THE ENEMIES OF LOVE.
by Aelred Watkin, Kenedy,
$3.00.
THE PRIMACY OF LOVE,
by August Adam, Newman,
$3.25.
(Reviewed by Cecilia L. Hines)
Catholic books on love deal
mainly with three aspects; the
beauties of spiritual love (usual
ly in a rather vague and nebul
ous fashion), the duties of mari
tal love, and the appalling sin
of extramarital relations.
Dom Watkin’s book does none
of these things. He first analyses
the nature of human love
its awareness and growth; then
talks about the enemies which
beset it. He designates these
enemies by name — anxiety,
jealousy, possessiveness, selfish
ness and false romance—and de
votes a full chapter to his sub
ject. Next follows the means of
overcoming these dangers by
certain tests—unrequited love,
loneliness in love, the death of
love-in order for man to attain
the asceticism of love and its
triumph on the human level.
Dom Aelred Watkin is a
Benedictine monk of Downside
Abbey and a son of E. I. Wat-
' kin, the English philosopher
and writer. He writes for ordin-
ary people: for those who are
interested in getting beyond
newspaper column advice and
who, while just beginning to
discover their emotions, are
truly seeking a norm which is
sure and constant.

OUR LADY OF THE HILLS CAMP
is more a study of pastoral theo
logy and is intended by the au
thor to be helpful to his brother
priests in their teaching and
care of souls.
Discussing the false emphasis
placed (in modern times) on the
meaning of the word immorality
as used in the sense of unchas-
ity. Dr. Adam traces the source
of this confusion and then goes
on to place sexual morality in
its focus. Overemphasis can so
easily be placed on sex without
any understanding on the love
which Christ called the greatest
of virtues—this, in reality, en
dangering instead of furthering
sex morality.
This book is a most valuable
contribution on a fundamental
subject. It is translated by
Elizabeth C. Noonan, has seen
six printings in Germany, and
has been translated into Dutch,
Portugese and Flemish.
ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE
PAPACY, by Hans Kuhner,
Philosophical Library, $6.00.
(Reviewed by Elizabeth Hesier)
It is a sometimes awkward
fact that horrors can be effec
tively relayed in the briefest
barely literate paragraphs,
while virtuous acts can be dra
matically conveyed only by in
tricate and usually quite
lengthy works of art. Murdered,
bodies, illegitimate children,
stolen silver, all can be seen viv
idly with just the slightest sug
gestion. On the other hand, who
really pictures marvelous acts
, of statesmanship, highly intell
ectual and inspired refutations
of heresies, and great sweetness
of soul simply because, in one
ungarnished sentence, one is
told they were embodied in
some man long since dead?
With the foregoing knowledge
conditioning one’s approach to
such a book as the Encyclopedia
cf the Papacy, a very large
question arises. This “encyclo
pedia” actually is a short book
(slightly under 250 pages), but
it gives us, no less, “biographies”
of about 261 popes. As a collec
tion of such facts as we have,
the book appears to have in
tegrity and to have aimed at
being an absolutely honest au
thority. But whether, with the
above mentioned dramatic ef
fect a working reality, this
honest delivery of the bare facts
gives an honestly proportioned
idea of the papacy, one has great
cause to wonder. The truth is
that read as a whole this book
is a collection of horrors inter
spersed with some dull spots.
One cannot imagine a non-Cath-
olic reading it without disgust.
One who is a believer can read
it with only one re-action, and
that is that, Mr. Jack Webb not
withstanding, “the facts” do not
always convey the essential
truth. If ever there existed an
excellent argument for the
cause of artistic representation,
this book is it.
As a reference work, the En
cyclopedia of ihe Papacy may
have some value. However, any
adequate library seemingly
would contain a Catholic Ency
clopedia which surely would
contain substantially the same
information as this small book.
Its value as part of a personal
library might be considerable,
but very likely this would be a
rare instance.
