linen corporal or in the pure gold
of the ciborium cup.
Jesus comes thus only soon to
be lifted up again by the priest
and laid upon the tongues of the
communicants. It is at this mo
ment of Communion that Christ
mas is really celebrated in the
heart of the monk, for while it is
his privilege to receive Our Lord
every day, his Christmas Com
munion brings the special grace
of a more intimate share in the
Mystery of the Incarnation.
EVERYTHING BUT
THE TURKEY
The Office of Lauds is sung
after the Mass, and then all the
monks retire to bed till 5:30 a.
m,, when all rise for another
Office in choir (Prime), followed
by the daily Chapter, which is
short this day, consisting of a
fatherly greeting from the Reve
rend Father Superior to all the
community, and could well be
called a “family-get-together.”
Then follow the Masses of all
the priests of the Monastery, each
of whom is privileged to offer
three Masses on this day. In this
way, the Holy Sacrifice is offered
42 times at the various altars in
the Chapel. The usual High Mass
is sung at 10:30 a. m., and this is
followed by dinner.
Here it might be mentioned
that the Brother Cook has been
working hard to prepare the
tasty Christmas dinner with ev
erything but the traditional tur
key! Thus, even on the natural
level, the monk will feast on this
great day with moderation, en
joying some specialties, not or
dinarily found on the daily mon
astic fare. In other words, he
celebrates this Feast as the Jews
were commanded to do by the
Lord on their great Feasts of the
Old Law: “You shall make merry
at your feast . . . you shall do
naught but make merry!” (Deu
teronomy 16: 11, 15).
At 3:00 p. m. second Vespers
of the Feast are sung, followed
by Benediction of the Most Bles
sed Sacrament, during which the
“Adeste fideles” is sung. Supper
at 5:00 p. m. is followed by one
of those heart-warming family
treats. The community gathers
around the harmonium in the
Chapter and sings carols to
gether, especially the old favo
rites, “Silent Night,” “Come, all
ye faithful,” “Hark, the Herald
Angels sing,” and “God rest you,
merry gentlemen!”
It must be remembered that
the monks have lived through
this Christmas day without
speaking to one another, and yet
this does not prevent a spontan
eous family spirit from reigning
amongst them. One has only to
witness this gathering of men of
every temperament and varied
background, united in the bonds
of brotherly love, to realize that
the genuine joy and peace of
Christ fill their hearts, something
the world could never give them.
'HAIL, HOLY QUEEN'
And yet Christmas Day has not
ended for the Cistercian monk.
Like every other Cistercian day,
it ends at the feet of Our Blessed
Mother. As the evening darkness
descends upon "the Shenandoah
Valley, a chance visitor, coming
up the winding path and steps to
the Monastery Chapel, would dis
cern the white cross above the
hell-tower. Upon entering., the
Chapel, he would see the white-
robed figures of the choir monks
and brown-robed figures of the
lay brothers filing into the Chap
el at 6:30 p. m. to sing Compline.
A small night light and the sanc
tuary lamp cast a soft glow
through the darkness, but as
Compline ends, the statue of Our
Lady suddenly appears from its
