As the Bulletin goes to press
the latest report on Pope Pius’s
condition states that His Holliness
has suffered a reeurrance of Hic
cups, however a later report in
dicated that there had been a
“slight Improvement” in his con
dition.
The Papal physican, Prof. Ric-
cardo Galezzi-Lisi, expressed con
cern over the Pope’s failure to re-
j gain strength.
I “The general condition of the
Holy Father is serious because he,
has grown steadily weaker”, the
physican stated.
The Pope’s ailment was
diagnosed after X-Rays Thursday
as a small hernia Of the esophagus
and gastritis, also accompanied
by hemorrhaging, resulting in a
slow loss of blood. This, it was
said is responsible for His weak
ened condition.
Archbishop Dedicates
New Cathedral School

JUBILEE DEC. 15
SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Rev.
Philip Tierney, O.S.B. observed
the silver Jubilee of his ordina
tion to the Priesthood on Wednes
day December 15, with the offer
ing of a Solemn High Mass at the
Sacred Heart Church.
Following the mass Father
Philip was host at a dinner for
the local and visiting clergy, in
cluding the Right Rev. Vincent
Taylor, O.S.B., D. D., Abbot of
Belmont Abbey in North Caro
lina.
The sermon of the jubilee mass
was delivered by the Rev. Walter
Coggin, O.S.B., Ph.D. professor
of philosophy at Belmont Abbey
Seminary, the Rev. Raymond
Geyer, O.S.B. ' and the Rev.
Thomas Stumpf, O.S.B., members
of the faculty of Benedictine Mili
tary School were deacon and sub
deacon respectively with the Rev.
Kevin Fahey, O.S.B., Master of
Ceremonies.
Father Philip was born in Bos
ton, Mass., and attended St.
Francis’ Elementary School in
Roxbury, Mass., before going to
Belmont Abbey College and semi
nary where he completed his
high school college and theologic
al courses and was ordained to
the priesthood on Dec. 15, 1929 at
Belmont by the Most Rev. Micha
el J. Keyes, S. M. After his ordi
nation he was assigned to St. Pe
ter’s parish in Charlotte, N. C.,
where in the capacity of assistant
pastor he remained for 20 years.
In 1950 he was assigned to Savan
nah and was stationed at the
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist
and later was assigned as chap
lain to St. Joseph’s Hospital. For
the past two years Father has
been assistant pastor of the
Sacred Heart Church.
Archbishop
O’Hara Returns
To London
SAVANNAH, Ga. — His Ex
cellency Archbishop Gerald P.
O'Hara has returned to London,
and his duties as Apostolic Del
egate to Great Britain. Sailing
from New York on December
the 14th the Archbishop ended
a six week visit in his Diocese.
It is with sadness of heart
that the people of the Diocese
of Savannah - Atlanta, once
again bid farewell lo their be
loved Ordinary.
SAVANNAH, Ga. — At cere
monies held Dec. 12, the new Ca
thedral Day School was dedicat
ed by His Excellency the Most
Rev. Gerald P. O’Hara, D. D.,
J.U.D. Archbishop-Bishop of Sa
vannah-Atlanta.
In his address the Archbishop
stressed that a “neutral” school
cannot help adversely affecting a
student.
By the term “Neutral School,”
his Excellency explained he
meant one in which religion is
completely ignored, and where
nothing for nor against religious
truth is taught. Some of the
teachers and some of the text
books, he added hold religion
and religious practice up to ri
dicule.
“Little wonder, therefor if from
the beginning the Church Fas
maintained her own schools in
which the faith of her children
will be preserved intact and has
insisted on her children attending
them. Little wonder too if Cath
olic parents aware of their res
ponsibility before God in keep-

Rev. C. L. Maloney
Raised To Rank Of
Papal Chamberlain
ATLANTA, Ga. The Rev. Cor
nelius L. Maloney, superinten
dent of Schools In the Diocese of
Savannah-Atlanta, has been ap
pointed Private Chamberlain to
Pope Pius XII, with the title of
very reverend monsignor.
The announcement was made
through Archbishop Gerald P.
O’Hara. ‘ '
The Rev. Maloney, a native of
Wins ted, Conn., in addition to his
