Thatcher demands Argentine withdrawal
(t'PI) — Britain and Argentina stepped up war prepara
tions Thursday and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher
demanded the withdrawal of all Argentine troops from the
Falkland Islands in a tense meeting with Secretary of State
Alexander Haig
Britain bluntly warned it would sink any Argentine ship
that violated its blockade of the islands beginning Sunday
Mar fever swept Argentina as men lined up to enlist for
battle against the British fleet steaming toward the
Falklands, the British colony invaded and seized by Argen
tina last week
However, Argentine Foreign Minister Nicanor Costa
Mendez, arriving in Buenos Aires from New York, told
reporters, “The danger of war is fading."
He did not elaborate and both sides issued stern ultimata as
they prepared for war
Haig, who rushed to London in a bid to defuse the crisis,
held one-hour meetings with Thatcher and the new foreign
secretary Francis Pym
At their meeting at 10 Downing Street, Thatcher told Haig
Britain would not negotiate the future of the Falklands until
all Argentine troops are withdrawn and the islands are
returned. British officials said
The officials said Thatcher called Argentina's invasion of
the islands agression against a free people and insisted that a
dictator should not be allowed to get away with such actions
with impunity
Haig, who on arrival in London warned the crisis was
"very tense and very difficult,” made no statements on the
talks.
Dispatched by President Reagan to try to avert fighting
between Britain and Argentian, Haig said he had no
"American-approved solution" to the crisis and would not
formulate one until he had talked with Thatcher and with
Argentine leaders in Buenos Aires, to where he is flying on
Friday
British officials said Britain would insist on the withdrawal
of Argentine troops from the Falklands. a chain of rugged
islands in the icy waters of the South Atlantic, 450 miles off
the Argentine coast and 8,000 miles from Britain.
As an armada of about 40 ships — the largest warfleet
assembled by Britain in 26 years — steamed towards the
Falklands. Defense Secretary John Nott warned Britain
"w ill shoot first " and sink any Argentine ship entering a 200
mile blockade zone around the islands
"We will sink them," Nott said in an interview on ABC's
Good Morning America The blockade, announced Wednes
day night, will begin at 11 p m EST Sunday.
The main British fleet was still more than two weeks away
from the Falklands but military sources said the nuclear-
powered submarine Superb was already in the South Atlan-
taic with a second hunter-killer submarine en route.
Yet another British ship, the luxury liner Canberra, was re
quisitioned by the government and loaded with 2,000 crack
troops, including commandos and paratroopers, as it
prepared to set sail to join the fleet.
In Argentina, the military junta pushed ahead with an
airlift of troops to the islands, shuttling in Hercules C-130
transport planes loaded reinforcements
Pamela Reid, who fled the islands along with many of the
1,800 English-speaking residents, said, "It is not pretty there
right now Many people are heading for the countryside to
escape a possible battle for the city (Port Stanley)."
Argentina alerted 50,000 reservists and more than 200
volunteers lined up under a bright sun in downtown Buenos
Aires to enlist
"I-et the British come," one said "They can put up or shut
up They’re just a bunch of pirates and always have been,"
Roads may help library access
ATLANTA (UPI) -
Mayor Andrew Young
proposed a pair of sunken
highways Thursday
through Atlanta's “Great
Park" greenery, to provide
quick access to former
President Carter's planned
library.
Young said he would
campaign in neigh
borhoods affected by the
road to hear public
proposals for changes in
the plan before submitting
the four-lane plan to the
city council.
Young said the proposal
would reduce traffic flow
on smaller streets and
improve the quality of life
in some of the quiet
residential neighborhoods
where residents have been
fighting any highway use of
the Great Park land
“What we build here will
be a prime asset, in per
petuity, for the city of
Atlanta and for those
neighborhoods," Young
said.
Carter, retired in Plains,
has said he wants his
presidential library in the
Great Park — but that it
needs a four-lane road to
provide traffic access.
The 219-acre Great Park
tract, acquired by the state
for the defunct 1-485
highway from downtown
Atlanta to Stone Mountain,
has been the subject of
local controversy for
several years Neigh
borhood groups who suc
cessfully fought the in
terstate highway have
bitterly opposed any road
use of the land, saying it
would disrupt their quiet
residential areas.
The Georgia Department
of Transportation and
developers, however, have
urged a four-lane road for
the land — which Young
hedged on during his
mayoral campaign last
year.
Young emphasized that,
with the roads sunken, "it's
designed to avoid ex
pansion" of the highways
into an eight-lane ex
pressway.
Pruett admits murder, found guilty
COLUMBUS, Miss. (UPI)
— Marion Albert Pruett, who
depicted himself as a “crazy
mad dog killer," was con
victed Thursday of the
murder of a Jackson savings
and loan firm employee he
kidnaped in a robbery.
The circuit court jury of
nine men and three women
deliberated only 37 minutes
before returning the guilty
verdict against the curly-
haired, one-eyed ex-convict
Pruett showed no outward
emotion when the verdict
was announced, but there
was spontaneous applause
from members of the vic
tim's family and friends in
the courtroom.
Pruett took the stand in his
own behalf earlier in the day
— admitting he killed Peggy
Lowe, 43, of Brandon, after
taking her hostage Sept. 17,
1981. He said he was ready to
accept whatever punishment
— including death — he is
given
Under state law, a
separate jury proceeding is
required to determine the
sentence. Pruett could be
sentenced to the gas
chamber or given life in
prison.
Pruett, 32, told the jury he
was a born-again Christian
who accepted Jesus about
24 months ago and had been
forgiven by the Lord.
“If the jury decides to let
me die, then let it be 1 know
my spirit is going to heaven
I have been forgiven," he
said.
Defense attorney Alvin
Binder, who rose to national
prominence earlier this year
in his defense of Wayne
Williams for the Atlanta
child slayings, did not deny
Pruett's guilt, but argued he
should not be convicted of
capital murder.
Binder contended Pruett
had walked away from Lowe
after taking her to a wooded
area in west Alabama, and
intended at the time to leave
her alive This ended the
kidnaping phase of the crime
and left it a case of simple
murder — which doesn't
carry a death penalty — the
veteran trial lawyer said.
District Attorney Ed
Peters discounted the
defense arguments. He
referred several times to
Pruett as “mad dog” and
told the panel the woman
never actually was freed by
Pruett
Pruett admitted under
cross-examination he also
killed "three or four" other
people during a six-month-
long murder and robbery
spree before his arrest in
October near Amarillo,
Texas. He said he is charged
with a murder in New
Mexico, two killings in
Colorado and another in
Arkansas.
The trial was moved to
Columbus because of
publicity the case received
in the Jackson area
He became visibly upset,
however, when Peters
repeatedly pressed for
details of Lowe’s final hours.
He finally broke.
"Don't you think the Lowe
family has been through
enough?" the bearded 32-
year-old Pruett shouted,
pounding his fist on the
witness stand. "I killed Mrs.
Lowe I’ve admitted it. Why
don't you sit down and just
shut up?"
After a short recess,
Pruett apologized to the jury
for his outburst, but refused
to answer any more
questions, instead taking the
5th amendment.
Lowe, mother of two, was
taken hostage when Pruett,
wearing a blond wig at the
time, held up the
Metrocenter branch of
Unifirst Savings and Loan
Co. in Jackson and escaped
with $6,893 Pruett was
picked up on a traffic
violation in Texas a month
later, returned to Jackson,
and on Oct. 28, 1981, led
officers to the victim's
partially nude body in a
remote, wooded area of West
Alabama
Pruett readily admitted
the killing last fall and,
during a televised interview,
described himself as a drug
user and “mad dog killer."
