America’s own punks play Atlanta
By USA JANE KOIINKK
ATLANTA—John Sinclair, a
Marxist and perhaps the
ultimate punk, coined the
phrase "punk rock," and
Lester Bangs, a writer for
Creem magazine, popularized
it. That was years ago when
the punk rock movement
consisted of groups like the
MC5, the Detroit Wheels, and
the Bob Seger System
These punk rockers were
louder, simpler, and more
profane than the other rock
audiences Now we still have
"punk rock," and the
Kamones, who played last
Saturday night at the Atlanta
Municipal Auditorium, gave
the audience everything that
might be expected of them
The Kamones are one of this
"ountry's most successful punk
rock groups and have recorded
three albums, the most latest
being Kocket to Russia.
Their hair is short; their
blue jeans have unpatched
holes at the knees They wear
black tee shirts and hlack
leather jackets and chains to
offer befitting ornamental de
corations to their outfits They

Behind the Kamones was a
large banner with an American
Eagle printed in white on it
The usual inscription of “e
plurihus unim" that appears
with the eagle was replaced by
"Hey ho. Let \ go!"
The audience .creamed the
motto along with Joey Kamone
kept on singing in time with
the rhythm
But all the feverish excite
ment that went on during the
Kamone’s set was preceded by
something tamer. The
Runaways are on tour with the
Kamones as the second bill,
and an Atlanta based band
called Cruise-o-Matic opened
the evening's musical events.
Cruise-o-Matic played music
that was boring even when it
first came out 20 years ago
And as if that isn't intolerable
enough they played at such
high decibels that the Kleenex
stuffed in my ears couldn't
keep the ache away.
Oh. I suppose that I should
say something nice about the
band. After all. I wouldn't
want to appear like I'm on a
"hate-trip" Johnny Hibbert.
the lead singer of Cruise-o-
Matic. has a nice voice. Not
only that, but he has a nice
hair cut.
The Runaways played se
cond on the punk bill They
have just released their third
album. Waiting for the Night
All four members of this band
are females and rather young,
which is good for the
Runaways because I doubt that
they would have received a
recording contract if thev
were men, or older females
But maybe the highlight of
their performance was the
guitarist's tight black leather
jumpsuit. I mean, there are a
lot of people who are turned on
by seeing post-adolescents in
tough, tight clothing Gosh, she
looks so innocent but I II l>et
the devil's in her car'
However. I’m interested in
hearing the Runaways again in
a few years because they
might figure out that it would
be more profitable to learn
how to play better instead of
relying on gimics They do
have a platform to build upon,
and il they work hard enough
they could t>e a good band
After the second intermission
the Ramones l>egan to play
From the offset of their set
they played with incredible
power The audience forgot the
two previous hands, came out
of their half drugged, half
bored trances, stood upon their
chairs, and danced until the
Ramones had played tour
encores.
The energy from the
Ramones banged you in the
face, and while you were
trying to regain consciousness
from the jolt, you became
seduced by the same violence
that hit you You started to feel
something that relieved you of
frustration and anger at
anything and everything
the Ramones danced on
stage harder than anyone last
Saturday night and performed
all their songs as you might
hear them on record.
The only member of the
Ramones who didn't slither
and bounce about the stage
was the diummer. Tommy
Kamone, who looked as if he
were on a vacation with his
white tee shirt and black
sunglasses He just sat back
behind his drums and ap
pea red only to move his mouth
occasionally.
The performance by the
Kamones was probably one of
the more satisfying punk
events to hit Atlanta. It's a
shame that they had two bands
in front that could not play
But 1 would sit through those
bands again to hear the
Ramones in all their punk
glory

Delbert McClinton brought
his seven man band to the Last
Resort Tuesday night. A
sparse crowd of less than too
was treated to one of the most
overwhelmingly average shows
of this or any other decade.
Delbert and the boys play
"progressive country," called
in other circles by such names
as "redneck rock," "Southern
Boogie." and "12-bar Dixie
blues " What all that means is
that they aren't country and
they aren’t rock They are
somewhere in between.
McClinton got his start
playing harmonica and rhythm
guitar behind such blues greats
as Bobby "blue” Bland and
Howlin' Wolf After that, he
struck out on his own He has.
since 1975. recorded three
alburns for ABC records None
of them were massively
successful, so he still plays
places like the Resort on half
price beer night.
The problem was that after
II minutes. McClinton s music
all started to sound alike At
least three songs sounded
exactly like "Statesboro
Blues" with different words.
The rest sounded like "Randall
Bramlett meets Marshall Tuc
ker and Jerry Jeff Walker "
McClinton didn't sound so
much like anybody as he
sounded like everybody.
Despite the presence of deja
vu lie.. I’ve heard all this
before! several selections did
work quite nicely. "Hard
Headed Woman of Mine" is a
chugging, smoldering piece of
country-fried K&B dominated
by Robert Hornell’s smooth
sax solos and some fine
electric piano fills.
McClinton's finest moments,
however, came as he caressed
two lovely ballads. "I Don’t
Want to Hear It Anymore" and
"Memories of You." "Don’t
Want to Hear It" is (what
else?) a tale of love gone
wrong. The strength, though, is
in its haunting melody, which
is not unlike Van Morrison's
classic TudcIo HflMJI
"Memories ot You is less
progressive and more country,
which is why it was so
welcome in the snow. The
chorus is the essence of
country music: "Your picture
used to help some- Now it just
makes me blue- everywhere I
look I find bits and pieces and
— memories of voti "
Sadly, though, the rest of the
show was less interesting. The
other selections, for the most
part, weren't inspired enough
to raise the show as a whole
above a C-plus
For now. it seems, the
world will have to hang in
there a while longer before
Delbert McClinton replaces the
Bee Gees at the top of the
charts He just hasn't got tnat
touch of greatness that makes
a few country singers instantly
great, but others not Rather
than being exemplary of his
genre. McClinton is merely
representative of it.
