(Tech nically, these saints have not been newly recognized as such, rather, their cults have now been officially confirmed.) ANOTHER FACTOR was the Mongol invasions, which began in 1237 and continued for a hundred years, leaving Russia paralyzed for as long a period again. A FOOTNOTE: Even the 1946 calendar of saints does not rule out further additions from the past. Thus, the edi tors of the revised Butler’s ‘Lives’ quote one Eastern Rite authority as saying that the new list “does not exclude the possibility of still other Rus sian saints being admitted when more progress has been made in the study of Slav hagiography.” Fr. O'Brien (Continued from Page 4) PUT AT EASE “But Father quickly put us all at ease. In a kind of friend ly manner he explained the divine origin of the Catholic Church and the authority con ferred upon her by Christ to teach all nations in His name. This explains the marvelous unity of the Catholic Church in faith and practice in all the countries of the world. “I was greatly impressed with the doctrine of the Real Presence. What a change this is from the Protestant concep tion of the bread and wine as merely reminders, tokens or symbols of Christ. It seemed almost too good to be true, but Christ’s words in the sixth chapter of St. John’s Gospel leave no grounds for doubt. I was somewhat frightened at the thought of confession, but now it’s a source of great com fort and happiness. “Along with the other nine members of the class, I w-as received into Christ’s true Church and made my first Holy Communion. Richard and I were married a month later and God has blessed us with a little girl. I can never suffi ciently thank God for the won derful gift of faith. I’m grate ful also to Joyce and Martie for bringing me to Mass, to Richard for continuing that practice and taking me to the Inquiry Class and to Father Murphy for such thorough in structions.” FATHER JAMES AMOS, Principal of Catholic High School, Pensacola, Fla., and Spiritual Advisor of the Bishop Toolen Unit (Mobile, Ala.) of the Catholic Library Associ ation, discusses the coming Mid-South Conference meeting with Sister M. Anthony, R.S.M., Librarian, Catholic High School, Pensacola, and secretary of the Mid-South Confer ence and Chairman of Exhibits for the meeting. U Nu de manded such a guarantee be cause of the August enactment making Buddhism the state re ligion of Burma. The Prime Minister was a leading advocate of that decla ration as well, but he had giv en his solemn pledge that the 15 per cent of the people of Burma who are not Buddhists would not suffer from it. About 10 per cent of Burma’s 20 million people are Moslems. Catholics constitute fewer than one per cent. Our Lady at’ Fatima, said her fin al “secret” may be a purely personal communication to His Holiness Pope John XXIII. There is no certainty that it deals w4th world affairs, Fa ther Kilian Lynch, O.Carm., said. The fact that it was to be opened in 1960 — 20 years af ter being written by Sister Lucy — could simply mean that its contents were address ed to the new Pope John and not to his predecessor Pius XII. Father Lynch, Prior of the English Carmelite shrine of Aylesford who was for many years Prior General of the Carmelites* spoke in an inter view published in the Catho lic Times, British national weekly. Father Lynch has had several long conversations with Sister Lucy, now a Carmelite nun in Coimbra, Portugal, who with her two sisters saw the vision of Our Lady at Fatima in 1917. Father Lynch noted that Sister Lucy has been a nun for many years in a strictly enclosed convent. When he met her, he said, she had im- monks, especially in the Ran goon area, voiced strong oppo sition to the amendment prior to its passage. Since they had threatened to picket the halls of Parliament, a large force of police was on hand throughout the district. Elder leaders among the monks opposed such demon strations, holding that a monk should not even raise his hand in passion. But groups of monks stopped the automo biles of members of Parlia ment on their way to the joint session, asking them to sign pledges to oppose the amend ment. Most of the MP’s avoid ed the importuning by con vening at the chamber before dawn. The amendment passed (Sept. 25), and no voilence took place. She is now 54, still very much a peasant, gay, down-to-earth, and very balanced, the Car melite added. “She has certain preoccupa tions,” Father Lynch said. “She longs for people to dedi cate themselves to the Immac ulate Heart of Mary, to say the Rosary daily, to practice the devotion of the Five First Sat urdays. As a good Carmelite she wishes to promote the de votion of the Scapular and she recalls that in the vision of October 13, 1917, Our Lady ap peared as Our Lady of Mount Carmel.” Father Lynch noted that from the beginning Sister Lucy and her two companions were insistent that Our Lady had communicated a secret to them. Since the Bishop of the Fatima diocese in 1930 issued a pastoral letter recording what had apparently happen ed during the six visions of 1917, some information about this secret had been revealed by Sister Lucy, he said. This information is under stood to relate in part to per sonal matters in the three chil dren’s lives, to a vision for hell, to a promise from Our Lady that in return for the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the spread of the devotion of OBITUARIES J. The final part of the “secret” was contained in a letter written by Sister Lucy that was to be opened in 1960. Father Lynch said he did not doubt that this letter was forwarded to the Pope and has surely been opened by him. “There is no certainty that it deals with world affairs,” Fa ther Lynch added. “It may be a purely personal communi cation. The fact that it was to be opened in 1960 may simply mean that its contents were addressed to this Pope rather than Pius XII. “There is no confirmation of the statements that Sister Lucy knew in advance the course of history during the last 40 years, that she knows now whether the end of the world is at hand, whether the age of communism is about to end or when Russia will return to Christianity.” MARRIAGES O- -O SHELTON-FRANKLIN O O ATLANTA — Miss Linda Anne Franklin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.
