Elvis’ fans who are to carry on the legacy of
their hero.
Presley’s legions heaped maniacal praise on the ex-trucKer.
One fan’s house was demolished by a tornado and he and his wife
had recently left the hospital because of injuries sustained in the
storm. But in the wake of all the couple’s misery, they could
scrape together $20 or $30 to see their king. Once inside the “big
top’’ performance of a Presley concert, vendors hawked
everything from Elvis necklaces to binoculars at $5 a throw.
It’s still impossible, though, to view Elvis with any sense of
retrospect 50 days after his death. An inflated stomach slowed
down Presley’s gyrations through the leathery toughness of
“Jailhouse Rock, ’ but that boyish grin and shy politeness were
as fetching as ever.
Gail Sheehy, in her best seller Passages, talked of the loss,
pain and growth one experienced through a life crisis or death of

a loved one Elvis was precious; he was part and parcel of the
American way of life and America loved him. He was youth,
though he had aged.
Presley was more attached to my parents’ generation than
mine. I listened with interest to the anthology packages and
singles in the late 60’s and early 70’s (“In the Ghetto” and
“Burning Love”), but 1 missed the growth and mutual
dependence that my parents and Elvis and his fans shared.
Marc Bolan died one month later than Elvis (Sept. 16) in a car
crash with girlfriend Gloria Jones. Bolan, the hump-beat heart of
T. Rex. was 29 and responsible for introducing me to U K. pop
rock back in 1969 “Bang A Gong (Get It On)” blared from the
BBC radio for 13 solid weeks.
I left Bolan behind in a headstrong rush for England's flashier
artists (Bowie, Roxy Music, Mott the Hoople), but it was the T.
Rex founder that gave me my first taste of music across the
Atlantic. When I read of his death, I felt as if someone had pulled
a rug out from under me. I suspect that is how millions of Elvis
fans felt
But still we move on Eighty-five look-alike Presleys are now
working in the United States.
Elvis .Costello is not a Presley posturer; he’s got Buddy Holly
glasses and a dirt-gravelly voice. His first album on Stiff
Records, My Aim is True, has “Elvis is King” written all over
the front and back jacket So lighten up, America, Elvis never
really left

“We here at Stiff think Elvis
is King.” Now wait a minute.
Who’s fooling who here? Is
somebody trying to push this
twerpish-looking fellow caught
in an incredibly twisted pose
as a certain legendary rock
and roll figure?
Well, not exactly. You see,
those kindly people at Stiff
Records aren't always playing
with a full deck. Stiff Records
is a small independent British
record label masterminded by
pop genius Nick Loew ta
founding member of Brinsley
Schwartz, if that helps).
Stiff is dedicated to creating
good music and having a good
time doing so—and. as most
people in the recording busi
ness will tell, that is no easy
task Of course, it helps to be
somewhat demented.
The best thing about Stiff
Records is that Nick Lowe
refuses to take himself seri
ously. What can you say about
a guy who comes up with
SEEZ-2-B as a filing number
for the second side of a record
or produces a record under the
aegis of Keepitasahobby Pro
ductions?
BY NOW, it’s probably
obvious that the opening line of
this article refers to none other
than England’s newest singing
sensation. Elvis Costello 0-
kay, Elvis may not be a
household name yet, but give
the guy time. Talent will out
The truth is that among ail
the madness. Stiff has a real
winner in Elvis Costello. His
debut album, entitled My Aim
is True, shows Elvis to be one
of the more offbeat lyricists in

