"I like to talk about winning
<and> 1 like to win," the
self proclaimed world’s strong
est man told the Athens
Jaycees Monday night
Paul Anderson, holding the
weightlifing record of 6270
pounds, emphasized to the
nearly three dozen Jaycees
gathered for their annual
awards banquet the necessity
of a positive attitude toward
free enterprise.
Anderson operates youth
homes which teach moral
standards and spiritual goals
‘‘I support free enterprise,”
Anderson said. “It is human
nature to want to compete. If I
do not have a chance to lx*
lx*tier than you. it is hell.” he
added.
Citing current disillusion
ment with free enterprise.
Anderson asked. “What has
happened? Where did we lose
control of free enterprise? Why
is free enterprise a dirty word
to most of our young people?”
Anderson said a recent poll
Weightlifter Paul Anderson pounds a nail into wood with his bare hand
showed a significant percen
tage of junior high and high
school students questioned
whether a business should
make a profit.
A possible reason for the
lack of faith among young
people for free enterprise is a
general lack of knowledge
taught about the system.
Anderson said.
The reason the young have
not been taught about free
enterprise is because the
teachers have not been a part
of free enterprise. Anderson
said.
But the Olympic gold medal
winner said businessmen
should not go on the defensive
because “you do not score
often on defense.' Instead.
Anderson urged his listeners to
change tactics.
Anderson also said too much
emphasis was placed in this
country on being a good loser.
People are prodded to learn to
lose gracefully, and this
prodding has had a detrimen
tal effect, he said.
Anderson also pertormed two
feats of strength Standing
behind a bench which he used
as a podium. Anderson said,
"everywhere I go I am
expected to do something
strong.”
Placing a one-and-one-half
inch thick plank on the bench,
a nail on the plank, and a
much-folded handkerchief on
the nail, he drove the nail
through the plank with one
blow of his bare hand.
He then lifted the bench,
loaded with six Jaycees, four
inches off the floor.

No flu outbreak
expected here
By JOHN VARDEMAM
Staff writer
The recent spread of Russian
flu in various parts of the
country has caused some
worry for the University
Health Services staff.
Although there is no cause
for alarm at the moment, some
preparations have been started
in case the epidemic reaches
the campus, according to Dr.
Lyman Phillips, clinical direc
tor at Health Services.
Presently, the nearest site
afflicted with the Russian flu is
Memphis. Term.. Phillips said.
Recent flu cases in Decatur
and Albany, however, are also
highly suspect, he added.
PHILLIPS STRESSED there
was no reason to expect a
Russian flu outbreak at the
University, but a “contingency
plan” is being worked out to
contend with the sickness
should it strike.
He mentioned he had discus
sed the matter with the
director of Housing, members
of Food Services, and a doctor
from the Communicable Di
sease Center (CDC) in Atlanta.
If a Russian flu epidemic
should occur at the University.
Health Services would treat
the cases of commuters,
married housing and apart
ment dwellers. Clines would be
set' up in the dorms, and
trained personnel would help
those living in the resident
halls. Phillips said
University Housing is aware
of the sRuatioa and will be
ready if the Russian bug
becomes a problem on cam
pus. according to Daniel
Hallenbeck. director of hous
ings. “We are on a semi-alert
or on-call basis.” he said.
"WE HAVE the names of
staff members over 25 (per
sons more than 25 years old
are the least susceptible to the
Russian flu* identified should
there be any need for them to
meet and be trained (by
Health Services),” he said.
These staff members would
assist in the clinics set up in
the residence halls, he added.
The names of companies
which offer vending machines
containing pharmaceutical
supplies are being looked into
by Food Services, according to
Phillips. Vending machines
containing drugs for treatment
of the sickness and machines
offering hot food such as soup
could be placed in the dorms
for easy access, he said.
“Dr. Gary Noble of the
virology branch of the CDC.
expressed interest in establish
ing an observation post and if
proper clearance, medical and
administrative, can be ob
tained. the CDC will be here on
campus to help us monitor and
contend with an outbreak
should it occur.” Phillips said
DISCI SSION IS only at the
negotiation stage and Phillips
was unsure as to whether the
CDC would conduct the surveil
lance measures. In the past,
the CDC has conducted a study
of flu cases on the campus
through the use of telephone
surveys. Phillips said.
Russian flu spreads at a high
rate when it hits, especially on
campuses according to Phil
lips “Russian flu is not a
erious illness. Actually, it is
rather mild. The problem is
that (when it strikes) everyone
gets sick within a week,"
Phillips said.
