bands make
2007 debut

UWG bands put on an
impressive show to kick oft'
the 2007 concert season—a
five piece Jazz Combo, a
lightning-fast xylophone
feature, tut energetic trumpet
trio, and a jaw-dropping alto
saxophone feature preformed
by a professional Army
musician—SFC Bart Walters.
The Symphonic Band
and the Wind Symphony
both made their group debuts
Thursday night. Feb. 22. in
the Townsend Center, with
their concert entitled “Music
of Culture." The Symphonic
Band, directed by Dr. Kevin
Lee Mobbs. preformed
first, followed by the Wind
Symphony, directed by Dr.
Douglas R. Overmier.
The Symphonic Band
preformed five pieces,
including “At a Dixieland Jazz
Funeral”, arranged by Jared
Spear.. This piece fuses two
familiar tunes—“ Just a Closer
Walk with Thee” ;md “When
the Saints go Marching In”—
and it portrays fun sounds of a
New Orleans Jazz Band w ith

of West Georgia has
announced w hat could be
the largest event of the
Centennial Celebration as
it revealed last Thursday
the spring semester will
culminate in a concert
by the top-selling band
The Goo Goo Dolls. The
concert will be held at
the new Centennial Field,
located next
to the Z-6

Bright lights, roaring
fans, flashing pom-poms,
blaring horns, and one
hell of a game on the field.
In future years, students
and the surrounding
community at West
Georgia will experience
this classic football dream
at their very own football
stadium. Right now, the
stadium is a hopeful idea,
but as donations keep
flowing into the UWG
Apartments on Thursday
April 26 at 7 p.nt. with
gates opening at 6 p.m.
“Preparations began
more than nine months
ago following a request
from the Centennial
Celebration Steering
Committee to bring
a great event for our
students,” explained
Matthew Clay, director of
educational technology
services and coordinator
of the concert. “UWG
was added to the Goo
Goo Dolls tour and they
k will bring the opening

event are $35 A

Stadium Building Fund,
this thrilling dream leaps
one step closer to reality.
A recent donation was
made earlier this month on
Feb. 9 in honor of Stanley
Parkman, the founding
editor and publisher of
the Times Georgian. The
$25,000 donation will
name the media room in
Parkman's honor. The
media room w ill be located
in the press box w hich will
have space for newspaper,
radio, and television
personnel. Also, the press
box will contain private
available only at the
UWG Bookstore (cash.
VISA and Master Card
only, no checks will be
accepted). Tickets for
the general public will
be released on Saturday
March 10, providing any

Parkman served from
1974-79 on the UWG
Foundation Board of
Trustees. He was named
an Honorary Alumnus of
UWG,and he was awarded
the Founder's Award—the
university’s highest honor.
Parkman has supported
the university in past years
through the establishment
of the UWG Writing
Center.

Foundation. CB&T and
Synovus presented a
$250,000 check to acting

In the state of
Georgia, public colleges
and universities are not
permitted to use state
money or tuition to
fund athletic programs
and facilities. Thus,
the university launched
a private fund raising
guitarist/vocalist Johnny
Reznik and bassist/
vocalist Robby Takac.
Mike Malinin joined the
band in 1995 on drums/
percussion. Their hit
single. Let Love In, has
recently been on the
Top Ten charts. The
band became well
known when their

Building Fund—in the late
fall of 2005. The future
stadium will cost $lO
million to construct, and
in only one year fund now'
totals over $3 million.
The proposed stadium
will seat approximately
6,000 on the west side and
3,000 on the east side. In
addition to the previously
mentioned press box,
there will be a held house
with dressing rooms for
the home and visiting

album. Dizzy Up the
Girl, that produced
the additional single
hits "Slide," "Black
Balloon,” “Broadway”
and “Dizzy.” “Iris”
stayed on the Billboard
charts at number one
for 18 weeks and was

A small “Meet and
Greet” with the artists
is scheduled prior to the
concert and drawings
to attend will be held
on local radio station
