Georgia picked up six first downs on the drive, and faced only three third-down situations, converting all three, one for the touchdown On only three plays of the drive did the Dogs fail to advance the ball — Belue's incomplete pass and a pair of Walker no-gainers It was a straight-up-the- gut, no-nonsense drive Walker, who toted the ball 47 times for 192 yards on the day, carried the ball 11 times for 65 of the yards Belue scrambled a couple of times and attempted only three passes, completing two to Scott, one of them a clutch 17-yarder on a third-and eight from the Florida 47 Walker ran it five straight times from there (the Gator 30). getting nine, 18. two, none and the TD, a one-yard dive. It was a clock-killing, game-breaking drive Georgia took possession with just over 10 minutes to play and when Florida got its hands on the ball again there were only two minutes, 27 seconds remaining. And then, on Florida's first offensive play, Georgia safety Steve Kelly put a bone-crushing hit on Gator wideout Spencer Jackson, w ho had just grabbed a pass from quarterback Wayne Peace, forcing a fumble that Georgia noseguard Eddie Weaver recovered at the Florida 27. In the madness in the Georgia lockerroom following the game, most of the Bulldog players wanted to talk about little else but the drive. Even Kelly, whose hit on Jackson was one of the game's biggest plays, shrugged off talking about it and emphasized the drive. "That drive was one of the best drives I've ever seen," Kelly said. "They (the of fense) had to go all the way down the field and they did it." “It was a great drive," Scott said. “We were under stress, 95 yards away. We had to go the length of the field. We hadn’t done it all year "But we came through I feel great. We passed a big test as a unit." Walker, stopped by Gator defense here, vaulted to game-winner on next play PENNY BEER iihI IVrloriuancc GEORGIA SQUARE MALL Main Lmranw 546-PERM Bv MIKE CHRISTENSEN Krd and Hlack AteUlanl Spurts Editor JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In 1980 it took a miracle ; this vear. however, no miracle was required Last year, down 21-20 to Flonda with just over a minute to piay in the game, Georgia got a gift from the gods — a 93-yard, Buck Belue-to-Lindsay Scott pass- run touchdown that propelled the Bulldogs to the No. 1 spot in the polls and eventually the national championship But last Saturday the Dogs didn't require any help from above They went out and got it on their own Again trailing the Gators 21-20 — this time with 10:16 to play in the contest — Georgia launched a 95-yard 17-play drive that ended with Herschel Walker hurdling the Florida line for a game winning touchdown It was a near-perfect, machine-like drive Except for an offsides penalty on the sixth play of the drive and a Belue pass that was batted down at the line of scrim mage by Gator noseguard David Galloway, the Dogs could do no wrong revealing to Dog coaches By REISIIA HKIIR Krd and Hlack Staff W rilrr Intra-squad competition during the women's and men's Red-Black meet this weekend showed both coaches just what kind of teams they have. For women’s Coach Jack Bauerle, speed was an interesting factor. “This is the fastest intra-squad meet I've ever seen," he said. "The gals really swam fast." "We swam tired, too," Bauerle added. “Before the meet we had lifted weights and we'd had a week of strenuous practice. " Three freshmen and two transfers made Bauerle proud as the newcomers added depth to the 1981 squad. "Mary Jane Billheimer, Allyson Farquhar and Libba Newman have all competed in national meets and have good competitive backgrounds," Bauerle said. “Carol Downey and Barbie Sumner transferred from swimming schools and both will add to the squad." The 1981 SEC Coach of the Year was especially pleased with Billheimer's 500-yard freestyle (5:06 24) and 200-yard freestyle (1:56 70). All-America Belh Cuddeback pleased Bauerle with a 10:33 94 swim in the 1000-yard freestyle and a 2:10.34 in the 200- yard fly. "The Black squad won by a slight margin, but the experience is what is most im portant." Bauerle said. For the men. Coach Pete Scholie showed a bit of concern. "We had a few bright swims, but at the present, our team is suffering from a lack of quality depth It's not as good as it's been in the past two years. Our freshmen have got to hurry in their maturity for us to be competitive, or its going to be a long season," Scholie said.
