Cud- Construction Started On A ■ ■ MIBa.i SAVANNAH — Construction has begun on an additional eight classrooms and cafetorium at St. James Catholic Church, according to an announcement by the Very Rev. John D. Toomey, pastor. St. James school contains kin dergarten through the eighth grade. The cafetorium will accommo date 500 persons and will be used exclusively as the parish church for several years until a large permanent church is con structed. The present church, which has become inadequate for St. James’ expanding con gregation, will be converted into a gymnasium and social hall. A covered passage-way will con nect the present school building to the new one. The new classrooms will ac commodate 350 pupils. Early registration at St. James School several weeks ago indicates an enrollment of approximately 700 students for next term. The Sis ters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and'five lay teachers com prise the present faculty. The new school building and cafetorium is about 18,000 square feet. Of concrete block, it will have terrazzo floors, acoustical ceiling, and winter-summer air conditioning throughout. Architect for the building is Ben P. Ritzert, A.I.A. Stelts Construction Co. was awarded the contract of $162,00. dy and the Rev. William V. Coleman. Officers of the installation mass will be as follows: Celebrant, Most Rev. Edigio Vagnozzi, Ph.D., S.T.D., J.C.D., Apostolic Delegate to the United States. Preacher will be the Most Rev. Thomas J. McDon ough, D.D., J.C.D., Bishop of Savannah. The Right Rev. Msgr. T. James McNamara, P.A., V.F., will serve as assistant priest. Deacons of honor will be the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thomas A. Brennan and the Rt. Rev. Herman J. Dei- mel, V.F. Serving as deacon for the mass will be the Very Rev. John D. Toomey, S.T.L. The Very Rev. Bede Lightner, O.S.B., will be sub deacon and the Right Rev. Msgr. Gerald V. McDevitt, J.C.D., will act as master of ceremonies. Notary for the in stallation mass will be the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Andrew J. McDon ald, J.C.D. Seminarians of St. John Vianney Seminary and the Cathedral altar boys will serve as minor officers. SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT APRIL 30TH The Savannah Bulletin will issue a special 24 page tabloid supplement on the oc casion of the Installation of His Excellency the Most Rev. Thomas J. McDonough, D.D., J.C.D., as Tenth Bishop of the Diocese of Savannah. This supplement will be in cluded in our issue of April 30th, which will give com plete coverage to the Instal lation ceremonies. Imm Award For Aquinas Student AUGUSTA — The Elk’s Club of Augusta selected Anne Smith, a senior at Aquinas High School, for “The Most Valuable Student Award.” The presentation was made at the Elk’s Club on March 31st. Apostolic Delegate To The United States Savannah Site Of Twenty-First D.C.C.W. Convention Apr. 30-May 1 SAVANNAH—Catholic women of the Diocese of Savan nah will gather here for the 21st annual convention of the Savannah Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, April 30th and May 1st. Convention preparations are under the supervision of the Very Rev. John D. Toomey, Spi ritual Moderator with Mrs. George W. Chandler of St. Mich ael’s parish, Savannah Beach, General Chairman. Reservations for the Conven tion should be made directly with the DeSoto Hotel, Savan nah and luncheon and banquet reservations can be made by SKETCH OF NEW ADDITION ST. Streadman is chairman of the panel discus sion. Participants in this discus sion are Rev. Felix Donnelly, pastor of the Nativity of Our Lord, in Thunderbolt, Sr. Mary Thomasine, R.S.M., Mrs. John Brennan and Miss Julie Miller. The banquet on Saturday night will have as principal speaker, The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Martin H. McDonough, Director of the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The subject of the address will be “The Catholic Challenge.” The Most Rev. Thomas J. Mc Donough, D.D., J.C.D., Bishop of Savannah will be celebrant of the Convention Mass which will be offered at 8 a. m. -Sunday, May 1st, at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The Cathedral Parish Council of Catholic Women will be host at a Continental Breakfast to be served on Sunday morning in the Cathedral Day School Cafe torium. (Continued on Page 8) CATHEDRAL SCENE OF COLORFUL PAGEANTRY SAVANNAH — The program, commemorating the sol emn installation of His Excellency, The Most Reverend Thomas Joseph McDonough, D.D., J.C.D., as the tenth Bish op of the historic See of Savannah, will begin Tuesday, April 26, and will conclude on Wednesday, April 27. Tuesday marks the arrival of His Excellency, The Most Rev erend Egidio Vagnozzi, Ph.D., S.T.D.,J.C.D., Apostolic Delegate to the United States, and Wed nesday, the actual day ol instal lation. Archbishop Vagnozzi comes to Savannah at this time to formally install