recent years
Offbeat here is not meant in
a pejorative sense. It's just
that. while he seems to be
writing about topics that so
many others have covered, like
sex. unrequited love, having to
work at a job—mundane
topics, mind you—the way he
says these things reflects some
keen observation, a sense of
humor, and, most of all. a way
with words.
From a strictly musical
standpoint, Elvis is a minimal
ist. Not in the sense of being a
punk rocker, but rather in
paring down the instrumenta
tion to bare necessities. There
are no synthesizers, no 90-piece
orchestras, no three lead
guitarists. Nonetheless, the
man rocks with more authority
than any of those Steve
Miller-Geils- Frampton- BadCo-
Heart-Skynyrd aggregations
that equate more with better.
The difference we’re talking
about here isn’t one of how
much to rock, simply how to do
it. Elvis knows what he's
doing.
“Mystery Dance,” song three
on side two. is a powerful
rocker dealing with the enigma
of sex. and it's also the song on
the album which most directly
evokes the spirit of Elvis’
namesake.
A sly sense of humor
emerges in the third verse of
the song: “I was down under
the covers in the middle of the
night-Trying to discover my
left foot from my right-You
can see those pictures in a
pretty ifiagazine-But what’s
the use of looking, if you don’t
know what they mean?” You’ll
also get off on a superb
rockabilly guitar solo, courtesy
of Elvis
It’s hard to figure out where
Elvis is coming from He's an
unusual talent with a very
personalized style (a close
American equivalent might be
Jonathan Richman).
In his tirst try, Elvis Costello
has come up with a good show.
It’ll be interesting to see what
comes from him in the future.
Hopefully, he’ll be able to land
an American distributor (Stiff
is only available as an import
here) With a little bit of luck,
he ought to be able to make a
go of things. After all, it’s hard
to keep a good name down.

The source added that
Mooney had paid off “about
half" of the loan he had taken
out to finance Somebody’s

When asked about the $5000

Florence by Mooney to kill
Harty, the source said “John
didn’t have that kind of money.
“We could have moved out
here (Somebody's Pizza) for
less than that,” the source
added.
Harty was found dead in his

his girlfriend on Aug. 30.
Florence was arrested by
officers from the Georgia
Bureau of Investigation, the
Atlanta Fugitive Squad, and
the Clarke County Police at his

days after detectives had

After Wednesday’s hearing,
the case was bound over from
Magistrate’s Court to Superior
Court, and indictment hearings
against Florence will be held

The new movie release,
llerowork, certainly seems to
need a heroic effort to save it
from box office disaster. The
film tries to portray a
new-type hero in our fine
American style and fails
miserably.
It is not surprising to find
that the star role is played by
the virtually unknown Rod
Browning, for the script holds
no interest for the audience
much less for the true actor.
The plot, if indeed it may be
called so. begins with a
well-meaning troublemaker
turned hero. Naturally, he
manages to become a legend in
his own time by saving little
boys from fires, by shooting up
the bad guys who. of course, he
does not aim to kill and to top
it all off he catches the famed
ice cream killer.
Has ever a hero worked
alone save Superman? Did the
Lone Ranger work without
Tonto. or did Batman work
without Robin? Every Robin
Hood had a Little John. So. our
hero takes on a partner.
It becomes the duo o! the
Masked Man and Side Winder.
OUR HERO cannot dare
expect to do such noteworthy
♦hings without the antagonist
arriving on the scene. In this
case it is the District Attorney
who wants a piece of the action
for himself. The DA alone
wants to be responsible for
catching the ice cream killer.
Just who is this “ice cream
killer?’’ He happens to be that

third party who is so common
ly the objective of the two
opposing forces. His role of
violence includes abducting,
raping and killing women
(preferably virgins) His ac
tions nor his murder victims,
however, are ever seen by the
viewer
THE TOO-SIIARP contrast
between the first heroworks of
the Masked Man and the vile
activities of the ice cream
killer is the fault of the
producer, Dirk Petersmann.
and the director, Michael
Adrian It is the fault of the
actors for their poor results
which do not carry off the
script.
The movie, all points consi
dered. seemed to be a very
unsuccessful take-off on the
Mel Brooks films coupled with
an equally distasteful slant on
something comparable to the
Son of Sam murders. The two
do not mix. It is doubtful if
they would mix even under the
right conditions.
THERE ALWAYS, however,
can be found a little bit of good
in almost everything and so in
this case, despite their com
bined efforts, there are posi
tive points. There was a feeling
of excitement that accompan
ied the big chase scene and a
few of the punch lines did go
over well. The biggest enter
tainment. though, was to laugh
at the inadequacy of the whole
production.
It appears that it could boost
anyone’s ego, something we all
