Lace up your skates
Classic fun in
the Classic City

“Hallelujah, here she comes,
Queen Rollerball!”
Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits
was pretty taken with a roller
girl in 1980, and almost three
decades later, the sport hasn’t
lost its charm. An American
entertainment staple since the
early lSjyjg, roller derby culture
has maint*|ed its edge and its
occult following with grace and
dignity.
The Classic City Rollergirls
are now seeking able-bodied
women 18 and up to attend roll
er derby “boot camp” tonight in
preparation for league try-outs
on Jan. 24. Warning: not for the
faint of heart, or the mild of
manners.
Mandy Blalock, also known
as “Nell Bomb,” is the group’s
head of recruitment. “There’s

four blockers and one jammer
on each team. The object is for
the jammer to get through the
pack, and the blockers are try
ing to prevent the jammer from
the other team getting through
the pack. Every time the jammer
goes through the pack, they
score a point for each member of
the opposite team that they
pass,” Blalock said.
If this sounds physically
demanding, it’s because it is.
“You will be expected to take a
full-blown hit and stand back
up,” Blalock said.
For those who aren’t world
champion roller skaters but still
want to try their hand at derby,
no worries. Blalock said only ele-

“The new place
will make it easier for
bands to get in and
play.”
But the emotions
still gravitate to the
old station’s funky
spirit, making the
farewell difficult.
For some, if not
many, WUOG is not
just a radio station,
it’s a daily fix.
As Kennedy, also
a member of the
WUOG team said, “If
WUOG was an exfoli
ating wash, I would
be cleansed with it
every day.”
To the new rota

after Christmas, nor

There was a stir of
disappointment and
confusion when
Thursday and Friday

nothing but static
and uncertainty.
Fortunately, it has
been confirmed —■
WUOG will be back
on the air today with
anew locale and a
fresh start.

Basic things like that.”
Four-day Tasty World event hosts 20 bands
By CHRISTINA KHOURI
The Red & Black
The party will begin
on Monday and contin
ue through Thursday
at Tasty World.
It’s mentioned here
and there but to most
it is a complete mys
tery, a mystery that is
only fully understood
by the nearly-impossi
ble-to-reach Mercer
West.
It is The Real Tasty
World, a four-night
music festival that
West, local free-show
legend, has put togeth
er. Every night at 10
p.m. four bands will
play, as well as one sur
prise guest. Altogether,
20 bands are scheduled
to play.
Staying true to his
Jammy Jams and other
free-show roots, West
is allowing for no cover
charge for the event.
Free refreshments and
Party Party Partners’
CD-R compilations will
be provided.

Not only do Classic City
Rollergirls kick some serious
skating rink butt, but it’s all for
a good cause.
“We do a lot of outreach in
the community,” Blalock said.
Many of the bands
that are listed to play,
such as Daffodil, The
Matt Kurz One and
others will be releasing
CDs. Also, Puddin’
Tang and Horse Party
will be performing their
first shows at The Real
Tasty World.
When asked why
they took up West’s
invitation to play at the
free event, band
Pegasuses-XL said,
“He’s a weird, dynamic
guy who demonstrates
no small amount of
love for people, and
that alone is worth sup
porting.”
The ever-busy West
acquired the position
of partner to Murphy
Wolford, owner and
booking agent of Tasty
World.
“I sent an ad out for
a booking agent a few
months ago, and he got
the job, and there has
been an overwhelming
and positive response,”
Wolford said.
Essentially, West’s

bash.
“It’s kind of like a
four-day coming out
party for him as a book
ing agent,” Wolford
said.
But Tasty World
may not be able to con
tinue to hold free
shows.
“It depends on if it
is cost effective. If we
can make it up in the
bar, then yeah, maybe
we will do it a few
nights a month or once
a week. In this econo
my it is not a bad idea,
and Mercer is good at
getting donations,”
Molford said.
Along with the pos
sibility of more free
shows, Tasty World will
probably be holding
shows for more local,
Athens-based bands.
Wolford said West will
be responsible for that
change.
“Tasty World has no
problem getting tour
ing bands,” Wolford
said. “And Mercer has a
lot of local band expe
rience and connections,
which is what Tasty
World needs right
now.”
The show is sure to
be fun, but attendees
beware West’s shows
are notorious for devi
ating from the original
agenda.
West told Flagpole a
few of the bands he
scheduled to play were
not even aware of the
festival, much less that
they were to play in it.
Either way, leave the
wallet at home, and get
ready for a full out,
four-night extravagan
za.
