News Service) VATICAN CITY, — His Emi nence Samuel Cardinal Stritch, Archbishop of Chicago, has been named Pro-Prefect of the Sac red Congregation for the Propa gation of the Faith in Rome by His Holiness Pope Pius XII. The Chicago prelate will be the first U. S. bom prelate ever to serve as a Cardinal of the Roman Curia, the special com missions of Cardinals who dis patch the administrative busi ness of the Church. (In Chicago Cardinal Stritch issued a statement in which he said: “It is clear that His Holi ness, in honoring me, principally had in mind honoring the Church in the United States.”) ALL YOUR MUSIC NEEDS # Records Hi-Fi Players t^atland A of Wusic JL 103 E. Court House Square DECATUR PHONE DR. 2-1708 The congregation of which the Cardinal will be pro-prefect was established by Pope Greg ory XV in 1622. It deals with all matters relating to Catholic mis sions throughout the world. It also has jurisdiction over areas in which the organizational struc ture of the Church is still rela tively undeveloped. The appointment of an Ameri can Cardinal to pro-prefect the congregation came just 50 years after the Church in the United States was removed from mis sionary status and the congre gation’s jurisdiction. On Novem ber 3, 1908, under the Apostolic Constitution “Sapienti Concilio,” the American Church came of age. To fill his new post Cardinal Stritch will have to leave Chi cago and come to Rome. Here he will be associated with His Eminence Pietro Card inal Fumasoni Biondi, 86-year- old Prefect of the Congregation of the Propagation of the Faith and former Apostolic Delegate to the United States. Although Cardinal Fumasoni Biondi, who suffers from poor eye-sight, re mains as the congregation’s pre fect, it is believed that Cardinal Stritch will direct the greater part of its affairs. The news of Cardinal Stritch’s appointment was unexpected and a “pleasant surprise,” ac cording to Vatican circles. One official of the Curia hailed the appointment as “magnificent and surprising news.” As Pro-Prefect Cardinal Stritch will serve an organiza- tion responsible for 31,894,515 Catholics and 3,218,724 cate chumens in mission areas. The only non-Italians to hold so high a rank were Cardinal Wil lem Van Rossum of the Nether lands, who preceded Cardinal Fumasoni Biondi as prefect, and Polish Cardinal Mielceslaw Led- ochowski, who served from 1892 to 1902.
