MEET THE CLASSIC CITY GOLFERS ASSOCIATION
r
This article is to acquaint
you with the Classic City Golf
Association of Athens, Georgia. The
association was found 1984. Orga
nized because of our mutual love for
the game of golf and our wish to
formulate a program of golf for the
young people in this area. It is our
belief that exposure to the game of
golf is a positive, rewarding experi
ence for youths.
As golfer we know that the
game of golf and its rules of eti
quette have values that exceed the
game itself and can have life-long
implications. The game builds char
acter. promotes honesty, fair play,
humility and a host of other quali
ties that young people of today need
desperately.
The Classic City Golf Asso
ciation encourages, enhances and
actively supports golf through active
participation and encouragement of
youth at the local, state and national
level.
In addition to exposing
young people to the game of golf, it
is the goal and intent of the organi
zation to use golf as a vehicle to
support academically strong athletes
that may not have an opportunity to
pursue a college education without
the help of a group such as ours. We
will help in any way that is available
to us, we each will live our life so
that it can serve as a beacon light to
the young men we come in contact
with daily. We will also support
other community programs that are
designed to promote wholesome
youthful entertainment and positive
growth.
The majors objectives of the
club are (a) Enjoyment of the game
through active participation, and (b)
encouragement of youth. We spon
sor a golf tournament yearly in an
effort to raise money to support
local and national charities.
Some of the charities that
we have contributed to are: People
to People , United Way, United
Negro College Fund, local churches
in their effort to raise money,
Northeast Georgia Business League,
Genesis Educational Services, Inc.,
Morris Brown College, and AIDS
Athens. We have also sponsored
kids who could not afford to attend
summer school, or camps.
We have worked with a
number of organizations in conduct
ing golf clinics. These include the
Athens/Clarke County Recreation
Department's Grand Slam Program
at Bishop Park and summer camp at
Clarke Middle School, future plan
of the golf club is to become more
involved in communities activities
and concerns, such as: (a) Aids
awareness and education - we think
that with the rapid spread of this
disease and the number of deaths
that now occur as a result, we must
make an effort to help provide more
resources for research and support
ing those people with the disease;
(b) supporting the Black Men of
Athens because their is a need for
more programs that will help keep
the Black male from self destruct-
ing; (c) exposing more kids to the
game of golf by identify some indi
viduals that have a potential for
playing this game and support them
in a year-round program.
