Abbot Vincent
Taylor Library
BELMONT—The Rev. Harold
Gardiner, S. J., the literary edi
tor of the national Catholic
weekly, America, was the
principal speaker at the minor
convocation to be held at Bel
mont Abbey College on the oc
casion of the dedication of the
new Abbot Vincent Taylor
Library.
The two-day dedication cere
monies took place on Friday
and Saturday, April 3rd and 4th.
The large, spacious and func
tional library building was oc
cupied in September, but the
dedication was delayed until all
the equipment, furnishings and
housekeeping were completed.
At the convocation on Friday
evening, April 3rd, the Rt. Rev.
Archabbot Denis Strittmatter,
O. S. B., of St. Vincent’s College,
conferred an honorary degree,
Doctor of Laws, on Father
Michael Mclnerney, O, S. B., the
priest-monk architect who de
signed the library.
On Saturday, April 4th, the
day of the formal dedication,
th'g Ceremonies consisted of an
Open House from 10:00 A. M.
until 5:00 P. M. At 2:00 P. M.
the solemn blessing of the
library building took place in a
simple but impressive ceremony.
A nationally recognized liter
ary critic, author and literateur,
Father Harold Gardiner, S. J.,
was the guest speaker and de
livered an address on the sub
ject, “The Library in a Liberal
Arts College.”
Of special interest during the
dedication was an exhibit of the
art work of students and a spe
cial exhibit '• of the paintings of
Sister M. Theophane of Sacred
Heart College. Many of the spe
cially priceless books in the
Abbey’s 60,000-volume collec
tion will be displayed, among
which will be the incunabula
and early imprints in the col
lege library, as well as the
choice items in the Abbey min
eral collection.

ARGENTINA EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS
CALLED BY BISHOPS; WILL STRESS
CHRISTIAN SOCIAL ORDER RIGHTS
Cultivate the habit of looking
on the bright side of things.
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina,
(NC) — Christian reconstruction
of the social order will be the
theme of Argentina’s sixth Na
tional Eucharistic Congress, to
be held in Cordoba from Octo
ber 7 to 11.
In announcing the congress
in a pastoral letter, Argentina’s
Bishop said that because of the
“blasphemous denial” of the
rights of the human person “it
is our duty to raise our voice as
a Catholic nation to reaffirm
the sovereign rights of Christ
in the social life of the people.
The pastoral, adopted at a
plenary meeting of the Bishop,
also stated:
“It is necessary that Christ
reign over all Argentina, in-
buing by His law of justice and
love all the social structures
of the country, and inspiring
the activity of those in power
toward the true needs and wel
fare of the people.”
The Bishops charged that “a
selfish and materialistic philo
sophy tries to build society to
the exclusion of Christ by re-

Silence But 8s
Greeted By Boar
ROME, (Radio, NC) —Even
though he had asked for silence,
His Holiness pope John XXIII
was greeted by the usual roar
of applause when he arrived
at the Basilica of St. Paul-Out-
side-the-Walls to take part in
Palm Sunday rites.
Before the papal procession
entered the church the Pontiff
ordered that the faithful should
be instructed not to applaud or
shout. The throng was so in
structed. But one might as well
have said “hush” to a thunder
clap. As soon as the Pope en
tered the basilica through the
sacristy door, the crowd broke
into its usual uproar.
It was only when the Holy
Father himself put his finger
to his lips to quiet them that a
puzzled silence fell on the
crowd.
From that point on the Pope’s
hand alternately blessed and
went to his lips to silence the
faithful. Only an occasional
flutter of applause broke out
among those who had not yet
caught the signal.
Apparently the Pope’s think
ing was that the Vicar of Christ
should not be greeted with the
customary joyful demonstration
when he had come to com
memorate the Passion of Christ.
Except for the presence of
the Pontiff and the papal court,
the Palm Sunday rite at the
basilica here was the same as
that celebrated in the Latin
Rite in every part of the world
on that day. His Holiness took
part in the procession through
the church to honor Christ the
King and he stood with a spe
cially prepared palm in his hand
during the chanting of the
Passion.
The Sistine Choir, under the
direction of Msgr. Domenico
Bartolucco, sang the chants of
the Palm Sunday liturgy.
legating the teachings of reve
lation to the category of myths.”
The Bishops recalled that the
congress will take place 25
years after the International
Eucharistic Congress that was
held in Buenos Aires. The late
Pope Pius XII, at that time
Eugenio Cardinal Pacelli, pre
sided at the congress.
