PIUS XII WARNS WORKERS
MATERIALISTIC ATTEMPT TO
ESTABLISH SOCIAL CONCORD
(Radio, N.C.W.C. News Service)
VATICAN CITY, — His Holi
ness Pope Pius XII has warned
Italian workers that a material
istic attempt to create social
peace-without Christ would ulti
mately lead to suppression of
their freedoms.
The Pop£ spoke to 20,000
Italian Catholic laborers assem
bled in St. Peter’s basilica on
the third anniversary of the
proclamation of May Day as the
feast of St. Joseph the Worker.
At the same time about 15,000
communist workers staged a
mass rally in the Piazza del
Popolo — People’s square —
about a mile away and across
the river from the basilica, to
hear a denunciation of capital
ism and of American missiles.
Speaking in Italian, the Pon
tiff stated that Catholic social
doctrine is in great part re
sponsible for the progress
achieved in Italy during the
past century, and hailed the

present-day world of labor as
the fulfillment of the dream of
Pope Leo XIII, “the immortal
pioneer of social order.”
Pope Pius XII noted that what
has been accomplished for the
working man could never have
been hoped for 100 years ago,
and that the Christian feast of
labor on May 1 has now become
a day of victory.
“Who would ever have dared
to imagine 100 years ago,” he
said, “that there would be so
many nations in the world
where the working class would
be recognized . . . and enjoy a
just equality of rights and equal
dignity with other classes?
“Who would ever have dared
to think, 70 years or more ago,
when Labor Day on May 1 was
first instituted . . . that it would
so soon have assumed the sig
nificance of a feast and a vic
tory whose celebration would
be associated with the (Italian)
nation, and that the Church, for
having contributed to the prep
aration of that victory with con
stant and enlightened works,
would have been declared that
(the Church) of the Christian
workers?
The Pontiff continued by say
ing that there was a time when
certain men considered them
selves the exclusive arbiters of
the future of workers’ world.
They tried by every means to
separate the workers from the
teachings of Christ and of the
Church.
But today, he noted, groups of
laborers gather before the Pope
and solemnize the feast of St.
Joseph the Worker.
The time has arrived, he said,
which “would have gladdened
the magnanimous and farsight
ed heart of Our predecessor Leo
XIII, who could have seen in
you the impressive realization
of his desires, as he has granted
to Us by Divine Grace . . .”
While encouraging workers to
continue to study and apply the
proven principles that pertain
to social justice, the Pope told
them not to listen to those who
“without respect for truth, his
tory or the present, bend their
efforts to lessen the efficacious
value of Christian intervention
in social questions.” He declar
ed:
“If the working class can
boast today of just and legiti
mate conquests,. if many mis
understandings in the relations
between workers and employ
ers, which once seemed insuper
able, have now been clarified to
the satisfaction of both parties;
if in present laws, or at least
in the intentions of legislators,
impartial justice is extended to
all classes, if the road to social
peace has not been sought (in
Italy) through a sea of your
brothers’ blood — as unfortun
ately happened elsewhere and
without achieving its end — all
this is due to the timely, bril
liant, just and sincere inter
vention of brave Catholics of the
past century, teachers and apos
tles who allowed themselves to
be guided and supported by the
teachings of the Church and

‘Where instead men have
wished to build social concord
without Christ or against
Christ,” the Pope warned, “there
has occurred a lack of every
guarantee and genuine right,
and along with this a lack of
true liberty for the worker and
of security for the future.”
The Pope went on to say that
associations of Christian work
ers m u s t become schools of
Christian training and of the
apostolate.
They are opposed, he noted,
by “outmoded prejudices, often
artfully encouraged by the so-
called incompatibility of relig
ion and progress,” or by an even
more damaging prejudice
“which would identify the
Church as the adversary of
workers.”
“Let other workers’ associa
tions,” he continued, “say ‘jus
tice is enough for us!’ as though
the virtues of justice and cha
rity were enemies of one an
other. The contrary is certainly
true. There is in fact no genuine
justice which is not preceded
and prepared by the warmth
of charity.
“Your future, that of your
sons and that of your country is
before you. No Christian worker
can excuse himself from taking
his own activities into account
and assuming his own duties to
the end that this future will be
better, more active and more
secure, than the present.
“Contrary to what your fore
fathers had,” the Pope counsel
ed, “you now have in your
hands the efficacious means to
prepare this happier future.
Make use of these means with
the professional and civic ma
turity at which you have al
ready arrived and in that vis
ion embracing life and the
world which Christ and the
Church have opened before
you.”

