IM fields intact
after tailgating
By KELLY PROCTOR
kproctor@randb.com
The intramural fields will
likely will be used again next
football season as a parking
place for tailgaters’ cars.
“We anticipate we will be”
using the fields in Fall 2007,
subject to approval by the
Office for Student Affairs,
said George Stafford, associ
ate vice president for
Auxiliary and Administrative
Services.
Student Government
Association President Jamie
Peper said that in her meet
ings with Vice President of
the Office for Student Affairs
Rodney Bennett, he seemed
“quite pleased” with the pro
gram so far.
Bennett himself couldn’t
be reached for comment.
The parking program
debuted this Fall after a deci
sion in April to let fans park
on the intramural fields,
thereby keeping their cars off
sidewalks and cutting down
on traffic flow problems.
The program initially met
heavy resistance from stu
dents who feared their sports
fields would be littered on
and torn up.
But the students’ battle
lost steam after students
found minimal tailgating
trash.
“There was virtually no
damage, as we suspected,”
Stafford said, adding that the
parking area helps keep traf
fic patterns smooth after the
games.
Peper, who, with her SGA
colleagues, led the charge
against the fields’ use, said
she was happy with the
result.
“I haven’t gotten student
concerns about injuries” from
trash left on the fields, or
complaints from the intramu
ral teams, Peper said.
An SGA member visited
the fields after every game
and to sweep the fields for
trash after cleaning crews
were done, Peper said.

soccer at the Intramural
Fields Wednesday. An SGA
campaign to not use the
fields for gameday parking
lost momentum because
the fields haven’t been
damaged this semester.
“I am satisfied with the
way Student Affairs held their
word,” she said.
But if there are problems
next year, she said, SGA will
“reignite advocating against
it.”
Women’s swim motivated by loss
By MEGAN HARRISON

The Lady Bulldogs were less than a sec
ond away from a second straight National
Championship in March.
The top-ranked swim team went head-to-
head with Auburn for the National
Championship title and lost by the smallest
margin in the history of the meet — three
points or one race.
The three-day meet, held in Athens over
the University’s spring break, came down to
the final relay of the meet.
In order to win, Georgia had to beat
Arizona. If not, Auburn would take home to
title.
Georgia lost to Arizona by .61 seconds in
the 400 yard freestyle relay, giving Auburn
the National Championship.
Not all was sour, however, for the
Bulldogs, as the relay team of Tricia Harm,
Mary DeScenza, Jessica Cole and Kara Lynn
Joyce did what the Arizona team could not
by setting a new American record. Arizona
had three foreign swimmers, disqualifying
them from the American record.
In the race Joyce had the fastest split in
history.
Although two of the four relay members
graduation, the team retained the other two,
including Joyce, so the outlook is promising.
Georgia’s loss at Nationals was the only
one the women suffered all season.
“That was the hardest loss I have ever
had,” senior Haley Chura said. She added
that it was disappointing to lose to Auburn

by the closest of margins.
Nine months later, the team is working to
get back in position to win the champi
onship.
Chura said assistant coach Harvey
Humphries posted a Mark Twain quote on
his door that says, “It’s better to deserve
something and not be recognized for it than
to be honored for something that you do not
deserve.”
“That quote is so perfect,” Chura said.
The team is using the quote as motiva
tion, and it appears to be working early this
season. At their last meet, the Lady
Bulldogs beat five other teams at the
Georgia Invitational in the same waters
where they came up short for the champi
onship.
