Your Money Your Future
Question Yourself Before Starting Business
Honest answers help determine if
you’re ready.
If you’ve always dreamed of being
your own boss, why not make 1998 the
year you finally do it? If you’re still not
sure you have what it takes to own your
own business, here are some questions to
ask yourself:
■ Am I willing to commit myself entirely
to this endeavor, to work and slave and
take appropriate risks until, at last, 1
succeed?
■ Am I a “take charge” kind of person?
Do I prefer to be in control? Am I a
self-starter?
■ Can I set my own goals? Set realistic
deadlines?
■ Do I have the experience necessary to
be a successful entrepreneur? Is it hands-
on experience in the kind of business I
want to own? Is it both varied and
practical?
■ Do I feel energized when I’m faced
with problems or stumbling blocks? Do I
believe that I can overcome any obstacle,
given enough hard work and time?
■ Do I have the emotional good health to
bounce back after a failure or temporary
setback?
■ Have I carefully assessed how much
start-up money I'll need (including
money to live on until the business makes
a profit), and have I conferred with banks
and other lending institutions to
determine how much I can safely borrow?
■ Have I failed in.my previous life, either
personally or professionally? Did I get
right back up and try again?
■ Am I comfortable being a leader? Do
people usually assume that I’m in charge?
Can I lead without micromanaging or
allowing my ego to get in the way?
■ Are my ties to family and friends strong
enough to withstand the demands I’ll
make of them while devoting my physical
and emotional energy to starting this
business?
■ Do I look at the big picture in most
situations? Am I willing to dig until I
learn not just what’s going on, but why?
■ Do I have a good internal mirror? Can I
usually see myself as others see me? Am
I able (most of the time) to realistically
assess my skills and abilities?
■ Am I able to ask for help or advice
when I need it? Do I still make my own
decisions, no matter how much advice I
receive?
■ Do I feel comfortable delegating work
to others? Am I able to stand back and
allow them to complete the work on their
own, even if their methods are different
from mine?
■ Am I willing to accept both credit and
blame when they’re due?
■ Am I conscientious and thorough in
completing every project I undertake,
even, if it’s difficult and/or tedious?
■ Do I manage my finances in a mature
and self-disciplined manner? Am I
comfortable sticking to a budget? Do I
plan ahead in order to reach financial
goals?
■ Am I comfortable taking calculated
risks? Am I usually glad I took them,
whether or not they work out well?
■ Do I have the “staying power” to keep
at a project in spite of discouragements
and disappointments?
■ Am I prepared to devote whatever
amount of time, energy and other
resources my business requires to
succeed?
If you answered “yes” to at least 15 of
these questions, you have an excellent
chance of being a successful
entrepreneur. Now all you have to do is
do it.
