Bishops throughout the country
have saluted the Catholic press
for the essential role it plays in
defending the Faith and educat
ing Catholics.
The Bishops’ praise came in
statements issued in observance
of February as Catholic Press
Month. Many of them paid spe
cial tribute to the achievement
of the Catholic Press in covering
the big stories of the past year—
the death of Pope Pius XII, the
election of His Holiness Pope
John XXIII and the naming of
new cardinals.
Archbishop Gerald T. Bergen
stated: “To know Christ is to love
Him. What better way to know
Him than to be a regular reader
of the press of His Church!”
Archbishop Edward D. Howard
of Portland in Oregon: “With the
growing lay movements within
the Church, Catholic newspapers
and. magazines are more import
ant today than ever before. Not
only do they give detailed ac
counts of events important to the
Church and its people, but they
provide background to help us
understand the significance of
these events.”
Archbishop John J. Swint,
Bishop of Wheeling, W.Va., stat
ed that the Catholic press gives
the faithful “a continuous re
fresher course in their Faith, to
enable them to meet problems
and situations touching on relig
ion and its' practice, which arise
daily in and out of the home.”
Bishop William L. Adrian of
Nashville, Term.: “The nation is
flooded with pernicious, non-re
ligious, non-moral literature, and
unless we strive to counteract the
evil effects of this by keeping in
formed on the Church’s teach
ing, our faith and spiritual life
are sure to suffer.”
Bishop Peter W. Bartholome of
St. Cloud, Minn.; “It is . . . very
necessary that in a Catholic home
in order to aid in the formation
and preservation of a Catholic
spirit we have Catholic news
papers, magazines and litera
ture.”
Bishop Charles F. Buddy of
San Diego, Calif.: “Some refer to
the diocesan publication as a cit
adel, fortified by the word of
God and vitalized by the Spirit
of Wisdom. Others see in it a

challenges.”
Bishop James V. Casey of Lin
coln, Neb.: “Today there is a
wealth of good, solid Catholic
reading available for all. This is
food for spiritual growth.”
Bishop John B. Franz of Dodge
City, Kans.: “No one can excuse
himself from the obligation im
posed by the First Commandment
of God to know the teachings of
our Faith ... To keep you abreast
with the times and the pro
nouncements of the Holy Father,
the directives of your Bishop and
current Catholic affairs, we rely
upon the Catholic press.”
Bishop Daniel J. Gercke of
Tucson, Ariz.: “Someone said re-
cently that Christ foresaw the
Church’s mission through the
Catholic press. The pattern was
set by the sacred writers who
put down the inspired words of
the Bible. It goes that far. Count
less are the souls who find the
truths of Christ through the Cath
olic press.”
Bishop Richard O. Gerow of
Natchez-Jackson, Miss., declared
that Catholics look to the Catho
lic press “not only for news of
particular interest to Catholics
but also . . . for instruction and
to a great extent for guidance in
matters of Catholic principle.”
Bishop Ralph L. Hayes of Dav
enport, Iowa: “The Catholic press
was not content with merely re
porting what was happening in
1958. It explained to its millions
of Catholic readers the signifi
cance, the meaning of what was
happening.”
Bishop Bryan J. McEntegart of
Brooklyn: “. . . Enemies of the
Church realize that with the sup
pression of the Catholic press,
bishops and pastors are deprived
of an important channel of com
munication with their flocks . . .”
Bishop William T. Mulloy of
Covington, Ky.: “. . . In our mod
ern world we must be readers
of good Catholic papers. We need
to be well informed regarding
the Churchs’ analysis of all im
portant questions . . .”
Bishop John King Mussio of
Steubenville, Ohio: “If we could
have the testimony of those good
people behind the Iron Curtain
who today are without their
Catholic paper, I am sure we
would learn how intimate a part
of the people’s life is that news
paper which represents the best
of their thought, of their culture
of their continuing history.”
Bishop Thomas L. Noa of Mar
quette, Mich.: “Fifty years ago
St. Pius X said: ‘In vain will you
build churches, schools and other
institutions unless you develop
at the same time the offensive
and defensive weapon of a strong
Catholic press.’ The same words
of appeal and admonition can be
sounded forth with still greater
emphasis today . . .”
Bishop Leo A. Pursley. of Fort
Wayne, Ind., declared that the
Catholic press “is the ministry of
teaching, obedient to the com
mand of Christ. It is an extension
of the voice of the Church reach
ing into the remotest corners of
the earth to bring enlightenment
to the mind and nourishment to '
the soul.”
Bishop John J. Russell of Rich
mond, Va.: “. . . Catholic litera
ture is a form of adult religious
education which implements the
catechism instruction of one’s
youth and lasts longer than the
Sunday preaching.”
Bishop Bernard J. Topel of
Spokane, Wash: “You should
think and act as a Catholic. To
this end you must know what
your Church is teaching. There
are many vitally important things
said by the Holy Father and your
Bishop that only your diocesan
paper can bring to you.”
Bishop John J. Wright of Wor
cester, Mass., stated that without
the Catholic press “one would
have an incomplete knowledge
of the interests of the Church on
the national and world level, as
well as a limited insight into the
objectives and problems of the
Church ...”
Auxiliary Bishop Thomas J.
McDonough of Savannah, Ga.:
“It is wrong to give people the
impression that the Catholic press
needs their support. On the con
trary, the Catholic press is need
ed to support the people in their
Faith.”
The trouble with learning
lessons the hard way is that it’s
usually the wrong people who
get the experience.
People wouldn’t have such a
hard time keeping up with ex
penses if they didn’t have . to
keep up with their neighbors.
