Text Of Bishop McDonough's installation Address
The high honor conferred upon
me by our Sovereign Pontiff,
Pope Pius XII, in designating me
Auxiliary Bishop to Archbishop
O’Hara is reverently and affec
tionately accepted. Standing here
in the pulpit for the first time
and looking out upon the priests,
the religious and faithful of this
Diocese, I am quickened to the
magnitude of the responsibility
placed upon my shoulders. The
Diocese of Savannah is already
rich in tradition and scored over
and over again with examples of
heroic Catholic soliditary. These
graphic and vibrant accounts are

well known throughout this coun
try and are deservedly preserved
in the archives of this Diocese.
This glorious city is the mecca
for Catholics and this beautiful
Cathedral—the joy of Bishops and
priests, the pride of the laity.
When this Diocese was canon
ically established in 1850 only a
few priests assisted the Bishop in
carrying the faith to every sec
tion of Georgia. These heroic
missionaries bore willingly the
heat and fatigue of the day in
order to bring to even the most
remote parts of this state the
living Christ in His teachings,
and in the offering of the august
Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. These
pioneer priests of the last cen
tury have gone long ago, gone to
their eternal reward, but the im
print of their missionary zeal and
love of God still live among us.
These forebearers of the faith
drive us on with apostolic zeal
and inspire us with a consuming
love of souls. May we ever keep
burning brightly the eternal light
of faith which they placed in this
portion of His Vineyard at such
a tremendous sacrifice.
The treasured glories of the
past, however fine, often fail to
capture the attention of the pres
ent. But here the sacrifices of
the Catholic settlers of this city
and Diocese have resolutely en
couraged, almost beyond measure,
the present generation to work
prodigiously for the advancement
and the propogation of the faith.
Our faith and our dedication to
its preservation demand untold
sacrifices and when‘these sacri
fices are made in the fulsome ap
preciation of His Sacrifice the
spiritual venture is assured and
the divine romance written in
delibly in the blood of Calvary.
Through an effective, intelli
gent priesthood and a courageous,
strong Catholic lay organization,
the doctrines of our faith have
been conveniently translated in
to the language of the people. In
brief, the Catholic laity of Geor
gia has written their articulate
deeds, an enviable page, in the
already glorious history of Ca
tholicism in the southland. Truly
can it be said that the Catholic
laity of this state have accepted
the commission “to teach all na
tions” by first “seeking the king
dom of God.”
The Church today is the one
dynamic force capable of destroy
ing the mortal weapons of man.
The priesthood is still, and will
always be, the only effective
medium of teaching men that
peace must come from God and
that God must live in the hearts
and the souls of men. The mis
sion of the Church was defined
almost two thousand years ago.
We have a common cause and a
common dedication — bishops,
priests and laity -— to work to
gether for the glory of God and
the extension of His Church
wherever we are called. This
common cause, this faith in ac
tion, must be one—because in
the oneness of our faith we pro
claim to the whole world our
oneness of love—the love of the
Cross, the love of God. In the di
vine economy of the Church, Bi
shops have always been portrayed
as the chief pastor of the flock.
The Bishop is primarily called
to judge, to interpret, to ordain,
to preach, to offer sacrifices, to
baptize and to confirm. This
work belongs to the very fabric
of God’s kingdom on earth, but
for a Bishop to work effectively
he must have co-laborers, co
workers, in bringing to men the
gifts of God. I come to you with
a heart filled with joy and
ready to dedicate myself to the
welfare of souls. I come with
fear because of the responsibility
of the work which faces me. I
come, too, not with any mis
givings but duly conscious of my
own inadequacies. I come to
bring you the love of God, ex
pressed in the words, “Children
love one another.” My apostolic
mission is to you. Consequently,
I call upon your help, your un
derstanding, your daily prayers,
which I need and I know under
God you will not fail me.

