Convention At Augusta April 19 & 20 Will Erect Grotto to Our Lady of Lourdes PORT WENTWORTH — Our Lady - of Lourdes Church will erect an outdoor grotto in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes, it was announced by Father Francis Donohue, administrator of the parish. The grotto will be con structed by the men of the par ish, members of “Our Lady of Lourdes Mens’ Association.” Preliminary work has already begun, announced Mr. William Sullivan, .president of the men’s association. “A great deal of the materials necessary for the con struction have .already been se cured,” he said, “through the zeal, time and effort of our membership a n d through the generosity of benefactors and well-wishers/’ “This grotto will be an exter nal and public manifestation of the love of our people for Our Lady of Lourdes, and as far as we know it will be the only wayside shrine of its type in the Diocese,” said Father Dono hue. The grotto will be located on the south side of the church just off U. S. Route 17. Recollection Day For Columbus Deanery Priests COLUMBUS — A day of re collection for the priests of the Columbus Deanery was held at St. Teresa’s Church in Albany on April 15. The Days program was carried out under the direction of the Rev. Herman Deimel, pastor of Holy Family, Columbus and Vicar Forane of the Columbus Deanery. Armstrong Priest-Son Celebrates Mass On Parents 7 $0th Anniversary AUGUSTA — The Bon Air Hotel will be convention head quarters this weekend for the nineteenth annual Convention of the Savannah Deanery Coun cil of Catholic Women. Also meeting in Augusta will be Youth from all parts of the Diocese gathering for the Sec ond Annual Diocesan Youth Conference. This conference is being sponsored by the Deanery Council of Catholic Women. Registration for the Diocesan Convention will begin at noon on Saturday, with the opening ses sion scheduled for 2:30 p. m. Following the first session will be a workshop on Organization and Development, and Public Relations. Father Francis Don ohue, Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, in Port Went worth, and Editor of the Dio cese of Savannah Edition of THE BULLETIN, will serve as moderator for this workshop. Mr. Pat Rice Mulherin, Miss Mary Sullivan, Mrs. L. J. Ward and Mrs. Ernest Dinkins are the participants on this program. Mr. James T. Vocelle, promi nent Catholic layman, and chairman of the Florida Indus trial Commission, will be the principal speaker at the ban quet, in the Crystal Room, Sat urday evening. “The Catholics’ PRAYERS REQUESTED SAVANNAH — The prayers of the faithful 'of the Diocese of Savannah are requested for the happy repose of the soul of the Rev. Bernard Zellers, C. S. V. Father at one time served as Director of the St. Thomas Home for Boys. Father Zellers died of a heart attack in Chicago, March 24th. AUGUSTA—The Rev. Gerald Armstrong, S.J., was celebrant of a Solemn High Mass on the occasion of the GOth wedding an niversary of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John L. Armstrong. The Most Rev. Thomas J. Mc Donough, D.D., J.C.D., auxili ary-bishop presided at the Mass and delivered the sermon. Officers of the mass which was held at Sacred Heart Church on April 12th, in addi tion to Father Armstrong, were Father Ralph Seikel as Deacon and Father Nicholas Quinlan as Sub-Deacon. Master of Cere monies was Robert Farley. Serving the Mass were four of Role in a Changing World” is the title of Mr. Vocelle’s ad dress. Though Mr. Vocelle now re sides in Tallahassee, Florida, GEORGIA is proud to claim him as a native son. He was born in St. Mary’s, Georgia, is a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, and Atlanta Law School, and was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1916. At the age of twen ty-three, he was elected to, the Georgia Legislature and served two years. He moved to Vero Beach, Fla., in 1924, and was first County Attorney of Indian River Coun ty upon its creation in 1925. He held the office of City Attorney at Vero Beach for four years. Mr. Vocelle has served in many capacities, in the state of Flori da, under several administra tions. He was appointed by Gov ernor Holland, on competitive merit examination, to serve on the first Parole Commission of Florida in 1941. He was appoint ed State Beverage Director by Governor Millard F. Caldwell, and Governor Dan McCarty ap pointed him Chairman of the Florida Industrial Commission in 1953, and he is currently serv ing, in this office, under the ad ministration of Governor LeRoy HH NEW MONASTERY—Renovations are nearing completion on the new Carmelite Monastery located at Coffee Bluff, Savannah. Immediately following the (Continued on Page Eight) Monastery Renovations Nearly Complete SAVANNAH — Building and renovation are almost completed on the Carmelite Monastery lo cated at Coffee Bluff in Sav annah. The monastery, formerly a large private estate, will be the home of seven Discalced Carmelite Nuns who will arrive when construction has ended. Open house will be held in May upon completion of the monastery and the public will be invited to tour the premises and will be given a glimpse into the life of the Carmelite Nuns, The Sisters will live a com pletely cloistered life of prayer, morti fication, contemplation and work. They will make altar breads to be used in the Mass, as well as the sacred vestments used in Liturgical Functions. The Discalced Carmelite Nuns are perhaps best known to American Catholics through St. Therese of Lisieux, a young Carmelite Nun who died in 1897 and was shortly thereafter raised to the honors of the altar as St. Therese of the Child Jesus, familiarly known as “The Little Flower.” It is thought-that the parents of St. Therese will also be named among the ranks of the Saints. Discuss Youth Councils Msgr. Joseph Scheider Speaker At Conferences SAVANNAH — At recent Clergy Conferences held in the Diocese of Savannah, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Joseph Scheider address- MSGR. SCHEIDER eel the attending priests on Catholic Youth Councils on a Parish level. Monsignor Schei der spoke at the request of Bishop McDonough, who has di rected that every parish inaug urate a youth program geared to the high school boys and girls. Monsignor Scheider is Na tional Director of the Youth De partment of the National Cath olic Welfare Conference. Priests were briefed on the organiza tion and aims of the Catholic Youth Councils.