Renovations
Nearly Complete
SAVANNAH — Building and
renovation are almost completed
on the Carmelite Monastery lo
cated at Coffee Bluff in Sav
annah. The monastery, formerly
a large private estate, will be
the home of seven Discalced
Carmelite Nuns who will arrive
when construction has ended.
Open house will be held in
May upon completion of the
monastery and the public will
be invited to tour the premises
and will be given a glimpse into
the life of the Carmelite Nuns,
The Sisters will live a com
pletely cloistered life of prayer,
morti fication, contemplation
and work. They will make altar
breads to be used in the Mass,
as well as the sacred vestments
used in Liturgical Functions.
The Discalced Carmelite Nuns
are perhaps best known to
American Catholics through St.
Therese of Lisieux, a young
Carmelite Nun who died in
1897 and was shortly thereafter
raised to the honors of the altar
as St. Therese of the Child
Jesus, familiarly known as
“The Little Flower.” It is
thought-that the parents of St.
Therese will also be named
among the ranks of the Saints.