Bishop Mc- Donougn as Ordinary of the Diocese of Savannan in succes sion to His Excellency, the Most Reverend Gerald Patrick O’ Hara, D.D., J.U.D., who until his resignation recently was the Bishop of Savannah. Archbishop O’Hara serves currently as the Apostolic Delegate to Great Britain. On nis arrival Tuesday morn ing at the Union Station, Sav- annah, at six-thirty Archbisnop Vagnozzi will be greeted by Eisnop McDonough, who will be accompanied by the Clergy of tne Diocese and representative laymen of the installation com mittee. At tne Union Station a motorcade, under police escort will xorin and proceed to the Cathedral rectory. At 12:00 o’clock (noon) on Tuesday on tne plaza, front ing tne Cathedral tnere will be a rormal reception to Archbish op Vagnozzi and Bishop Mc Donough by the schools of the Diocese of Savannah. Ail stu dents of the Catholic schools of Savannah and Chatham County from the third grade through the twelfth, together with dele gations of pupils from the other schools of the Diocese will as semble on the Cathedral plaza at 11:45 o’clock Tuesday morn ing. On this occasion there will be a special musical program by the Benedictine School Military Band, botn in advance and af ter tne assembly. During the as sembly there will be group sing ing, under the direction of Mrs. Joseph C. Schreck, chairman of the music committee of the in stallation. Following the group singing, two young ladies of St. Vincent’s Academy, Savannah, escorted by an officer detail from the Benedictine cadets, Savannah, will make a presenta tion of formal scrolls from the schools of the Diocese to both Archbishop Vagnozzi and Bish op McDonough. The school re ception will conclude with Mon signor McNamara, chairman, presenting His Excellency, Bish op McDonough, v/ho in turn will present the distinguished visitor, Archbishop Vagnozzi. As the school reception concludes the Benedictine School band will play “The Star Spangled Ban ner.” At 6:30 o’clock, the evening of Tuesday, April 26, there will be a formal dinner, tendered by His Excellency, Bishop McDon ough and the clergy of the Dio cese in honor of His Ex cellency, Archbishop Vagnozzi. Presiding on this occasion will be the Right Reverend Monsig nor T. James McNamara, P.A., V.F., General Chairman of the installation program. This cler gy dinner will be held in the Gold Room of the Hotel DeSo to. Chamber music during the dinner will be by the Theodore Henkle Ensemble and vocal so los will be by Mrs. Thomas Tra pani, accompanied by Mrs. Jos eph C. Schreck. Wednesday, April 27th, the day of solemn installation, the program begins with the Solemn- Pontifical Mass, which will be preceded by the actual ceremony of installation. Participating in the processional and the reces sional of these liturgical func tions will be members of the Fourth Degree Assembly, Knights of Columbus from throughout the Diocese; a detail from botn Hunter Air Force Base and Fort Stewart; an of ficer detail from the Benedic tine Cadet Corps; papal honor- ees; as well as tne clergy of the Diocese and the visiting clergy, who come to honor our Bishop on this momentous occasion. Tde ceremony of installation will begin promptly at 11:00 o’ clock and tne processional, in advance of the ceremony, will move from the Catnedral rec tory at 10:45. The musical pro gram for these liturgical lunc- tions will be sung by the Catne dral James B. Copps Memorial Choir, under the direction of Mr. E. J. Deacy, choirmaster, assist ed by Mrs. Joseph C. Schrecx, Cathedral organist. Following the Mass of instal lation at 12:45 o’clock in the cafeteria of the Cathedral Day School, dinner will be served the Sisters in attendance. The mus ical program for this dinner will be under the direction of Mrs. Joseph O. Tegerson, Jr., co- cliairman of the music commit tee for the installation program. H i s Excellency, Archbishop Vagnozzi and His Excellency, Bisnop McDonough will speak briefly to the Sisters at the din ner. At 1:00 o’clock, the installation dinner, honoring Bishop McDon ough, will be held in the ball room and the Cotillion Room of the Hotel DeSoto. Presiding on this occasion will be Mon signor McNamara and speaking will be the Right Reverend Monsignor Daniel J. Bourke, V.F., Bishop MdDonough and Archbishop Vagnozzi in the or der indicated. Soloist at the din ner will be Mrs. Thomas Trap ani, accompanied by Mrs. Jos eph C. Schreck. Chamber music for the dinner will be by the Professor Weigand Trio. The two days of commemora tion of this historic event of installation will conclude with a brilliant civic reception in the ballroom of tiie Hotel DeSoto the evening of April 27 from 8:00 to 10:00 o’clock. Beautiful pageantry will mark the recep tion. In advance of the formation of the reception line, which will include the platform guests of the civic reception, there will be a brief speaking program at which Dr. Thomas J. McGold- rick of Savannah will preside. The Honorable W.
