HAMMER AND FIRE, by
Rapheal Simon, O.C.S.O., Kene
dy, $3.95.
(Reviewed by Cecilia L. Hines)
This is a very rich book—al
most too rich. It has an im
mense scope when it attempts
to spread out before man the
subject of Divine Happiness and
Mental Health. For any layman
to -get its powerful impact on
his personal spiritual life it must
be taken in small and con
centrated doses.
Hammer and Fire takes its
title from the prophet Jeremias
(28:29), and seeks to develop
mental peace for man by spirit

means of the Church such as
liturgy and sacraments. In the
final chapter the important
place that psychology has as a
guide at the present time is
discussed in detail and some
length.
One of the most interesting
chapters treats of The New
Adam and Eve—The Fruit of
the Tree of Life. It brings out
very clearly how the great
Physician diagnoses our ill and
tells us that love of self is at
the root of all sin. Then follows
an itemized list which sums up
a number of other sins (often
passed over as unimportant)
and their sources. As a layman
I feel that this chapter will be
of great value and a consolation
to many good people who have
gained from their catechism
only a general idea of the great
sacrament of penance.
This book contains spiritual
reading in the very best sense;
forceful and gentile, practical
and uplifting. There are times
when the context does seem
rather long drawn out.
An appendix containing prac
tical hints and recommendations
is divided into different cata-
gories which makes it more
helpful to the student. For some
reason an index is omitted; it
would he of equal if not more
value to the studious reader
when he is seeking particular
and related assistance in mo
ments of uncertainty.
Father Raphael Simon is a
Cistercian monk who entered
the order in America at the age
of 31. He has several college
degrees and training in psycho
logy. Since his ordination in
1947 he has served as novice
master, confessor and spiritual
advisor to both laity and priests.
The story of his conversion was
published as an autobiography
under the title The Glory of Thy
People, and has been widely
read.

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
IN THE MODERN WORLD,
by E. E. Y. Hales, Image edition,
95c. Among the quotations in
the front of this new Image
Book is the following excerpt
from THE BULLETIN'S re
view of the original, hard-cover
edition: “His book is exciting
reading. His explanations of
little understood events and
papal policies are rewarding.
His conclusions are thoughtful
and thought-provoking. H i s
manner of writing history is
skillful and scholarly yet never
dull or humorless. His book
should truly fill a gap in current
historical literature . . .”

ONLY ON ANNIVERSARY
Clarify Requirement
For Indulgence in
Kissing Wedding ling
VATICAN CITY, (Radio, NC)
—The Acts of the Holy See, the
official Vatican publication, has
published a clarification in con
nection with an indulgence for
married persons who kiss the
wife’s wedding ring and recite
a prayer.
The indulgence was granted
last January and may have giv
en the impression that the in
dulgence could be gained daily,
the clarification said. The pub
lication pointed out, however,
that this indulgence can be
gained only on the anniversary
of the wedding.
The January announcement
WASHINGTON (NC)—A spir
itual retreat gives a “perspec
tive of what we are, why we
are in the world and of our
eternal destiny,” the representa
tive of His Holiness Pope John
XXIII in the U. S. declared
here.
Archbishop Egidio Vagnozzi,
Apostolic Delegate to the U. S.,
told 800 m&n of the Loyola Re
treat League at their annual
Communion breakfast, that a
retreat is the “most powerful
means of recharging our spirit
ual life.”
He said that American Cath
olics are “far above average”
in the practice of their religion
and in their cooperation in the
work of the Church.
He warmly commended the
introduction of the dialogue
Mass in all churches in the
Washington archdiocese as - a
means of letting the laity “par
ticipate more intimately in the
spiritual benefits of the Mass.”
The Archbishop said he has
been edified by the growing in
terest of the laity in the life and
work of the Church. He added:
“This invaluable help comes at
an opportune time when civili
zation is facing perhaps its
greatest threat—atheistic com
munism.”
Catholics “must join men of
goodwill everywhere in the con
tinuing and ceaseless fight”
against communism, he said.
said that a 300-day partial in
dulgence could be gained by
couples who “piously kissing,
together or singly, the wedding
ring of the bride, recite the
prayer: ‘Grant us O Lord, that
loving you we may love one an
other and live according to your
holy law,’ or another similar
prayer.”
The purpose of the indul
gence, according to an official
decree, was to promote married
love and fidelity during a time
when the natural and divine
laws governing marriage are
neglected.
“United by our faith, we have
the solemn duty of helping to
lead the fight against commu
nism’s terrible menace to our
freedoms, and to the security
of our homes, our families and
our whole Christian way of
life,” he said.
Emphasizing that every com
munist is the dedicated apostle
of treachery, violence, deceit,
sedition and falsehood, he said
that every Catholic, “must be a
dedicated Christian opposing by
every lawful means the tyran
ny, slavery, oppression and ter
ror of communism.”
Archbishop Vagnozzi was in
troduced by Auxiliary Bishop
Philip M. Hannan of Washing
ton. Earlier the Bishop offered
a Mass for the members of the
Loyola Retreat in St. Patrick’s
church.
Father James A. Martin, S.J.,
director of the Loyola Retreat
House, at Faulkner, Md., and
Judge Charles Fahy of the U. S.
Court of Appeals for the Dis
trict of Columbia, also spoke.
Among the guests of honor were
Associate Justices Charles Whit
taker and William Brennan, Jr.,
of the U. S. Supreme Court.
