News Service) NEW YORK—The Irish scholars who wandered up and down Europe in the seventh, eighth and ninth cen- tries, spreading religion and learning in medieval darkness, are said to have made the most remarkable con tribution ever made by one small country to a continent. J. Dominick Hackett, librarian of the American Irish Historical Society of New York, 132 East 16th Street, this city, holds that Ireland’s modern contribution to the Church in the United States surpasses it. Since 1789 there have been almost 450 Bishops of the Catholic Church m America and of them more than half, or about 250, have been either Irish born or of Irish descent, says Mr. Hackett. He still lacks data on some prelates, and is appealing for informa' tion on them from any source. A record of all the facts was thought by Mr. Hackett to be a fitting con tribution to the celebration of the fifteenth centenary of St. Patrick but, unfortunately, he could prevail on no one to undertake the necessary re search and, therefore, proceeded with it himself. Mr. Hackett needs still to ascertain the names of the father and maiden name of mothers. CARDINAL HAYES LAUDS GIRL SCOUT PROGRAM Comments Particularly on World Camp at Dublin (By N. C. W. C. NEWS SERVICE) NEW YORK.—A letter expressing his deep interest in the Girl Scout program which he suggests as a val uable addition to the church and school activities of the Archdiocese of New York, has been addressed by His Eminence Patrick Cardinal Hayes, Archbishop of New York, to Mrs. Nicholas F. Brady, chairman of the national board of directors of the Girl Scouts. Commenting on the splendid type of girl who represented the American Girl Scouts at the World Camp in Dublin in July, Cardinal Hayes says: “I have always been a supporter of the movement, and my experience last summer during the Eucharistic Congress strengthened my conviction of the value of the work. “I hope this coming year you and your co-workers will have great suc cess in developing the movement in all the parishes of the Archdiocese. I recommend the development of this work to all the clergy and religious. I hope they will find a valuable ad dition to their church and school ac tivities. We will need many Catholic women to be the leaders of these girls, and I trust the call to them to serve the youth in this Archdiocese will not go unheeded.” His Eminence concludes his letter by conferring a blessing on Mrs. Bra dy, her aides and all the members of the Girl Scouts. »■..
