Scientists discuss biofuel By ALEXIS GARROBO agarrobodii’yahoo.com The aura of tension between the economics and science of alternative fuel usage was present at the University’s international symposium. Scientists from around the world gathered Friday and Saturday at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education to discuss the alternative fuel uses of anaer obes organisms that can live without oxygen. A University professor com pared the oil crisis in the 1970s to the current oil situation. “It is a similar situation we’re in today,” professor of microbiology Juergen K.W. Wiegle said. “But in the ’7os we didn’t have genomics.” Wiegel said in the past 30 years, there have not been sig nificant changes to the energy industry, but it does not mean science has not advanced. He cited an absence of pressure on politics, economy and industry by scientists as the reason for the lack The following incidents were taken from Athens- Clarke County and University Police reports: Feb. 26 ► A US. Postal Inspector in Phoenix, Ariz. contacted University Police about fraud ulent IDs being shipped from the University to students at other colleges. University Police still are investigating the situation, have not released any sus pects and could not comment on the type of fraudulent IDs being made, University Lt. Lisa Boone said. March 1 ► A female University stu dent told police at 1:05 a m. a man she knows tried to con tact her after being asked not to. grabbed her and attempted to enter her room without per mission. Many of the presentations over the two-day symposium focused on the possibility of using anaerobes as blofriel and their mechanics of the conversion to fuel sources. Bioftiel converts renewable sources of energy like trees, grasses or hay into alternative sources of energy Speaker Michael Cassidy of the Georgia Research Alliance said there is a possibility for economic growth through “strategic investment in research at universities.” Cassidy pointed out that Georgia ranks seventh in the number of biotechnology companies in the country, and the University has a strong agricultural biotechnology program. The opening talks conclud ed with the research engineer for Southern Company, Tom Johnson, explaining a few of the research and development programs the electric utility company has undertaken. The employee found the wallet on the sidewalk of College Avenue and turned it in to University Police on Feb. 28 The wallet contained an expired Georgia drivers license and two fraudulent Georgia driver’s licenses. All the licenses had a pic ture of the same female, which police later identified as Lindsay Faye Oberst, a contributor for The Red & Black. After investigating the situation. As far as alternative fuels, “biomass is our best option," Johnson said. When asked if using biomass such as grasses for fUel is viable in the long term. Johnson said it was not a solution. During the question-and answer session, Johnson said Southern Company would be looking at biodiesel, not bioethanol. The symposium was held in honor of Lars G. Ljungdahl, the retiring academic director of biochemistry and molecular biology. Ljungdahl has worked at the University for more than 40 years and recently celebrat ed his 80th birthday. The symposium was spon sored by the University, U.S. Department of Energy and New England Biolabs Inc. Contributions to the con ference will be published in the Annals of New York Academy of Sciences. March 2 ► University Police arrest ed three University students in the Pi Kappa Alpha parking lot and charged them each with underage possession among other charges. An officer observed several individuals having a verbal altercation in the Chi Psi lot at 2:39 a.m and then “get involved in a scuffle” in the Pi Kappa Alpha lot. After making contact with the individuals, the officer smelled a strong odor of alco hol on them and determined they were all underage. The three men told the officer they had been drinking downtown earlier that night. Richard W. Hill and James Charles Meyer were arrested and charged with underage possession and possession of fraudulent identification Michael Stephen Brown Jr. was arrested and charged with underage possession.
