It was the largest bombing in the capital in three days, and came on the heels of a major push by nearly 1,200 US. and Iraqi troops into Sadr City, a Shiite militia stronghold and base for fight ers loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr Iraqi troops in Sadr City set up checkpoints and took a far more visible presence than Americans, who led the push into the area Sunday. The move was an apparent attempt to avoid Shiite anger in a place of past street bat tles with U S. forces. Police arrest three at Wash, war protest TACOMA, Wash. Policy arrested three people early Monday during a protest of Iraq-bound Army vehicles at a Washington state port. Several dozen people showed up at the Port of Tacoma to protest the ship ment of Stryker vehicles and other equipment from Fort Lewis. Caitlin Esworthy, Walter Cuddeford and Jeffery Berryhill were arrested for investigation of assault. Zoltan Grossman, a geog raphy professor at Evergreen State College in Olympia who was observing the protest, said he didn't know what prompted the arrests. Esworthy is an Evergreen State student, and Cuddeford is a Navy veteran, he said. "There were no rocks, no m The Wire weapons. People were not carrying anything but signs,” Grossman said. "We were on public space, on gravel, and there was a white line that police had told us not to cross. I didn’t see any of the protesters cross that line.” lawmakers examine militaiy health care WASHINGTON Substandard living condi tions found at the Army’s flagship veterans hospital likely exist throughout the military health care system, the head of a House panel investigating Walter Reed Army Medical Center said Monday. "We need a sustained focus here, and much more needs to be done,” Rep. John Tierney said of a scandal enveloping Walter Reed. Charges of bureaucratic delays and poor treatment there have produced calls in Congress for quick reform Tierney said he is afraid “these problems go well beyond the walls of Walter Reed,” adding that "as we send more and more troops into Iraq and Afghanistan, these problems are only going to get worse, not bet ter.” Sherriff: Kids home when mother killed PETOSKEY, Mich.
