JACKSONVILLE, Fla -
Herschel Walker may be
hard-pressed to win the
Heisman Trophy this year,
considering the hot year that
Southern Cal tailback
Marcus Allen is having, but
Georgia would not have
wanted anyone else
Saturday as the Dogs
defeated Florida 26-21
Walker rushed for 192
yards and scored four
touchdowns, bringing his
total to 15 for the year He
also caught four passes for
55 yards
He may not have done any
of that if not for his own
mtscue in the second quarter
which seemed to fire up the
Georgia sophomore
After Florida broke open a
scoreless tie with a 54-yard
scoring strike from Wayne
Peace to Steve Miller,
Walker muffed the ensuing
kickoff. Walker ran up to
catch the low line drive, but
the ball bounded past him
Walker, thinking he must
return the ball after it
touched him, ran past
Lindsay Scott who was
motioning for him to stop. He
was pounced on by several
Florida Gators at the 2-yard
line. On the next play,
fullback Konnie Stewart
fumbled, setting up
Florida's second score
From that point on.
Walker was unstoppable
Walker scored his first TD
with just over two minutes
remaining in the half as he
took a short pass over the
middle and ran past the
Florida linebackers and
secondary for a 24-yard
touchdown.
"I think I proved today
that I can run hard, catch the
ball and run with it and drop
kickoffs," a smiling Walker
said after the game
Walker said he wasn't sure
about the muffed kickoff He
didn’t know he could have
downed the ball in the end
zone
"I didn't come to college to
read college- football rule
books,” Walker said
Walker’s second score,
also on a pass, tied the game
in the third quarter at 14-all
Walker capped the Georgia
scoring in the game's final
minute with a l -yard dive
And Saturday, Walker
continued to decimate the
Georgia record book
In 2U regular season
games at Georgia Walker is
1-2-3 in most rushes in a
game His 47 carries
Saturday broke his own
school record he set last
year
Walker already has 312
rushes this year, eclipsing
the old mark of 287 set by
Willie McClendon in 1978
And to prove just what a
workhorse Walker has been
for the Dawgs this year and
last, Walker has carried the
ball more times in his 20
games than anyone else in
Georgia history
Walker has accumulated
three of the four highest
single-game rushing totals in
Georgia history.
With every carry he adds
to his Georgia record for
most career yards He now
has 3,117.
Walker, with 30 touch
downs in his two years, is
only two behind Charley
Trippi, who scored 32 in
three seasons with Georgia

Two Fingers is all it takes.
To the uninitiated, the Georgia-Florida game is thought of
as just another intense Southeastern Conference rivalry.
To the uninformed, the "World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail
Party” is thought of as just another way for a bunch of crazy
southerners to get bombed out of their skulls, make complete
asses of themselves and be damn proud of it.
To the inexperienced Bulldog follower, statistics and
rankings are thought to play a big part in the outcome of the
spectacle in Jacksonville
As an uninitiated, uninformed and inexperienced Bulldog
follower, I plead guilty on all three counts, and hold my head
in shame.
Even after last year's miracle on Duval Street. I didn't
quite understand w hat 1 had just seen I hadn't just w itnessed
a Georgia miracle, I had witnessed a Georgia-Florida
miracle. Nothing can or ever will top one of these precious
gems. I didn't understand at the time.
Having grown up far from the red clay hills of Georgia
football. I was not properly tutored during my formative
years on the true meaning of the goings-on inside that
concrete fish bowl they call the Gator Bowl.
The only two other Georgia-Florida games I can vaguely
remember are those played in 1975 and 1976
In the 1975 game, I faintly recall a tight end named Richard
Appleby sloshing through the mud on an end around,
suddenly stopping and lofting a pass far downfield to a
speedy receiver named Gene Washington The only reason I
thought anything about it was because my favorite football
player at the time was also named Gene Washington; he
being a stylish receiver for the Minnesota Vikings Georgia-
Florida? Big deal!
In '76, I remember a stupid fourth down call by a soon-to-
be-fired Florida coach, Doug Dickey, that seemed to give an
uninspired Georgia team the momentum it needed to go
ahead and win the game
I can see quarterback Ray Goff diving into the end zone to
give Georgia the victory and hopes for a Sugar Bowl bid. It
was a very exciting game; but Georgia-Florida, what does
that have to do with anything? Little did I know
This past week preceding the game, I had remarked to a
few people that 1 hoped the game wouldn't be boring. They
merely chuckled at my naivete and informed me not to worry
about it being boring This was a Georgia-Florida game
Florida, nationally ranked in pre-season polls, came into
Saturday's clash with an uncompelling 5-3 record, follow ing a
pathetic 14-12 loss to Auburn last week In its only other
televised game this year (against Mississippi State; the
Gators bumbled and fumbled around, looking like they
couldn't beat an egg in a chicken coop with a helicopter
Meanwhile. Georgia was on a roll with five straight
victories, including an awesome shellacking of Temple last

The Florida players were distraught after losing for the
2nd year in a row, while playing their hearts out The fans of
both teams were hoarse and nearly comatose after cheering
their voices out and drinking their livers out. Coaches Dooley
and Pell were still trying to piece together their frazzled
nerves.
week The Big Red and Black Machine was running on all
cylinders, with Buck Belue at the controls and his trusty
sidekick. Humble Herschel Walker, terrorizing defenses and
taking no prisoners.
The Bulldogs were rounding themselves into championship
form, and I was positive a 14-point or more victory was in the
cards
I still refused to believe that any kind of traditional
intangible had anything to do with the outcome of this ball
game. The Bulldogs were clearly the better team and I fully
anticipated a blowout. "Doggie" style. Unfortunately, just
about the only blowouts that occur in the Gator Bowl when
Georgia and Florida get together are in the stands.
When Wayne Peace aired out along one for six, and
Georgia's offense started stumbling around in a daze, like
many of the over 68,000 in attendance, I began to get a little
nervous.
Then, when the Florida end zone turned into a Bermuda
Triangle tor Herschel Walker, the Gators were up 14-0, and
the only rolling Georgia was doing was over on their backs
But then something happened I don't know whether it was
Bulldog pride or Gator Bowl magic, but Georgia retaliated
with all they had, and what they had was Herschel Walker.
Belue got the ball to the "Humble One" as many times as
possible, and Walker did the rest. He caught two passes for
touchdowns and dived in on the sweep for another, as
Georgia posted 20 unanswered points, to leave Florida
buckling on the ropes.
Here we go, I thought, lets run 'em off the field. Dooley was
just giving them a little bait, not it's time to reel 'em in But
as I now realize, this is no ordinary game, and it’s foolish to
think the game is over until the final 1:03 is played
Peace, as usual, came out winging, and moved the ball
masterfully down field, culminating the drive in a beautiful
lob to Spencer Jackson in the corner of the end zone. Florida
reclaimed the lead 21-20.
But as you all know, 17 plays and 95 yards later, Herschel
headed for the clouds, and the game was over.

After all this, I finally understand Georgia-Florida is
something special. It can t be figured out. so there's no use

Now what's this about Auburn?
