Son Of Church-Hating Nazi,
Hitler’s Personal Assistant,
Is Ordained To Priesthood
By C. M. Sirachwiiz
(N. C. W. C. NEWS SERVICE)
INNSBRUCK, Austria, — The
son of one of Hitler’s top hench
men who had a special hatred
for Christianity has became a
Catholic priest here.
Father Adolf Martin Bor-
mann, 28, of the Missionary
Association of the Sacred Heart
of Jesus, was ordianed in St.
James’s church.
In the later phases on the
nazi regime no name was more
dreaded in Germany than that
of his father, Martin Bormann.
His official rank of Reichsleiter
(Reich leader) of the nazi party
combined with the title as “the
Fuehrer’s personal assistant”
gave no clear indication of Bor-
mann’s functions. But he was
know to wield immense power
behind the scenes and to be
second to none in his hatred of
Christianity and the utter ruth
lessness .with which he pursued
his leader’s totalitarian aims.
Many crimes of stupendous
cruelty committed in the sign of
the swastika were ascribed
largely to his pernicious influ
ence. There is some evidence
that he was killed in the battle
of Berlin, about the time of
Hitler’s suicide, though there
have also been unconfirmed
rumors that he managed to
escape and make his way to
South America.
When the end came and the
nazi regime collapsed Bormann’s
family was no longer in Ger
many. His wife with the seven
younger children had fled to
South Tyrol, while the eldest,
Adolf Martin, aged 17, found
himself, a solitary and forlorn
fugitive, in a remote valley in
the Austrian province of Salaz-
burg.
But Providence took care of
the boy and led him to the
cottage of a deeply religious
peasant family where he was
offered hospitality and a new
home. Here, in truly Catholic
surroundings and an atmospher
of love and charity, Adolf Mar
tin, completely shattered by the
downfall of the idols he had
worshipped and the loss, as he
assumed at the time, of his par
ents and seven young brothers
and sisters, gradually recovered.
Then he met a priest, the
pastor of near-by Maria-Kir-
chental, under whose sympathe
tic and patient guidance he
learned step by step to under
stand and appreciate the beauty
of religious truth. At Maria-
Kirchental, a Marian shrine
high up in the Salzburg hills, he
was received into the Church,
determined already to devote
his life to the propagation of the
Faith.
Two years later, in 1951, he
joined the novices of the Mis
sionary Association of the
Sacred Heart of Jesus and in the
fall of the following year, hav
ing taken his vows, he began
his theological studies at Inns
bruck University.
Father Bormann hopes to be
sent to the part of the Apostolic
