Soldiers conducted house to-house searches through the densely populated grid of squat two- and three-story buildings but met no resist ance in a district firmly in the hands of the Mahdi Army mili tia led by the radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, said Lt. Col. David Oclander. Mqj. Gen. Man suspected of dismembering wife captured in Michigan snow MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. A man suspected of killing and dismembering his wife was captured Sunday as he fled from searchers through the snow in a wooded area of northern Michigan, police said. Stephen Grant had been the subject of a manhunt since police discovered what they believe to be the torso and other body parts of his wife, Tara Lynn Grant, in and around the couple's house in a suburb of Detroit. Grant was arrested in Bliss Township in northern Michigan, some 225 miles from his home, after an air and ground search by local, state and federal agencies, according to the Emmet County sheriff's department. Officials said he was not dressed for the weather with overnight temperatures in the area in the teens and 20s, and he did not strug gle. “He was not in the condi tion to run anymore or obvi ously to flee,” Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said. "There is no prob lem between the two sides, and we are trying to set up a small security center there.” Al-Sadr withdrew his mili tia under intense pressure from the government, but there were worries that a large-scale military push with out political clearance could bring a backlash and jeopard ize the entire security effort. "The indication that we are getting is a lot of the really bad folks have gone into hiding," Oclander said. Police said there had been U.S. military activity at the al- Jazair police station in Sadr City since Friday, where troops were thought to be converting the facility into a joint operations center. Cherokee take away 2,800 citizenships OKLAHOMA CITY The Cherokee Nation vote to revoke the citizenship of the descendants of people the Cherokee once owned as slaves was a blow to people who have relied on tribal ben efits. Charlene White, a descen dant of freed Cherokee slaves who were adopted into the tribe in 1866 under a treaty with the U.S. government, wondered Sunday where she would now go for the glauco ma treatment she has received at a tribal hospital in Stilwell. “I’ve got to go back to the doctor, but I don't know if I can go back to the clinic or if they’re going to oust me right now,” said White, 56, a disabled Tahlequah resi dent who lives on a fixed income. In Saturday’s special elec tion, more than 76 percent of voters decided to amend the Cherokee Nation's constitu tion to remove the estimated 2,800 freedmen descendants from the tribal rolls, accord ing to results posted Sunday on the tribe’s Web site. Police say the gang has compiled a "hit list” targeting five officers and a gang prose cutor —a sign of just how brazen Public Enemy has become. “They make police officers very, very nervous," said Cpl. Nate Booth, a gang detective with the Buena Park Police Department in Orange County. Law enforcement officials trace the gang’s rise to shifts in the power structure inside prisons. The Aryan Brotherhood has long been the dominant white supremacist gang behind bars with the Nazi Low Riders acting as its foot soldiers on the outside for drug dealing and identity theft. In 2000, officials reclassi fied the Low Riders as a prison-based gang and began sending its members to solitary confinement as soon as they were imprisoned. The crackdown hurt the gang's ability to interact with the Aryan Brotherhood, which turned to Public Enemy, authorities say. The alliance was cemented in 2005 when Donald Reed “Popeye” Mazza, an alleged leader of Public Enemy, was inducted into the Aryan Brotherhood. Gordon is quitting the civil rights organization, leaving after just 19 months at the helm, he told The Associated Press on Sunday. Gordon cited growing strain with board members over the group s manage ment and future operations. “I believe that any organi zation that’s going to be effective will only be effective if the board and the CEO are aligned and I don’t think we are aligned,” Gordon said. “This compromises the abili ty of the board to be as effective as it can be.” Gordon said he will give up his duties before month’s end. He spoke by phone from Los Angeles, where he had just attended the taping of the NAACP Image Awards. Dennis C. Hayes, general counsel of the Baltimore based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is expected to serve as interim presi dent, Gordon said. Hayes filled the same role after Kweisi Mfume resigned the presidency in 2004 after nine years. Gordon said that while the NAACP is an advocacy organization, it needs to be more focused on service and finding solutions. “I’m used to a CEO run ning an organization with the board approving strate gy and policy,” Gordon said. “But the NAACP board is very much involved." Gordon said he made the decision in recent weeks and told the board at its annual meeting in New York City in mid-February. Jackson charging $3,500 per minute TOKYO A relaxed-look ing Michael Jackson smiled and waved at screaming fans as he arrived in Japan on Sunday for his second visit in recent years to host an exclusive party and sponsor a fan art competition. Jackson made his first official foray back into the spotlight after his acquittal on child molestation charges in June 2005 with an appear ance in Tokyo to accept an MTV Japan award last year. Jackson, in trademark sunglasses and black leather jacket, was ushered by guards past hundreds of screaming Japanese fans at Narita Airport on Sunday afternoon, some carrying signs that read “We love DUI DEFENSE PHILLIP COMER GRIFFETH Trial Lawyer Former Prosecutor Felonies Misdemeanors Major credit cards accepted The Bottlcworks on Prince 297 Prince Avenue, Suite 24 706-549 4646 www.pcgriffeth.com forces only would conduct the search and if that they faced resistance, then U.S. forces could intervene,” he said. “But that was not the case with today’s operation.” Sadr City presents one of the most difficult steps in the sweeps that began Feb. 14. The Mahdi Army’s cooper ation is essential to keep the plan from derailing, but al- Sadr has complained about the heavy U.S. role in the raids and its inability to stop car bombs and other attacks blamed on Sunni insurgent groups. Earlier, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki spoke about the Baghdad security plan at a reconciliation conference of former army officers in Baghdad. “The law must prevail and all Iraqis must be equal in front it, regardless of their reli gious and ethnic background or political affiliation,” al- Maliki said. Kanye’s take-out to be trans-Atlantic LONDON lf Kanye West were to walk into the British dining room and order dinner, it would cost the rap per about $17.50. But since the restaurant is delivering from Wales to New York it’s going to cost a bit more. For a feast of onion bha jees, chapati breads, birya nis, pappadums. a specially prepared fish dish and veg etables on the side, the bill will top $3,900, plus travel and accommodation for the restaurant’s head chef. The meal was requested for West and seven guests by a music promotion company, the restaurant said Sunday. The company had previously ordered food from the restaurant near Cardiff, Wales, for an after-show party for a Snoop Dogg con cert in London. But this is different. Normally, they don’t deliver outside a 3-mile radius of the restaurant, which is about 150 miles west of London. The meal will be pre pared, cooled, shrink wrapped and packed in dry ice in the British Raj's kitchens and— along with head chef Kaysor Ahmed will be helicoptered from Wales to London’s Heathrow Airport on Tuesday.