- It was noted that at the na tional Convention of Catholic Youth Councils held in Phila delphia last fall, 18,000 dele gates and observers received Holy Communion, With 150 priests assisting at distribution during the Mass. Monsignor Scheider cited the rapid growth of Catholic Youth Councils in Dioceses comparable in size and number to the Diocese of Sav annah, in assuring the priests of the workability of a youth program based on the Council type organization. The conferences were held in Savannah for the Priests of the Savannah and Augusta Dean eries and at Albany for the Priests of the Columbus Dean ery. The program was under the direction of Rev. Herbert Wellmeier, Diocesan Youth Di rector and closed with an ad dress by His Excellency, Bish op McDonough. Georgia Medical Ass’n Award ^ For Or. Francis X. Mulherin AUGUSTA — Dr. Francis Xavier Mulherin, a veteran of 43 years of practice, has been nominated by the Richmond County Medical Society for the coveted General Practitioner of the Year award, made annually by the Medical Assn, of Georgia. The award will be made at the Georgia group’s convention in Macon April 30- May 3. Son of the late William A. Mulherin and Mary Ann Roche Mulherin, the nominee began practice here in 1915 with his brother, the late Dr. William A. Mulherin, a prominent pediatri cian and a past president of the MOST REV. For the Saturday afternoon session of the Youth Confer ence, Rev. Ralph E. Seikel has arranged a panel discussion in which four boys and girls from Augusta will give their opin ions on several interesting top ics. Father Seikel will serve as Moderator and the floor will be open for discussion after the panelists have given their talks. The Diocesan C.C.W. and the youth attending the youth con ference will attend 8:0-9 a. m. Mass, on Sunday, at St. Marys’- on-the-Hill. The Most Rev. Thos. J. McDonough, D.D., J.C.D., Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Savannah, will be the celebrant of the convention Mass. Right Reverend Monsignor Patrick J. O’Connor, Pastor of the Diocesan Shrine of the Im maculate Conception, in Atlan ta, will be the principal speak er at the Savannah Youth Con ference, Sunday at the Bon Air Hotel. The election of officers will be held at the morning session of the Deanery C.C.W. This ses sion will begin at 10:30 a. m. Mrs. Robert H. Mahoney will be the principal speaker at the luncheon. “Our Lady of Good Counsel” is the title that the National President has chosen for her talk. Mrs. Mahoney, of Hartsford, JAMES T. VOCELLE GUEST SPEAKER Connecticut, has twenty-six years of know-how and experi ence behind her busy job of directing a lay leadership pro gram for nine million women. In 1931, the National Council of Catholic Women invited Mary Louise Hannan to address a banquet. There was good rea son for choosing Mary Hannan to speak to the women. Though a young woman, she held a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Trinity College, as well as a doctorate from the Catholic University of America. She was an instructor in Latin and Greek at Trinity College and an active leader in Kappa Gam ma Pi. She had much to offer the women and was interested in their work. In 1933 Mary Hannan was married in the Trinity College Chapel to Robert H. Mahoney. Together, they toured Italy, France, England and Ireland. Mr. Mahoney, now Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Hartford, takes a keen interset in his wife's Council work. Mrs. Mahoney has held many offices in religious and civic or ganizations. Some of them are as follows: National Treasurer of Kappa Gamma Pi, member of Governor’s Fact-Finding Com mittee on Education, 1948-1950, and president for two years of Connecticut Conference on So cial Work. TOOMEY SPIRITUAL MODERATOR Holy Family Student Places In Spelling Bee COLUMBUS — Third place i the Muscogee County Spellir Bee was won by Rosemary Brennan, eighth grade student of Holy Family School, Co lumbus. Rose mary is the d a u g hter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. 3523 Trinity Drive. This year Holy Family School for the first time participated in the Muscoge County Spelling Bee, which is sponsored by rhs Atlanta Journal in conjunct urn with the Annual National Spoil ing Bee. Thirty-six schools eo ° represented in this contest. Dr. Mulherin, is a life mem ber of the Richmond County Medical Society; member of the Medical Assn, of Georgia, Amer ican Medical Assn., Alpha Kappa Kappa Medical fraternity and of St. Marys’ Church. In 1913, he married Miss Eulalia Fueger of Savannah and they have eight children, two of whom are physicians. They are Frank X. Mulherin Jr., Richard W. Mulherin, Dr Joseph L. Mulherin, Dr. C. Stephen Mulherin, Mrs. Charles Thebaud all of Augusta; Mrs. Polk S. Land, of Columbus, Ga. and Mrs. Owen M. Owens of California. NEW CHANCERY BUILDING—Work is progressing on the new Diocese of Savannah Ch eery Building, now being constructed at Abercorn and McDonough Streets. Plans call ior com pletion of the new office building by the Fall of the year.
