Did you know that the peo

are grateful to the boll weevil
for destroying their cotton crop
and that the antlers of deer
are used as a scientific gauge

Author Will Barker, who us

has cleverly blended his sub

has presented an accumulation

The book is geared to both the
youthful and the adult reader.
The student of history will ap

traced through various phases
of change in our country’s his
tory and geography. The buffa
lo, which once roamed the Great
Plains in numbers as high as
sixty million, has been dimi
nished to a mere three to five
hundred today and would really
be extinct if the American Bison
Society had not intervened. On
the contrary, the whitetail deer,
due to its ability to adjust to a
more modern environment, has
increased since the time of the
early settlers. Barker also
reports on the habits of the
antlered elk, the fast-footed
antelope, the brown bear, the
beaver, the otter, as well as of
birds and fish. How the Teddy
Bear got its name; how the
antelopes outwitted their skill
ed Indian hunters; why cod-fish
cures homesickness, and why
the Mormons erected a monu
ment to the sea gulls are ex
amples of how the author com
bines fact and legend. Natural
and realistic illustrations sup
plement the book's one hundred
pages, helping to make it a
delightful survey of American
animal lore.
MORTE D’URBAN, by J. F.
Powers, Doubleday, 1962, 336
pp., $4.50.
Reviewed by FlanneryO’Con-
nor.
Mr. Powers’ novel, long
awaited, has arrived and it is
a fine novel, altogether better
than the chapters published sep-.
arately ift 3 THE NEW YORKER
and THE CRITIC and ESQUIRE
had led one to expect. These
chapters were marked by a
certain sameness that brooded
no good for the future book,
but the whole proves to be
greater than the sum of its
parts and moves forward with
out tedium to a profound con
clusion.
The hero, Fr. Urban, is a
go-getting priest in a non-go-
getting order. His mission is to
the "better-type” soul and,
against fearful odds, he mana
ges to promote the construction
of a golf course at his order’s
retreat house; but Fr. Urban’s
soul is worth saving and Mr.
Powers proceeds to save it,
even if ultimately at the espense
of the golf course and the or
der’s material gain.
In some circles this novel
will be read as if it were an
essay entitled, "The Priest in
America.” Some reviewers will
point out that Fr. Urban is not
typical of the American priest;
some will imply that he is.
This reviewer would like to
point out that Mr. Powers is a
novelist, moreover a comic no
velist, moreover the best one we
have, and that Fr. Urban repre
sents Fr. Urban. If you must
look for anyone in him, Reader,
look for yourself.
MATER ET MAGISTRA
(CHRISTIANITY AND SOCIAL
PROGRESS). Pope John XXIII.
MESSAGE OF PEACE,Pope
John XXIII, 1961, St. Paul Ed
itions, Boston, Mass.
Reviewed by REV. LEON
ARD F. X. MAYHEW.
“We reaffirm strongly,”
Pope John writes in MATER
ET MAGISTRA,“that Christian
social doctrine is an integral
part of the Christian conception
of life.” We sense that the Holy
Father’s need to reaffirm
strongly such a basic point
arises from his realization of
the all too general ignorance on
the part of Catholics regard
ing this aspect of Catholic doc
trine and life.
The radical changes that ev
ery segment of society has ex-
pienced in our time pose pe
culiar and perplexing questions
to the Christian conscience. The
Church is obliged first by its
divinely imposed teaching
mandate and also from its very
nature as committed to the sal
vation of every human creature
to measure the moral dictates
of reason and revelation against
the flesh and blood pro
blems that beset mankind.This
.is the meaning of Catholic
social doctrine. "The Church
by her very nature cannot re
main indifferent to human suf
fering, even were it no more
than anxiety and anguish."
(Pope John XXIII, MESSAGE
OF PEACE, 1961). Every pro
blem which affects man deeply-
whether it be political, social,
economic or cultural- in
fluences at the same time and
to the same degree his abi
lity to achieve his ultimate
purpose. It is true also that
the world and human society
have a vocation progressively
to reflect more perfectly the
mind of their Maker and End.
For these reasons, every aspect
of human life and activity is
subject to the laws of natural
and revealed morality and
therefore, to the guidance of the
teaching church.
Catholic social doctrine, as
a recognizably distinct entity,
was born in the great encycli
cal of the Pope Leo XIII, RE
RUM NOVARUM (The condition
of Labor). , written in 1891.
Forty years later Pius XI ap
plied the principles of Chris
tian morality to the social order
more broadly in his encyclical,
QUADRAGESIMO ANNO (On the
Reconstruction of the Social Or
der). Pius XII, in numerous doc-
umnets and addresses during
his reign, discussed many spe
cific social problems. On the
seventieth anniversary of Leo’s
encyclical, Pope John XXIII
published MATER ET MAGIS
TRA (Christianity and Social
Progress), the longest and most
detailed papal social document
to date. In his encyclical the
Holy Father both re-states the
teaching of his predecessors
and brings the light of Chris
tian principles to bear on the
peculiarly new problems of the
post-war world. MATER ET
MAGISTRA is an indespensible
synthesis of Catholic social mo
rality and provides the deter
mining standards of our atti
tudes and actions in the face
of social questions. It is par
ticularly the Catholic layman’s
responsibility to apply these
principles in concrete cases.
It is therefore his duty to make
himself familiar with their
meaning.

