Midterms, the end of the
semester and finals are the
busiest parts of the year for
the Office of Student
Academic Services, which
handles reports of academic
dishonesty, according to offi
cials in the department.
When applying to the
University, every student
agrees to the Student Honor
Code in A Culture of Honesty:
“I will be academically hon
est in all of my academic
work and will not tolerate
academic dishonesty of oth
ers.”
But during the 2009-2010
academic year, there were
reports of 337 students com
mitting academic dishonesty,
according to an academic
honesty report for the year.
Deborah Bell, coordinator
for student academic hones
ty, said cheaters are usually
caught by instructors who
notice inconsistencies in the
student’s work, such as an
essay dramatically different
from ones previously submit
ted by the student.
“They think there’s some
thing out of ordinary for the
student,” she said.
For instances of unauthor
ized aid on an assignment or
test, instructors will see simi
lar answers and misspellings
on multiple students’ work,
BeU said.
Once reported, the instruc
tor and student must discuss
the violation with a

Editor's note: What is a night in Athens
like? The Red & Black took to the
streets to find out, recording the sights
and sounds of an Athens evening. We
continue with reports from a liquor
store after dark.
It’s the Friday night before the
Georgia versus Georgia Tech football
game. Thousands of Bulldog fans, stu
dents and Athens families are on the
highways, headed back to the Classic
City from a Thanksgiving break.
Though plenty of people are boost
ing the economy downtown, there is a
steady stream of Athenians coming in

praise for Bobo, not ridicule. Never
