Parents, Educators Can Assure Beneficial Use Of Television mara officiating. O O Headed Nation’s First Parish THE BULLETIN, May 3, 1958—PAGE 3 MULHERIN-RINKER O- -O (N.C.W.C. News Service) FRIBOURG, Switzerland, — Television will be a boon to the child if parents and teachers cooperate to assure its use as an educational means, an interna tional Catholic radio and TV group declared here. A “Code for the Educational Use of Television’’ was issued here by the Radio-Television and Childhood Committee of the International Catholic Associa tion for Radio and Television (UNDA). The code was part of a statement released here en titled “TV: An Open Window on the World.” It was prepared in compliance with a resolution adopted by the general assembly of UNDA held in Geneva, Swit zerland, last October. In a prefatory statement, the committee warned against tak ing too literally the frequent assertion that TV brings the world into the home. It pointed out that certain dangerous atti tudes can result from confusing the world on the screen with the real world. “TV does not take the place of the world,” it said, “and the TV world must never take the place of the world that one can touch, see, smell — where one can suffer.” The code . says that parents should not expose children to TV at too early an age. The proper age should be determin ed by the child’s mental devel- ; opment rather than his chrono- ' logical age. Such physiological ( factors as the adjustment of the 1 child’s eyes, and such psycho-. logical factors as his -ability t(l / interpret images and to concern® trate long enough to grasp the continuity of an action, should be taken into consideration, it explains. The code says that, at the be ginning, children should not be permitted to watch television alone. They need parents to give them a feeling of security and to help them interpret ex periences given by TV in terms of their own consciousness. Fur thermore, it says that parents should be selective in their choice of TV programs to suit the nature of the family audi ence. The code also asks parents to take into consideration certain physical factors when permitting their children to watch TV. It points out that many children sit too close to the set and in that way endanger their eyes. It suggests that healthy posture while viewing shows should be encouraged and that the place ment of the set should be plan ned to provide comfort and healthy sitting positions for young children. The code says that the time devoted to TV viewing should be limited, that outdoor activi ties should be encouraged for the sake of well-rounded de velopment of the child, and that late-hour viewing should not be permitted. Television during meals should not be encouraged, according to the code. TV should be a positive factor in family life and should not interfere with a time generally given to an exchange of ideas among the members of the family and oth er important conversations. Radiological Research Must Be Directed To Welfare Of Man, Pope Tells Scientists Movie Trend Glamorizing Nonconformists SEATTLE, Wash., (NC)—The current Hollywood trend is to make a hero out of the rebell ious nonconformist at the ex pense of the good and happy man, William H. Mooring, Hol lywood columnist for some 50 Catholic newspapers, said here. Mr. Mooring explained that from the movie maker’s point of view “it is so difficult to be at tractive when you’re good and happy — but when you become wild and foam at the mouth, then you become a likely Holly wood character.” The fad in today’s films, he declared in a lecture at Seattle University here, is to glorify nonconformity for nonconform ity’s sake. As a case in point, Mr. Moor ing offered the film version of the controversial book “The Nun’s Story.” He said the signs are that the movie will depict the principal character as a reb el and outcast, rather than as one who recognizes she made a mistake in entering religious life. (Radio, NCWC News Service) VATICAN CITY, — Scientific research must aim at “increas ing the spiritual energies of the human being and freeing him from bodily and material labor,” His Holiness Pope Pius XII told medical scientists in the field of radiation research. In an address to participants in an international symposium on radiological and nuclear medicine, the Pontiff stressed the need to pinpoint the effects of radiation on the body. Prais ing the research work being conducted, he asked: “Where would this patient and most tiring labor in scientific centers lead if (it were) not (di rected) to gain the gradual lib eration of man, the suppression of physical and moral obstacles, and the judicious use of his con served or regained energy?” The Pope’s talk recalled his 1955 Easter message, in which he warned of “the horrors of .monstrous offspring, and worse still, the hidden shocks caused to parental genes” that can re sult from increased radioactivi ty. The Pope concludes his cur rent message, however, by in viting the scientists to share in the triumph of Christ’s Resur rection. Reminding them of St. Paul’s words in his letter to the Romans that “he who raised Jesus Christ from the dead will also bring to life your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who deals in you,” the Pope told the researchers they would “find comfort” in the “clear cer tainty” of the triumph of Christ at Easter. In his address,, given in French, the Pope noted the great development of radiology in medicine and industry in re cent years. He cited the need for measuring “with exact in tensity the biological effects . . . and above all the spectacular ef fects of the nuclear weapons which are constantly before men’s minds today.” The research now being con ducted, the Pope said, “is fully justified by the importance if its goal, namely . . . human life which depends on the adequate utilization of radiotherapy.” “It is no small or insignificant thing when one concerns him self with the interests of human life,” he continued. “We must always recognize where the true greatness (of research) lies and only apply the immense re- C & S REALTY COMPANY “Specialists in Commercial- Industrial Real Estate” 604 Mortgage Guarantee Building JA. 4-2053 Warehouses, Stores, Mfg. Insurance sources of modern technology for the purpose of increasing the spiritual energies of the hu man beings and freeing him from bodily and material la bor.” In the course of his talk, the Pope said: “The extensive use of medi cal radiology and the use of ra diation in biology and in in dustry render increasingly im portant the need for measuring accurately (their) intensity and biological effects. Everyone, in fact, is aware of the dangers they can represent for the hu man body, of the example of the radiologists who have been vic tims of it and, above all, of the spectacular effects of the nu clear weapons which are con stantly before-the minds of men today. “You yourselves, in one of your reports, point out the un favorable effects they usually have on reproductive cells. This obviously engenders the need to measure as accurately as possi ble the intensity of this radia tion and its various applications. “But here you encounter two kinds of problems: one of a con ceptual nature and the other of a practical nature. It is first of all a question of the concept it self of ‘radiation doses,’ which, as you recall, has undergone a slow evolution in the course of the past 50 years. For the pur pose of meeting the exigencies of greater precision, a distinc tion had to be made between the ‘dose of exposure’ and the ‘dose of absorption’ or the ‘energizing dose’ and, consequently, there were established different units (of measurement) for each one: the roentgen and the rad. “The question has not in fact been exhausted, and at this symposium you are discussing the characteristics of other units and their usefulness, among other things, in protecting the population against harmful ra diations.” HEADS MISSIONERS—New Father Superior General of the Divine Word Missionaries is Very Rev.
