GERMANY (Continued From Page One) significance attached to the religious ceremony, and requiring that there be a civil ceremony. Because marriage interferes with military and labor service, men are forbidden to marry until they are twenty-one, except in special cases, where the age limit may be reduced to 18. AUSTRIANS, not being the dis ciplined people that the Germans are, are giving the Nazi authorities con cern because of their individualistic conduct. German Nazis who flocked to Austria with the expectation of taking over lucrative positions have found opposition in the aspirations of Austrian Nazis, and both sides are bitter in their disappointments. MUNICH Catholics, who numbered 1,434,091 in the Archdiocese in 1936 have increased 33,000, and there has been an increase in the number of priests, baptisms and marriages, despite the religious persecution The Diocese of Spire also reports sub stantial increases. HERR RUST, Nazi Minister of Ed ucation, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the foundation of the University of Cologne and in the pres ence of a notable gathering of di plomats, asserted that the time has come “to be done with the religion founded by Jesus”, a religion he termed an illegiimate cult NAZI LEADERS who scoffed at the infallibility of the Pope, says the Lodove Listy, leading Czechoslovakian newspaper, although the Pope claims infallibility only in matters of faith and morals and when speaking ex cathedra, accept Hitler’s infallibility in politics, in religion, in the fine arts, science, sports, the motion pictures and other fields. OSSERVATORE ROMANO, semi official organ of the Vatican, com menting on the new marriage law promulgated by the Nazis, asserts that it represents the annihiliation of the individual and his complete abandon ment to the arbitration of collectivity represented by the state THE ROMAN Sacred Congregation of Seminaries and Universities calls on Catholic institutions of higher learning “to reject learnedly and validly the calumnies and most bane ful doctrines of Racism” sponsored by the Nazis and to some extent also by Fascists. NAZI leaders of the German-Ameri- can Settlement League in New York have been convicted of violation of the law requiring oath-bound organ izations to file a list of members at the state capitol. The league was fined $10,000, and the five defendants $500 and a year in jail; the jail sent ence was suspended for all but the leader. THE GERMAN Hierarchy will meet August 15 to 18 at Fulda, but the Aus trian Bishops will not meet with them, holding their own meeting at Salzburg at about the same time. REV. ENRICO ROSA, S. J., writing in La Civilta Cattolica in Rome as serts that Nazism cannot be com patible with Catholicism; Nazism is more compatible with Communism, he asserts. PETER EDW.
