He is Archbishop Jozsef Groesz of Kalocsa, acting head of Hungary’s Hierarchy, who reportedly died of a heart at tack (Oct. 3) at the age of 73. Archbishop Groesz was the ranking prelate of Hungary af ter Jozsef Cardinal Mindszen- ty, Archbishop of Esztergom, who has been living in the U. S. legation in Budapest, since Soviet troops crushed the 1956 Hungarian regime. Plants, Acreage, Shopping Center Dev., Industrial Dev., Subdivision Dev., Insurance JA. 4-2053 MIKE & STEVE SERTICH opposed the nazis during their occupation of Hungary in World War II, was tried in 1951 on trumped-up charges of plotting to overthrow Hunga ry’s Red regime with the aid of the U. S. Sentenced to 15 years in prison, he served five years of his term and then was released by the regime as a “gesture of clemency.” On his release from jail in the spring of 1956 he became acting head of the Hungarian Hierarchy during the absence of Cardinal Mindszenty, then under arrest. He served in that post until his death save for a few days in November, 1956, when Cardinal Mindszenty was temporarily free during the uprising. Earlier this year Archbishop Groesz dared the communists to send him back to jail when he protested against the im prisonment of a group of Hun garian priests on false charges of conspiring against the gov ernment. He stated in a letter to Premier Ferenc Muennich: “These men have been my collaborators for years. I per sonally assume responsibility for everything they have done. If these priests are convicted, I request that you arrest me too and jail me with my friends.” The Archbishop was born to a peasant family in Feltro- ny, Hungary, on December 9, 1887. He was ordained in 1911 and consecrated a Bishop in 1929. Ten years later he was named Bishop of Szombathely and in 1943 was made Arch bishop of Kalocsa. As Bishop of Szombathely, Archbishop Groesz became very popular because of his simplicity and sense of humor. He was an able administrator. During his tenure as Bishop he put the economic affairs of his See in good order. When he left, even town councilors wept. In Kalocsa he walked about town alone in a plain black suit. He went daily to the Jesuit church for evening prayer and knelt with the gen eral public. He regularly heard confessions. He showed great ability in administering the farms at tached to the archdiocese, pay ing special attention to the so cial conditions of his employ ees. He had entire blocks of cottages built for the farm workers. Each cottage had a garden and a plot of land. He provided the workers with family allowances, social serv ices and saw to it that each family kept a cow, poultry, and pigs, and grew vegetables. When the communists con fiscated the farms of the arch diocese the workers protested on the grounds that they were completely satisfied with their lot. During the German occupa tion, Archbishop Groesz stood up against the nazis with great courage. He saved many per secuted Jewish families, inter vened with the authorities whenever he learned of an in justice and warned his flock and priests against nazi bland ishments. The Archbishop said he felt relieved when Soviet troops drove out the nazi invaders. After the Soviet occupation, the Russian general in charge of the district lived in the Archbishop’s palace arid they got on well. Archbishop Groesz has said that he was proud to call the general his friend. He tried to concede as many com munist and Soviet demands as possible and to cooperate loy ally in order to protect his flock against unnecessary com plications. ST. GEORGIA Where Insurance Is A Profession .. . Not A Sideline He sought understanding and compromise with the Sov iets, although he never gave up any principle. He went far in concessions. But when ask ed to act against his con science, he became firm as a rock. When the Russians set up their war memorial in Kalocsa, they invited Archbishop Groesz to attend and he did. When “security police” ar rested his secretary, Father Karoly Sztrilich, in 1947, the Archbishop went to Russian Ambassador Pushkin in Buda pest to enlist his help. Mr. Pushkin intervened and Fa ther Sztrilich was promptly released. Until the spring of 1948, the communists and the Russians held up the Archbishop of Kal ocsa as the man “with whom one can talk reasonably,” who is “so different from the intol erant, reactionary Mindszen ty.” Many people in Hungary were actually fearful that Archbishop Groesz might give in to the communists. When the regime began to attack the Church, the Arch bishop rejected its false accu sations in strongly worded pas toral letters. As the regime’s campaign against Cardinal Mindszenty gained momentum, it was Archbishop Groesz who suggested that the Hungarian Conference of Bishops affirm “absolute solidarity with the Cardinal.” After imprisoning the Card inal, the Reds turned on the Archbishop for supporting him and jailed him on trumped-up charges in 1951. Following his release in 1956, Archbishop Groesz refus ed to take over the Cardinal’s primatial See of Esztergom at the request of the Reds. Since being free the Archbishop had condemned Red efforts to pro mote artificial birth control, called for greater freedom for the Church in Hungary and sought to minimize communist interference in Church affairs. FAIRNESS- (Continued from Page 2) reconciling the tradition of separation of Church and State with public aid to denomina tional colleges and universities is more complex and perplex ing. “Perhaps it is sufficient here to note that our academic cous ins, the British and the Cana dians, seem to have solved the problem by giving state aid to both public and denomination al schools without impairing either religious or intellectual freedom, and that the time may have come when we should rethink our own tradi tional and instinctive attitudes in this area. “Taxes to support higher ed ucation are like taxes to sup port elementary education, strengthen defense, build roads, maintain hospitals, safe guard the young, operate lib raries and museums and main tain public order. The principle that underlies all of these en terprises is that they are essen tial to the well-being of socie ty.” What important truths emerge from this friendly dis cussion? 1. There is nothing in the Constitution that forbids the use of public funds, Federal, state or community, for the ed ucation of the youth of Ameri ca in all subjects except reli gion, in public, nonprofit church-related or other private schools. 2. The method of allocating such funds must be worked out carefully, assigning them ei ther to the students or their parents. The proposal of the Citizens for Educational Free dom that tuition grants, equal in amount to the help made available to public school chil dren, be given in certificates to all other students, negotia ble only at the school of their choice, fits admirably with all the decisions of the Supreme Court. 3. No public funds may be allocated for the teaching of religion. This reflects the com mon interpretation of the Con stitution at the present time. Whether that is to be the en during view, only time can tell. We agree, however, with Life’s editorial that all of us, Protestants, Catholics and Jews, have “a lot more think ing to do on this subject” be fore we settle permanently for an education that is entirely divorced from basic religious and spiritual values.