ST. AUGUSTINE — Archbish
op Joseph P. Hurley and 114
priests of the Diocese gathered
here February 13 at a testimonial
dinner honoring Bishop Thomas
J. McDonough, on the eve of his
departure to assume his duties as
Auxiliary Bishop of Savannah.
Archbishop Hurley, expressing
farewell and Godspeed to Bishop
McDonough, declared that his
name would be deeply etched in
the history of Catholic Florida
during its historic periods of
transition and growth.
“For all those years,” the Arch
bishop said, “when you worked
so hard, when you thought so
luminously in terms of the sal
vation of souls, for all those days
when you dealt with the deft
touch with the problems of the
Diocese, with the warmth of your
personality and ever-present up
lift of your, priestly soul, we are
deeply grateful.
“As Officials, in charge of the
judicial work of the Diocese, as
Vicar General in charge of ad
ministration in spiritual and ma
terial things, as Auxiliary Bish
op, you have been a tower of
strength to the priests and reli
gious and the people of the Dio
cese, as you have been to me.
“We are happy at the promo
tion that has come to you from
the blessed hands of our beloved
Pope. We are happy that you will
remain as our neighbor. We are
still happier that you will be
back with us from time to time.
May God grant that it will be
frequently.”
Bishop McDonough’s last act
before leaving the Diocese was
to offer the Sacrifice of the Mass
here Tuesday morning in Our
Lady’s Chapel at the Mission of
Nombre De Dios.
Abbot Marion Bowman, O.S.B.
St. Leo, voiced the greetings of
priests of the religious orders at
Today’s ceremony for me is
in reality a prayer of thanksgiv
ing to God for the many favors
and blessings he has bestowed
upon me in the past, and a plea
for His Divine Guidance in the
future.
To our Holy Father, now glo
riously reigning in the Chair of
Peter, I pledge my loyalty and
unanswering allegiance. And in
a special manner I express these
sentiments of loyalty to the rep
resentative of Our Holy Father
in the United States, His Excel
lency, the Most Reverend Apos
tolic Delegate.
To Archbishop Keough I again
extend my abiding personal
thanks and the gratitude of this
Diocese for honoring us by his
attendance at the Mass and for
installing me as Auxiliary Bish
op. May I always be worthy of
the Archbishop’s recognition and
kindness.
To all the Archbishops, the
Bishops and Abbots I echo the
sentiment in the hearts of all.
Our affectionate appreciation and
grateful remembrance.
To all the priests, local and
visiting, I reiterate again to you
that I shall hold your visit here
in cherished memory.
To the Brothers, Sisters, and to
all my friends and new flock, I
assure you of a place in my
prayers for so honoring me.
To all who had a part in the
ceremony or in any phase of this
installation, congratulations on a
superb performance.

the testimonial dinner at the
Ponce. Diocesan priests’ felicita
tions were given by Monsignor
William Barry P. A.
All the Deans and many of the
Diocesan Monsignors were seated
near the Bishops during the tes
timonial dinner, together with the
many pastors and assistants who
came from all over Florida to at
tend the event.
Bishop McDonough, responding
to the addresses, said that the
joys of priestly activities of 16
years could not easily be erased.
“They keep crowding into my
mind,” he said, “. . . happy days
at the altar of God; the unique
privilege of being so intimately
associated with America's first
parish; the challenge in walking
on soil first claimed in the name
of God and vividly called there
after the Mission of Nombre De
Dios.”
He also recalled the inspiration
he had received from his associa
tion with the priests and the peo
ple, the other parishes entrusted
to his care, his episcopal conse
cration, and the confidence ' and
trust given to him by the Arch
bishop.
Monsignor James B. Cloonan,
Jacksonville, was chairman of ar
rangements for the testimonial
dinner.
SERVICES FOR
MRS. RACKLEY
AUGUSTA, Ga.—Funeral serv
ices for Mrs. Margaret Cooney
Rackley were held February 19th
at St. Mary’s-on-the-Hill Church
Rev. John Bradshaw officiating.
Survivors are her husband, Mr.
G. Palmer Rackley; four sisters,
Mrs. Claus W. Busch of Aiken,
Miss Eleanor Cooney and Mrs.
Edward J. Doris both of Augusta,
and Mrs. Katherine C. Kelly of
Rochester, N. Y.; and a number
of nieces and nephews.
To my parents, therefore, I thank
them for me to God through the
Mass and for giving me the in
spiration to follow Him in my
vocation to the spiritual life.
Finally, the culmination of the
joy of this wondrous oc-
c a s i o n is summed up in
the devotion and affection I
proclaim publicly for Archbishop
O’Hara. The privilege in being as
sociated with him is an inspira
tion. His goodness, his affectionate
letter and words of welcome will
ever encourage me. May God
bless him and may I be able to
relieve him of any worries at
home, so that he may be enabled
to carry on eminently well in his
important post for the Holy See.
May God bless and keep you
and may Mary, His Immaculate
Mother, guide all of to the throne
of Her Divine Son.
