DRUGS: Risk grows
as stress increases
► From Page IB
effects of caffeine.
Although students may
pull all-nighters to review
their material, Bender
said many people don’t real
ize the affects of sleep depri
vation.
Sleep is the time for the
body to rejuvinate and reen
ergize the brain. Students
without enough rest can’t
recall information well, she
said.
With lack of sleep as a
result of the demands of
finals, many students consid
er staying awake by taking
prescriptions, such as stimu
lant-type drugs including
Adderall, Ritalin and
Concerta.
Erin English, health edu
cator at the University Health
Center, recognizes the preva
lence of abusing stimulant
drugs across college campus
es.
“Taking someone else’s
prescription is never a good
idea,” English said.
Side effects and certain
mixtures with other drugs
can be deadly.
And for students who
drink after the drug-induced
late-night hours, students
can become “two times as
impaired,” English said.
“The body is tired and
becomes more impaired and
at a greater risk for prob
lems,” English said.
Such impairments include
memory loss and driving
problems.
English said that whenev
er a stimulant, such as
Concerta or Vault, is mixed
with a depressant, like alco
hol, the stimulant can mask
the depressant.
“It tricks us,” thus allow
ing the person not to feel its
effects, she said.
But for students who want
to get through finals without
“tricks,” English recommends
healthier options.
“There are ways to manage
stress that are non-chemi
cal,” English said. “Manage it
in a healthy, natural way.”
Bender offers some
healthy options to get
through finals.
Students should stay away
from whole grains because
too many could cause a per
son to enter into a relaxed
state, Bender said.
She said students should
try to eat smaller meals
throughout the day to keep
energy levels up and focus
more on protein and fruits
and vegetables.

Univ provides rest, fun for finals
By JOE MASON
jmason@randb.com
Students may dread final
exams, but they can look for
ward to cookies and car
toons, courtesy of University
departments.
As the University prepares
for finals week, some depart
ments make special conces
sions for stressed students,
including cookie decorating
in the dining halls and a car
toon marathon in the
Student Learning Center.
Stress-relieving cookie
decorating will be available
in all of the dining halls
around lunch time on
Tuesday said J. Michael
Floyd, director of Food
Services.
Food Services will not
have special hours during
finals week because it
already has extensive serving
hours, he said.
He said the department
serves students all day, with
Snelling Dining Commons
open until midnight Monday
through Thursday.
Florence King, assistant
University librarian and
director of the SLC
Electronic Library, said the
food-friendly SLC is one
alternative for hungry stu
dents.
Food deliveries for stu
dents camped out to study in
the SLC become more fre
quent during finals week,
King said.
The SLC is now in 24-hour
mode and will continue oper
ating all day and night until
10:30 p.m. Thursday Dec. 14.
In past semesters, some
students have brought sleep
ing bags and pillows after
staking out a group study
room, said Shannon Bennett,
facility and security manager
at the SLC.
If students need a study
break, they will be able to
watch cartoons in room 368
of the SLC.
The Peabody Awards
Archives and the SLC are
jointly sponsoring
Toonapalooza — a marathon
of cartoons starting at 9 a.m.
Sunday and ending at 9 p.m.
or 10 p.m. Wednesday, said
Noel Holston, public rela
tions coordinator for the
Peabody Awards.
The marathon — which
will include “The Simpsons,”
“South Park” and “School
House Rock” clips, in addi
tion to others — is intended
to publicize the Peabody
Awards’ vast archive avail
able to students in the Main
Library, Holston said.
SLC staff will set up 20
additional tables in the
building, and events are not
scheduled in common areas
such as the north tower dur
ing finals week, Bennett said.
While in 24-hour mode,
outside security officers aug
ment the SLC’s security
staff. At night, two officers
from a private security com
pany join one regular
student security worker,
Bennett said.
The Main and Science
libraries — which stay open
until 2 a.m. — do not add
longer hours for finals week.
But based on statistics kept
during the SLC’s 24-hour
operation, the SLC meets
students’ late-night study
needs, King said.
But students must find
alternative modes of trans
portation for their late-night
study sessions.
Buses run less frequently
during finals week because
there is less movement
between classes, said Ron
Hamlin, campus transit man
ager.
No additional Physical
Plant staff — such as custodi
ans — are needed during
finals week because it is a
temporary occurrence, said
Ken Crowe, director of utili
ties for the Physical Plant.
But the department tries to
accommodate students.
“We try to be quiet,”
Crowe said. “We try not to
hammer or drill too loudly.”
