The date 1942 was chosen because it will be the twentieth anniversary of the trans fer of the international headquar ters of the Society, from France to Rome, and its establishment as a Pontifical association. Ex-Red Leader Says Stalin Sought Mastery of Spain (By N.C.W.C. News Service) PHILADELPHIA.—Testimony of a former high Soviet official that Rus sian Soviets sought political control of Spain in the recent civil war; that the nucleus of the International Bri gade was 500 to 600 foreign Commu nists sent from Russia; that Stalin instituted a reign of terror in so- called Loyalist Spain in which nu merous Loyalist leaders were liqui dated to give the .Communists an upper hand in the Leftist government; that men trusted by the authorities at Moscow were in societies allied with Comunist centers abroad in such organizations as Friends of the Soviet Union and the many Leagues for Peace and Democracy, is published in the Saturday Evening Post in an article entitled “Stalin’s Hand in Spain.” The article is written by W. G. Krivitsky, a former General in the Red Army. As chief of the Military Intelligence in Western Europe, he was in charge of the major secret operations of the Soviet abroad dur ing a large part of the period of the Spanish civil war. He broke with Stalin in 1937 after the purging of top-ranking generals of the Red Army and after two attempts were made upon his life in France he came to the United States as a refugee. The article states that Stalin’s in terest in Spain was due to his convic tion “that he could create in Spain a regime controlled by Moscow.” “With Spain in his pocket,” the ar ticle adds, “he could command a gen uine and durable alliancewith France and the British Empire. At the same time, his intervention would rekindle the faith of the Soviet adherents abroad, shaken by his purge of the Bolshevik old guard." ENRICO PUCCI (Vatican City Correspondent, N. C. W. C. News Service) VATICAN CITY — His Holiness Pope Pius XII on May 7 pressed forward with his universal crusade of prayer for peace. Comparing the clamor of the cur rent armaments race to the rear of the sea, the Sovereign Pontiff, in a radio address to the Algiers National Eu charistic Congress, said he wished the Month of May “entirely dedicated” to prayers for peace, and repeated his appeal that especially children of fer up their supplications to God. Thus was forcefully recalled to the world that, less than 24 hours after his election to the Papacy, Pope Pius XII proclaimed to all nation by means of radio that peace for all the world was the “first wish” welling in his paternal heart. Taking note of the fact that nations are “trembling in constant anxiety,” and that souls are being greatly trou bled by false doctrines, His Holiness said in his radio discourse. “Here, O beloved children of the noble French nation, you are united in thousands around Christ present in the Holy Eucharist, to offer Him a further solemn act of adoration and reparation. “In the course of recent years, Af rica has more than once seen these ceremonies. Carthage, mindful of hav ing given hospitality to more than 39 Councils within its walls, was the starting point, with its International Eucharistic Congress. Then, with reg ional and national Congresses, the movement spread to South Africa, the Congo, Madagascar and Tripoli. Today the triumph of the Holy Eu charist has been celebrated on a coast which for so long a time was called barbarous. “Our heart exults with joy at tak ing a two-fold part in it. We are, in fact, really present in two ways: vis ibly in the person whom we have chosen as our Legate, so that he should preside over the Eucharistic days in Our name, that is to say, Our beloved son, the Cardinal Archbishop of Paris; invisibly, but really, with Our prayers joined to those of your holy and enthusiastic throng. Neither the waves of the sea nor the roar, as it were of armaments, of surf raging on the shore could withstand your mystic impetus. Notre Dame de la Garde (the great sentinel statue of Our Lady overlooking the harbor of Marseilles) has sent you to the Ma donna of Africa, and in this Holy Host there irradiates from both these hills the faith shown to you by the Prince of Peace—Who is also author of that peace which is today so ar dently supplicated by a human so ciety now so troubled. “This is what has brought you here and encouraged you. This is what unites Us intimately to you in this Month of May, which We wish to be entirely dedicated to prayer (and par ticularly the prayer of children, who (Continued on Page Three) Prayer Not Diplomacy Chief Peace Weapon of the Pope By MSGR. ENRICO PUCCI (Vatican City Correspondent, N. C. W. C. News Service) VATICAN CITY. — While most ex aggerated stories are being circulated in the secular press, attributing to His Holiness Pope Pius XII certain steps in behalf of European peace, Osservatore Romano maintains the utmost reserve, and Vatican circles make no comment at all. These sources merely limit them selves to denying the exaggerated, or invented, news, especially the report that the Pope would help the heads of governments or the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Italy, France, Ger many, England and Poland to assem ble at the Vatican at a meeting over which he himself would preside, in an effort to settle peacefully the ques tion at issue between Germany and Poland, and all other questions which might endanger peace. As was said to us at the Vatican, the mere enunciation of such a statement be shows its absurdity. The truth is that the Pope lias al ways interested himself, and today more than ever, in the great cause at peace, but in the ordinary way. name ly, through normal diplomatic con tacts.' This is why, in recent days. Papal Nuncios have been in touch with the heads of governments and Ministers of Foreign Affairs, to com municate to them the ardent desire and prayers of the Holy Father, that peace may not be compromised and that questions at issue between va rious factions may be solved by pa cific means, pointing out that this may be done if all show themselves well disposed. On the other hand, the Pope has continued to count more and more on the prayers for peace offered up by the Faithful, and this is why he has permitted no occasion to pass with out mentioning the crusade of prayer for peace, especially on the part of children, which he has announced for the present Month of May.
