The proudest men here are
volunteers who serve Our Lady

explained a white-haired gen
tleman wearing the leather
straps of a stretcher-bearer.
At home he is Col. Charles
Henry Stennett-R,edman, a doc
tor with a good practice in Man
chester, England. At Lourdes he
is a “brancardier” or stretcher-
bearer who works 12 hours a
day and pays for his own room
and board.
“I’ve been coming here for
more than 20 years, I guess,” the
75-year-old physician said. “I
can’t remember just when I
started coming, but I first came
with a medical group and I’ve
been coming back ever since,
except during the war, of course.
“I’m only here for a week this
time, but maybe I’ll be back
later in the year.
“I work mostly in the baths,
helping out there, checking pa
tients’ conditions and getting
them in and out of the water.”

men and soldiers — each day

“We have, to be at the hos
pital to pick up our people in
time to take them to the 7 o’
clock Mass at the grotto,” the
doctor said. What he didn’t
say was that most of the stretch
er-bearers get up a good deal
earlier to go to Mass and Com
munion themselves so they can
be free to help their charges at
the “Sick Mass” at the grotto.
In the early morning hours,
the narrow streets of Lourdes
are filled with caravans of the
sick. Curiously enough, stretch
ers are no longer generally in
use and the shoulder straps are
more symbolic than useful.
The brancardiers form a chain
of sick on rubber-tired wheel
chairs covered with convertible
canvas tops. With one hand they
push the chair in front of them
and with the other hand they
pull another from behind.
Whenever they travel with the
sick both the sufferers and their
helpers recite the Rosary out
loud.
After the “Sick Mass” at the
grotto the sick are taken to the
Lourdes shelter, where they are
served breakfast, out-of-doors
when it is nice and inside when
it is too cold or raining. The
rest of the braneardier’s day is
devoted to taking the sick to
the hospital, to examination
rooms, to the grotto, to the
baths and to other portions of
the spacious wooden sanctuary
for religious services.
At night, in good weather, the
sick are sometimes brought to
the shrine for other ceremonies,
including candlelight proces
sions.
As a physician, Dr. Stennett-
Redman has long served on the
medical examination board of
the grotto that investigates the
patients who come in hope of a
miraculous cure.
“What a lot of people don’t
understand,” he said, “is that
we don’t pronounce on miracles
here.”
“When a patient comes here,
we want to see him. He has to
bring a full medical history
with him from his hometown
doctors. We thoroughly examine
those who come, and strictly
from a medical point of view.
“We rule out all mental cases,
neurotics and the like who
might be cured by something
like suggestion or the clearing
of an emotional block.
“Any doctor can sit in one of
the examinations. We had a
Jewish doctor last year and I
remember hearing about a Hin
du doctor some time back.
“The medical bureau here is
only a fact gathering group. We
collect information about the
people who come. If someone is
cured, we see him again. We
look into the case and we draw
up a report on our findings.
“This report does not decide
on the miracle. It is forwarded
to Paris, where there is a medi
cal commission which examines
the case again. The ecclesias
tical commission also looks the
report over and it is only after
they have looked the matter
over that any decision is made.
“All we can do here is to
determine if a case is inoper
able or incurable and if there
has been a significant change at
all.”
While thousands of “cures”
are recorded in the archives of
the medical bureau as scien
tifically unaccountable, only 54
cures have been recognized as
miraculous by the Church in
the shrine’s 100 years of exist
ence.
