Our Lady of Fatima Honored by Mass,
Crowning Ceremony and Procession at
St. Francis Xavier Church, Brunswick
(Special to The Bulletin)
BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Mother’s
Day was the occasion of the an
nual May procession at St. Francis
Xavier Church, and the observ
ance this year was given added
solemnity by the blessing of a
crown of gold which was placed
upon the statue of Our Lady of
Fatima.
In 1936, the two hundred or
more members of the Portuguese
colony in Brunswick decided to
present a statue of Our Lady of
Fatima to St. Francis Xavier
Church, and commissioned Manuel
Boa to purchase the statue for
them. Alter consulting several
sculptors in Portugal, Jose Fer
reira Thedim was chosen to de
sign and execute the statue, and
two years later it was completed
and delivered in Brunswick.
The statue is about five feet in
height, is carved of Brazilian ce
dar and is the first to come to the
United States from Portugal, the
land where the apparitions of Our
Lady of Fatima took place.
In November. 1938, the statue
was blessed by Bishop Gerald P.
O'Hara of Savannah-Atlanta. and
er throned in St. Francis Xavier
Church.
At that time a Sodality and a
Confrerie of Our Lady of Fatima
were formed in the parish, and it
was decided that the parish would
honor Our Lady of Fatima with a
Solemn Mass and procession on
Mother’s Day of each year, which

would be the Sunday nearest
May 13, the anniversary of the
first of the appearances of the
Blessed Virgin of Fatima. This day
was also selected as the day for
tire annual blessing of the fishing
fleet of the Portuguese fishermen
of Brunswick.
Since 1938, the day has been ob-
•served with devotion and fervor.
Last year, Mr. Boa went to Por
tugal, and while there, at the re
quest of the Sodality and Con
frerie, sought to purchase a crown
for the statue. Barroso e Filhos
Company, in Oporto, Portugal, de
signed and executed an exquisite
crown of filigreed gold, which he
brought back to Brunswick with
him.
While in Portugal, Mr. Boa and
his daughter, Miss Mary John Boa,
had the privilege of being present
at the services at the Shrine of
Our Lady of Fatima on May 13.
The crown is studded with jew
els and precious stones, and is in
scribed: "Dedicated to the mem
ory of Manuel Manita, Eugene
Cuntinha and Louis Romeira,”.
three young men of Ihe Portuguese
colony in Brunswick who gave their
lives in their country’s service in
World War II.
A similar crown, in silver, was
secured at the same time, for daily
use on the statue, the crown of
gold to be reserved for special
feasts and occasions.
Statues of the three children, to
whom Our Lady appeared at Fa
tima, Jaeinta, Francisco and Lucia,
are now on their way to Bruns
wick. They are carved of Brazil
ian cedar by the same sculptor who
carved that of Our Lady of Fa
tima.
As customary, since the observ
ance was begun in Brunswick, vis
itors have come from great dis
tances to join with the members of
St. Francis Xavier parish in hon
oring Our Lady of Fatima. This
year there were out-of-town par
ticipants from St, Augustine, Fer-
nandina and Mayport, Fla., Da
rien, Ga., and Provincetown, Mass.
The day's service began with the
blessing of the crown by Father
John Mercer, S. M., pastor of St.
Francis Xavier, after which the
crown was placed on the statue by
Miss Mary John Boa. The statue
was then borne in procession by
four members of the Confrerie
Tony Martin, Arthur Martin and
William Vieira, of Brunswick, and
Matias Roland, of Mayport, Fla.
Tlie procession moved through
the streets bordering the church
with hundreds in line, including
members of the Sodality and Con
frerie, the sponsoring groups, the
Knights of Columbus, the Xavier-
ian Club, women’s organizations of
the parish, and pupils of the pa
rochial school, who sang hymns,
under the direction of the Sisters
of St. Joseph,
After the procession had return
ed to the church, where the statue
was replaced on its shrine, Mass
was celebrated by Father Mercer
who also delivered a sermon, his
subject being the promises of Our
Ladv of Fatima.