Communist Life Is
ROME, (NC) — An indication

by Italy’s touring basketball

The team recently won a se

one game the teammates re
turned to their dressing room to
find a small package left for
them as a gift by an unknown
donor. The package contained a
few small paintings, obviously
done by an amateur, and the
following message:
“We are not athletes, only
Catholics.
“Thank you for the lively
demonstration of spirit and
goodwill which you have shown.
“Take back to your country
our voice of sadness mourning
for liberty which is denied us.”

Cardinal flakes Quick Recovery
Recovering rapidly from his arm amputation, His Eminence
Samuel Cardinal Stritch is shown in this photo taken in his
hospital room. On May 5, exactly one week from his operation,
he was able to leave the hospital for a half hour ride in an
automobile through Rome’s Borghese Gardens.—(NC Photbs).
Cardinal Stritch Described
As Doing Well Following The
Amputation Of His Right Arm
(Radio, N.C.W.C. News Service)
ROME — The condition of
His Eminence Samuel Cardinal
Stritch was described as very
good following a successful op
eration in which his right- arm
was amputated slightly above
the elbow.
The day after his arrival here
to take up his new post as Pro-
Prefect of the Sacred Congre
gation for the Propagation of
the Faith, the Archbishop of
Chicago was hospitalized for
treatment, of a thrombotic oc
clusion (blood clot) in the major
artery of his right arm.
The operation, which took 35
minutes, was performed by Dr.
Pietro Valdoni, Italian cardio
vascular specialist, at the Clini-
ca Sanatrix here.
Present during the operation
were Dr. Ralph Bergen, the
Cardinal’s personal physician,
and Dr. John Keeley, circula
tory specialist and professor of
surgery at Loyola University’s
Stritch School of Medicine. The
two physicians had flown here
from Chicago.
Also present in the operating
room were Dr. Riccardo Galeaz-
zi-Lisi, personal physician of
His Holiness Pope Pius XII, and
Vatican physician Dr. Filippo
Rocchi.
Before going to the anesthesia
room the Cardinal received
Holy Communion. A major relic
of the arm of St. Francis Xavier
was kept in the prelate’s room
the night before the operation.
Upon receiving news of the
Cardinal’s illness, the Pope had
immediately sent him a message
conferring his blessing and ex
pressing his wishes for a speedy
and full recovery.
Cardinal Stritch also express
ed his gratitude for the many
prayers and messages of good
will.
All the priests of the College
of St. Mary of the Lake, Chica
go archdiocesan college in
Rome, were with the Cardinal
before the operation.
The decision to operate was
made by Drs. Valdoni, Rocchi,
Bergen and Keeley follawing
the arrival of the latter two
from the U. S. and a consulta
tion among them, a report of
which was sent to the Pontiff.
Informed of the decision,
Cardinal Stritch expressed the
wish that God’s will be done
and awaited, the Pope’s per
mission to undergo surgery.
The Holy Father’s consent to
the operaton was then conveyed
by Archbishop Antonio Samore,
Vatican Secretary of State for
Extraordinary Affairs. Later the
Pope delegated Dr. Galeazzi-
Lisi to express his satisfaction at
the operation’s Success.
Among the messages-of sym
pathy received by the Cardinal
were telegrams from Vice Pres
ident and Mrs. Richard Nixon,
who promised fervent prayers
for his speedy recovery, and
from Msgr. George Casey, Vicar
General of the Chicago archdio
cese, who informed the Cardinal
that special prayers had been
offered for him at all Sunday
Masses in the . archdiocese.
His operation here was the
first time in the 70-year-old
Cardinal’s life that he had been
hospitalized except for one brief
period for a tonsillectomy.

Which They Built
LEXINGTON, N. C„ (NC) —
A group of Protestant workmen
gathered here on the feast of St.
Joseph the Worker to view their
latest handiwork — a Catholic
church.
The church, Holy Rosary, is
the only Catholic church in this
North Carolina city of more
than -13,000 population. It was
founded here in 1946.
The Protestant workmen were
invited to view the church they
had built by Father Laurence
J. Hill, pastor of Holy Rosary.
Father Hill addressed them and
pointed out that their model as
workers is St. Joseph. The men
then attended a dinner prepared
for them by parishoners.
The new building in contem
porary style, also includes liv
ing quarters for a priest and a
meeting room. It replaces the
old church, which was housed
in a converted residence.
St. Dymphna
Special patron of those af
flicted with mental illness or
nervous disorders is St. Dym
phna (above) whose feast day
is observed on May 15. The
virgin martyr, depicted here
on a church window, was the
daughter of an Irish chieftan.
Her relics, were discovered
near Antwerp in the 13th cen
tury. Since then, numberless
cases of insanity, epilepsy and
other nervous disorders have
been reported as cured at her
shrine at Gheel.—(NC Photos)