the encyclical is available are:

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
ON COMMUNISM, by Richard
Cardinal Cushing, St. Paul Ed
itions, 1960, 2nd revision, 222
pp., $1.25 (paper) and $2.25
(cloth).
This book is an attempt to
educate the complacent Ameri
cans, especially Catholic youth,
in the facts about Communism,
a very present and potent force
which is too rapidly shrinking
the free world, nation by nation,
through the fruits of appease
ment. Can you answer the sim
ple question: ‘What is Com
munism?’ Cardinal Cushing
answers it and by rapid fire
clarity adds question and ans
wer together until he has a book
which indicates the overt and
subtle nature of Communism,
how it is spread and conveyed,
the means by which it is dis
seminated, the deadly goal of
world domination to which it
is dedicated and the true facts
about its screens and covers
in the sheep’ s clothing of
reform.
An excellent book for senior
high school students and first
and second year college stu
dents in particular because of
its compact readability and the
weapons of information it puts
in the readers’ hands.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
ON COMMUNISM, by Richard
Cardinal Cushing, St. Paul Edi
tions, 1961, Booklet 1, 63 pp.,
50*.
This little book is a simpli
fication of the 1960 reviewed
above. It was made for use in
elementary and junior high
schools and as such is adequate,
interesting, uncomplicated, us
able. It lacks, of course, the
rich and more complete pack
aging of the young adult ver
sion. However, often simplifi
cation is a virtue because it
provides a footing or base for
better absorption. It might be
a good jumping-off place to
study the small pamphlet before
diving into the larger one.
Another group which profit
by the easier readability and
presentation of Booklet 1 would
be candidates for naturalization
who are trying to examine tho
roughly and yet with not too
great a verbal difficulty the
ideologies that Americans ad
mire and also those which they
distrust and do not approve.
Both these Cushing booklets,
because of their format, ques-
tion-and-answer, would be suit
able for discussion clubs or
groups.
COMMUNISM: THREAT TO
FREEDOM, by John F. Cronin,
Paulist Press, 1962, 80 pp.,
50*.
A pamphlet that attracted
much attention upon its release
because it stated the Catholic
position as opposed to activity
in extreme Rightest groups,
this small booklet certainly
states the case neatly without
mincing matters.
Divided into three parts: the
world scene, Communism in the
United States, the world-wide
struggle against the Communist
threat, the pamphlet informs,
warns, and advises. By no
means its least important point
is that internal subversion (in
this country) is not so dan
gerous as not recognizing where
real threat lies, in the exploi
tation of extreme-right group
thinking. Discrimination must
be made between actual com
munistic threat and name
calling by groups who like to
pin the title ‘‘communist’to any
ideas they happen to dislike.
Recommendations on the use of
propaganda to refute psycholo
gical warfare against us, pro
motion of economic strength
and religious conviction, and
the pursuit of fact-finding to
ward what the Communists want
so this can be refuted are all
here, to be studied and digested
in a vital, thought-provoking
booklet that takes little more
time than a thorough persual
of the evening paper.
