>■ Picasso comes to Athens By MONICA SMITH Staff Writer The works of one of the greatest artists of all time are coming to campus. “Atlanta Celebrates Picasso," a city-wide event celebrating the life and times of Pablo Picasso, is including Athens in an “exploratori- um" of themed events. These events are in con junction with the High Museum of Art’s exhibi tion “Picasso: Masterworks from the Museum of Modem Art.” The Georgia Museum of Art will host the exhibition today through Nov. 23 in the Martha Thomas Donos Gallery, which will showcase five works on paper from the permanent collec tion of the Georgia Museum of Art. “It’s a small display of works," said Patricia Phagan, curator of prints and drawings at the Georgia Museum of Art, who also put the show together. Laurie Kirshbaum, vice president of commu nication at the WoodrufT Arts Center in Atlanta, explained how the Georgia Museum of Art was chosen to host the exhibition. “We were thinking, ‘How can we incluue lots of organizations in Atlanta’s events?,’" Kirshbaum said. “So we put out feelers and met with the head of the Georgia Museum and decided to include it in ‘Atlanta Celebrates Picasso.’" The exhibition will include “The Guitar" (1912-13), a Cubist watercolor, “L’Araignee,” an etching and aquatint published in 1942 for a new edition of BufTon’s Histone Naturelle; and SHOW PREVIEW The Georgia Museum of Art Is free and open to the public and is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. until 5 p.m., and closed Mondays. Dance of Fawns (1957), a lithograph of freely drawn mythical figures. Also displayed will be “Pour Roby," an elegant line etching of a face, and some widely distributed work from the artist’s later years, which was also offered by the Collector’s Guide in the 1960s The earliest work in the collection is “The Guitar," a modem composition executed during the artist’s Synthetic Cubist period. “It’s a very good example of (Picasso’s) cubist style," Phagan said. “It’s a colorful example of where he put his initial thoughts for an idea he had. The title refers to what one sees in the pic ture — the suggestion of a guitar, but the artist goes further and implies a fourth dimension of sound, movement and time through a cacophonous repetition of angular and curved shapes.” The watercolor emphasizes abstraction through its flat patterns and interlocking shapes. “Often Picasso would use watercolor because it is a faster medium than oil. and it was color, not black and white,” she said. Pull your head out from under that “stone" and listen to BlackHawk’s rendition of “Wild Horses" or George Jones’ version of “Time Is On My Side." Doctor’s Orders: John Berry is postponing the release of his new album, “Crazy For The Girl,” due to a polyp on his vocal cords. His current single, “The Stone," has been pulled from the radio until the album comes out. After doctors told Berry to rest, the polyp disappeared within a week. Singer, Author, Actress: Her first book came out Friday, and now LeAnn Rimes is shooting for her first movie. “Holiday in Your Heart" is an ABC-TV movie based on Rimes’ Christmas book. Rimes plays a singer faced with a moral dilemma. She must choose between going on the road or going to visit her dying grandmother. Gag me gently with a pitchfork.
