Warn Against
Obscene Greeting
Card Traffic
NEWARK, N. J., (NC)—Con
certed action by Catholics and
non-Catholics is necessary to
prevent the traffic in obscene
greeting cards “from becoming
a new flood of immoral and at
times sacrilegious trash,” the
Newark Archdiocesan Legion of
Decency Office has warned.
The office said suggestive and
antireligious St. Patrick’s Day
greeting cards are now on the
market. There also have been
obscene Mother’s Day cards,
and sacrilegious Christmas cards,
a statement issued by the office
declared.
The statement advised Catho
lics: “A friendly but firm and
uncompromising statement of
your attitude to any storekeeper
carrying objectionable greeting
cards is indicated. A reminder
that your continued patronage
at his store is incompatible with
his continued sales of offensive
matter is in erder.”
Cardinal Honored
OXFORD, England, (NC) —
His Eminence William Cardinal
Heard has been elected an hon
orary fellow of Balliol College
—the second cardinal since the
Reformation to be so honored
by an Oxford University college.
The Scottish-born churchman,
who was made a cardinal by His
Holiness Pope John XXIII last
December, studied law at Bal
liol. While ther in 1907 he was
selected fo rthe crew of the uni
versity’s rowing eight against its
traditional rival, Cambridge.
Cardinal Heard, former dean
of the Sacred Roman Rota, is
the only Scotsman in the Sacred
College of Cardinals and the
only British Commonweealth
cardinal seerving in the Roman
Curia. A convert, he worked as
a lawyer in London before be
coming a priest.
The only other post-Reforma-
tion cardinal to be given an hon
orary fellowship at Oxford was
cardinal John Henry Newman,
who was honored by his old
college, Trinity, in the closing
years of his life. Cardinal Fran
cis Bourne, then Archbishop of
Westminster, received the uni
versity’s honorary degree of
Doctotr of Letters in 1922.
Archbishop Ambrogio Marchioni, Papal Nuncio to Guate
mala, carries the Blessed Sacrament on a gilded chariot
along a three mile route on the Avenue of the Americas in
Guatemala City. The solemn rites marked the first anni
versary of the Central American Eucharistic Congress, held
in Guatemala in 1959, to which His Eminence Francis Cardi
nal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, was Papal Legate.

Emergency Food
PAENGYONG ISLAND, Ko
rea, (NC) — A shipload of food
that included 425 bags of flour
and 425 bags of cornmeal aided
13,000 starving refugees on three
barren islands 60 miles off the
west coast of Korea.
The densely populated islands
benefited from an emergency
shipment from Catholic Relief
Services-National Catholic Wel
fare Conference and its Protes
tant counterpart, Church World
Service, after an appeal from
Father Edward Moffett, M.M.,
The Maryknoll priest, who is
alone in the parish embracing
the tiny islands within sight of
communist North Korea, distrib
uted the food to the needy.
Help for the islanders has
been received regularly, but 50
children died of malnutrition re
cently. The islanders’ fishing
season was still a month away,
and they are handicapped by be
ing unable to use the good fish
ing area north of the demilitar
ized zone.
